Stoiou was the subject of arrest warrants with the Toronto Police Service and is facing further charges with the Windsor Police, Durham Regional Police and the Edmonton Police. He was known to be in the Western Region area and members of the OPP Rural Agricultural Crime Team located and arrested the suspect before anyone else was victimized Arrest made A Blyth-area man pled guilty in Wingham’s court Jan. 21 to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in his system. Dietmar Schroecker, 57, was arrested Nov. 1, said Attorney for the Crown D. MacIntyre, after being pulled over by police outside Belgrave on a routine traffic matter. MacIntyre told Judge R.G.E. Hunter that the officers noticed signs of impairment and arrested Schroecker. Breathalizer readings were 210 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Schroecker has no similar record. Hunter fined him $1,500 and took his licence away for one year. Schroecker has 30 days to pay the fine. DRIVING DRUNK Brendan Crapper of Gorrie pled guilty to a drunk driving charge. MacIntyre said the 23-year-old had been involved in a minor motor vehicle crash in Howick, Aug. 9. When police arrived they suspected the accused was impaired. Breathalizer readings were 161 and 151 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Hunter fined Crapper $1,000, which he has 30 days to pay. He is prohibited from driving for a year. ASSAULT A Brussels-area man who pled guilty to assault in the October court avoided a jail term. MacIntyre had asked for a short period of incarceration, served intermittently, but after hearing the facts and reading a pre-sentence report, Hunter instead fined Bobby Joe Reiger $750. The incident occurred July 4 in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh. During an argument Reiger, 37, slapped the victim who then pushed him. The victim was charged as well and sentenced to probation. MacIntyre noted that the accused had a “fair criminal history” that dates back to 1989 and included a stint in the penitentiary. However it had been a few years since any convictions. Reiger’s counsel said that his client’s time in the penitentiary had brought a major change. Rather than continue to break the law, as it was suggested when he was released from jail, he has “shown to the contrary that he is able to keep himself on the straight and narrow,” He also noted that his client’s assault was minor, and thus not escalating in severity. Counsel said Reiger was taking a very positive direction in both work and his family. He asked that rather than an intermittent sentence, Hunter give his client straight jail time so that he could spend weekends with his children. Hunter surprised both counsels, however, issuing the fine, which he gave Reiger 90 days to pay. He placed the accused on 12 months probation. Reiger is prohibited from owning a weapon for five years and had to supply a sample of his DNA. DRUGS Luke Robert of Bluevale was fined $100 for possessing cannabis resin. Robert, who pled guilty was charged Oct. 27 after police stopped the vehicle he was in and discovered there was a warrant for him from Timmins. During the search, said MacIntyre, the officers found a small vial containing four grams of the drug. The 30-year-old was given one month to pay the fine. SUSPENDED SENTENCE Christopher Hoffele, 22, of Wingham pled guilty to possession of cannabis resin and failing to comply with a recognizance order. MacIntyre said an officer had stopped the vehicle Hoffele was driving in North Huron and recognized the accused as “someone the officer knew had some difficulties with his licence”. MacIntyre said the officer also noticed what he believed to be a hypodermic needle cover and knew the other person in the vehicle was an intravenous drug owner. The car was searched and other drug-related items were found. A small amount of cannabis resin was found in the accused’s pocket. Hoffele had been released on an undertaking that included he not have any drugs or paraphernalia on him. He has no record. Hunter suspended passing of sentence and placed Hoffele on 18 months probation. ASSAULT A child’s prank led a Gorrie man to a fit of temper and six-months probation. Scott Pinkney pled guilty to an assault charge dating to an Oct. 28 incident in Gorrie. Some teens had rung the bell on Pinkney’s home and run away. MacIntyre said there was no indication of how often this was happening, but the 44-year-old caught up with the one youth and grabbed him. According to the Crown Pinkney was “quite angry” and punched the victim a number of times in the chest and forehead. The child wasn’t injured, but scared, said MacIntyre, adding that the accused told the parents what happened. “Apparently he just lost his temper.” Hunter granted a conditional discharge with the probation term. Pinkney is prohibited from owning weapons for five years. THEFT If restitution in the amount of $40 is paid within the week, Hunter promised a Goderich woman an absolute discharge. Nicole Bonnett was charged July 29 with theft under $5,000. She pled guilty. MacIntyre said the 20-year-old had been working at a restaurant and served some friends after hours. Stolen were three bottles of beer and a pitcher of ‘combat juice’, mix of alcohol. Hunter granted a conditional discharge which would become absolute in 30 days if the restitution had been paid. Bonnett is on probation for six months. Court news Man gets $1,500 fine
