HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-01-28, Page 7Here we are deep into the month of
January. Only seven more weeks
until spring. We have been enjoying
great weather for the month of
January.
Unfortunately, the not-so-cold
weather, seems to mean there are
germs around. There have been
plenty of children off the buses and
not at school. Many of my friends
have been ill.
We hope everyone is feeling better
and those who have not been sick,
good luck staying away from it.
Our sympathies are expressed to
the family of Watson Reid who
passed away last week. His family
included Dave, Donna and Dan and
their families. Watty, as he was
known to many, was a former Walton
boy. He was a Pioneer seed dealer for
many years and was a friend to many.
He was one of the original Lost
Channel northern hunt camp boys
and enjoyed his fishing excursions
with them. He was an avid pool
player and had weekly pool playing
gatherings with his friends after his
retirement to Seaforth.
We send get-well wishes to Mary
Huether as she is a patient in
Seaforth hospital.
Returning from a great week away
in Mexico are Jim and Leona
Armstrong. They spent a week at the
Melia Azul resort in Ixtapa.
They met up with Leona’s sister
from Nova Scotia, in Toronto, and
took off from there. Leona’s other
sister, Doris and her husband Verne
McKinley of Tourin, Nova Scotia,
also vacationed with them.
They report having absolutely
wonderful weather. Hot, hot, hot.
The food was great, the nightly
entertainment was good and the
flowers were lovely.
They had miniature golf right at
their resort and enjoyed lazing
around the three different pools.
The Cranbrook dart league had
another great night of fun and firsts.
Kathy Workman surprised herself
with two bull’s eyes on the same
throw of three darts, scoring 120.
Other high shots for the night
included Evelyn Blake shooting a
136 and Fred Smith hitting 108.
Everyone is welcome on Wednesday
at 8 p.m. or call John and Pat Gillis
for info.
The cow calf breeders of Huron
Perth met for their annual meeting at
Walton Hall on Wednesday evening.
There were about 20 people. They
were served a soup and sandwich
supper before beginning their
meeting. Hall board members Judy
Lee, Judy Emmrich and Jo-Ann
McDonald helped out for the
evening.
Congratulations is in order for a
former Walton/Brussels area man.
Brad Knight was awarded a
Community Sports Volunteer award
by MPP John Wilkinson of Perth-
Wellington. Brad was nominated for
the award by people in Mitchell for
his commitment to the Mitchell
minor fastball system.
He has continued to coach minor
ball even though he has no children
playing in the system anymore. He
continues his role as chair of the
Mitchell fastball tournament, co-
ordinating and organizing it. An
estimated 100 teams participate. He
has been tournament chair for the
last five years and was instrumental
in the formation of the tournament
with the previous chairperson.
Brad is a well-respected member
of the Mitchell community and is
involved with other sports including
the Mitchell Curling Club.
Brad was awarded the honour at
Stratford’s City Hall Auditorium on
Wednesday, Jan. 13 along with 43
other recipients of the award.
Celebrating with Brad in his special
evening were his wife Christine,
daughter Janine, and his parents Jack
and Donna Knight.
It was Marie Coutts’ birthday this
week and as a special surprise,
Phyllis Mitchell arrived at the Manor
in Seaforth and entertained. She
played the violin, the old tunes
everyone loves.
Steve Knight and Jo-Ann
McDonald were invited to curl in
Mitchell last weekend. Brad Knight
did the inviting, but matched up two
Mitchell club folks with them to
play. The battle was on to see which
Knight boy would fare better and the
winner was … Steve.
The two teams both won a game
and lost a game in the two-game
battle, but Steve’s team had a few
more ends and points to finish in fifth
and Brad in sixth place.
Hopefully there will be a rematch
when Brussels Curling Club has its
bonspiel on March 13.
Members of Duff’s United Church
are reminded of the special breakfast
after church this Sunday to raise
funds for the people of Haiti. The
annual meeting is February 3 at 6:30
p.m. with dessert prior to the
meeting.
Grocery tapes are still being
collected and are all urged to bring
them into the church. Tapes from
Foodland, Scrimgeour’s and Zehrs
are collected. Computer ink
cartridges can also be redeemed for
cash, so we are collecting them as
well.
Celebrating a birthday with her
family was Helen Williamson. They
gathered at the Walton Hall to enjoy
the day together. There were over 40
present for a potluck meal and great
time visiting. Helen has reached the
milestone of 90 years and her five
children and their families spent a
wonderful day with her. Helen’s
children include Eileen and Dave
Morrison, Neil and Doris, Wayne
and Linda, Eric and Jackie and Lois
and Chris Hodgson. Congratulations
Helen.
Others celebrating birthdays this
past week were Henry Grobbink,
Kaitlin Ritchie, David Griffith,
Leona Armstrong, Brandon
McGavin, Scott Bromley and Brenda
McIntosh.

the way the federal government is
talking there may not be any more
stimulus funding,” mayor Dorothy
Kelly told Terry Matz, a ratepayer in
the audience.
But she said council had promised
Bluevale residents another meeting
before a drain was undertaken and
that would happen.
Councillor Paul Gowing worried
about the amount of money already
spent on the project. “We’re at the
point we soon have to find out how
we’re going to fund this,” he said.
“We’re accumulating costs.”
One of those costs was an
archeological study of the area near
the Bluevale Cemetery through
which the drain would be built.
Topsoil was stripped from the area to
see if there were any signs of
unknown graves in the drain’s path.
It appears that the route is clear but
Mike Thomas, director of public
works, said the consultants had
recommended an archeologist be on
site when the digging takes place in
case anything unexpected was
unearthed.

Helen Craig hosted the January
environment meeting of the Walton
Women’s Institute.
Members were asked to give an
environmental tip as part of the roll
call.
Several ideas were given: replace
any cut down trees, use the outdoor
clothesline to dry laundry, recycle
and reuse where possible, use non-
chemical cleaners e.g. baking soda,
vinegar, lemons, etc., remember to
take cloth bags into the stores when
shopping and slow down to conserve
fuel consumption.
Women’s Institute members have
been asked to contribute various
items to Canada Comforts for
distribution to the disaster in
Haiti.
With the loss to the Salvation
Army in Clinton just recently the
decision was made to give support
there as it is a local need. Items for
their food bank will be collected and
forwarded to assist them.
Each Branch in Huron Perth
District has been asked to send a $25
gift to the sales table at the
Provincial conference in June and it
was decided to send articles that are
made in the Walton area.
A donation is to be sent to the
Huron Perth Agriculture and Water
Festival in Seaforth to help with
costs that are incurred to help
students attend.
As convenor for the meeting Mrs.
Craig gave additional information
on Going Green. Try to get away
from using plastic bags, shut off
electric items when not in use, car
pool when possible, use the new
lightbulbs and free cycle. This is a
concept whereby you swap articles
with others, thereby keeping
unwanted items out of the landfill
sites.
Various sites are held for the
disposal for electronic items, paints
and chemicals. These should be
taken advantage of.
Any idea that helps protect the
earth and its people should be taken
seriously.
