AgricultureBrussels Livestock reportCows sell on steady market at salesTHE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2010. PAGE 11. Continued from page 1 Pork board discussed efforts by the safety nets committee, on which she sits, to create a united effort of beef, pork and horticulture producers to propose a business risk management plan, extending the pilot plan in place for grains and oilseeds producers in Ontario. The group is asking that money not used in the plan for the crop producers be used as a retroactive payment for 2009 losses in the meat and horticulture groups. The groups want to have their position in place for Mitchell before she goes to the meeting of agriculture ministers at the federal, provincial and territorial levels to be held in February. They want her to be able to argue for federal participation, providing 60 per cent of the funding needed. Even if the federal government won’t buy in, the group will press the provincial government to go it along with a business risk management program that’s an extension of the one in place for grains and oilseeds producers. Looking back at last year, Katie Sinclair from Ontario Pork said sales through the board fell from $689.2 million to $573.9 million, a drop of $115 million through a combination of fewer numbers and depressed prices. While the sow cull program reduced the number of pigs being produced on Ontario farms, a reduction in the number of market pigs and weaners being sent to the U.S. because of mandatory country of origin labeling regulations has meant that 92 per cent of pigs are being marketed in Ontario. There is some good news on the horizon with the expectation that Cambridge Meats will soon be up and running, requiring about 5,000 pigs a week, Sinclair said. A new Quebec plant, certified to meet European Union standards, is also looking for pigs and may not be able to get enough in Quebec so may get them in Ontario.
