A large congregation included members of Melville in Brussels, Belgrave United Church, friends and former members. The service was the closing of Knox Presbyterian, Belgrave and the amalgamation with Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels. Rev. Cathrine Campbell was welcomed back to share the sacrament of communion with the combined congregations to mark the milestone in the lives of both churches. Rev. Campbell’s sermon was entitled, Looking to the Future. Hebo Siertsema read Romans 12: 3-17. The Brussels choir sang, No Mountain High Enough and The Bond of Love accompanied by Mary Douma. Mary was the organist for the service and accompanied all the hymns. The session and congregation of Melville Church offered a warm welcome to all the members of Knox Belgrave who will be joining them to form their new amalgamated congregation. It is their hope that together they can continue the work of their churches in their communities. After the service, coffee and refreshments and a social time was held at the Belgrave Community Centre. Well done The Bantam boys curling team representing the Wingham Golf and Curling Club competed in the Zone playdowns in Hanover on Jan. 10. They won the A championship to advance to the Regional playdowns to be held in St. Marys on Jan. 16 and 17. (Photo submited) The Evening Group of the Knox United Church Women has made a change in their meeting times for the winter months, in order for some other women to be able to attend in the afternoon. Ten women met on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. in the church basement for worship, study and a social time. Sheila Nixon’s group was in charge of the meeting. She opened the meeting with a New Year’s prayer. Barbara Anderson opened the worship with a poem, Being the Light and Muriel Coultes read the scripture. Mrs. Anderson’s meditation was also on light. This was followed with prayer. The roll call was answered by answering the question, What would you hope for, for someone else? The minutes and treasurer’s reports were approved and Pat Hunking reported she had sent five cards. The group agreed to support Nancy Jardin on A Walk for Memories on Jan. 23. Mrs. Nixon led in a meditation on a New Year, New Decade, New Beginnings. She asked the group several questions which resulted in much discussion of various things that happened to change their feelings, how campfires, and fireplaces can create warmth, but had different effects on people. What things have remained constant in their lives, their church and community, also created good discussion. She closed with an Epiphany prayer. Out of discussions on the church and community, it was felt that communication was one thing people were not doing so well. Women of the church need to know they are all welcome at the meetings and to share their ideas with us. It was also felt more community events should be announced in the weekly bulletin, so everyone would be aware and able then to support them. The women will be making turkey pies on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 26-27 and help will be needed both days. Mrs. Ross Anderson will take orders for them. The general meeting of the UCW will be a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28 with everyone invited. The men of the congregation are invited to this meeting. The benediction and grace were sung. Donna Shaw served lunch and a social time was held around the table.
