Madill Secondary School’s Nordic ski team competed in the Thames Valley Invitational at Hardwood Hills near Barrie. There were 37 skiers competing in the Novice boys event. Madill’s Ben Underwood finished seventh. Trevor Raynard, Jason Meier and Lucas Klages, all of Belgrave, finished 17th, 21st and 26th respectively. Jamie Pollard finished 31st. Competing in the junior girls was Blyth’s Michelle Studhalter, who finished 25th. Other Madill results were: Madeline Yungblut, eighth; Kelsey Morgan, 29th and Kara Hendriks, 46th. There were 71 skiers in total in this division. Two Madill skiers competed against 83 others in the senior girls race. Emily Yungblut finished seventh and JulieAnne Staehli was 25th. There were 88 seniors boys in the competition, including Matt Nivins, who finished 39th and Matt Underwood who came in 42nd. Coach Julie Sawchuk is from Blyth. The game ended in a 5-0 victory for Blyth with the shutout going to Dustin Treble in net. A great offensive game was played by the whole team with goals scored by Jim Lane, Brett Glousher, with two, Brandon Marshall and Hunter Dale. Assists went to Patrick Franken, Owen Weber, Jordan Hubbard, Lane and Marshall. The team hosted BCH on Jan. 6 in a game that ended in a score of 4-2 for the visitors. BCH put in three quick goals in the first period with Blyth coming back with two goals in the second. Both Blyth goals were scored by Lane. Rolling along They were on the ice at Blyth Saturday for men’s broomball action. The Special K team from Keady faced off in this battle against Blyth’s Trojans and handed their hosts a 2-1 victory. Many of the curlers were still stuffed with turkey and getting over the holiday cheer. The daytime curlers got 2010 off to a great start on Monday, Jan. 4. The winning skips were Pete Eskritt, Wendell Stamper, Mac Inglis, Bill Tolton, Stewart Leedham and Ron McMichael who brought in a ringer to spare, 89-year-old Clayton Ruppell. The winning team of the first draw was Donna Shaw, Barry Elliott, Wayne Love and Stewart Leedham. Monday night men’s league had the teams of John Mann and Kyle Forster pick up wins. Tuesday night ladies winning skips were Carol Horton, Jenn Elston and Elli Schimanski. The Tuesday night competitive league had some great games with skip Bill Devos having the shot of the night with a raise take-out to score four to defeat Russ Taylor’s team. Other winning skips were Don Edgar, Earl Fitch and Kyle Forster. Wednesday, Jan. 7 the mixed league winners were Rob Middleton, John Dybes and Earl Fitch. Thursday daytime skips picking up victories were Pete Eskritt, Ron McMichael, Bill Tolton, Irving Elliott and Barry Simpson. The Thursday night leagues curled back into action after missing two weeks over the holiday. Family league action saw Doug Miller, Kelsie Eadie, Elli Schimanski and Kyle Forster pick up the wins. The Belgrave league winning teams were Mike Metske, Bruce Howson, Dean Vincent and Cam Cook. Friday night skip Forster picked up his fourth win of the week. Other winning skips were Bill McDonald and Lynn Hickey. In other curling action the Wingham Golf and Curling clubs Bantam boys and girls teams travelled to Hanover this past weekend. The club is very proud to report that both the girls team of Kabrina Bishop and boys team of Matthew Cottrill won the A championship and will represent Wingham in St. Mary’s Jan. 16 and 17. OUT OF THE HACK NEWS The Wingham Curling Club was sorry to hear that lifetime member J.R. Coultes has put away his curling broom and sweater. But it was great to see him sitting front row and centre watching the action of the daytime curlers this past week. Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn Blyth PeeWee LL wins The Blyth-Brussels Bantam girls team played two games this weekend. One was away on Saturday and the other was a home game on Sunday. On Saturday they met up with Mildmay, which they had not played yet this year. The teams were fairly evenly matched and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. On Sunday they played Howick which they have had several close games against this year. T he girls played well and ended up with a 3-0 win. Scoring for Blyth-Brussels were Tori Cardiff, Jordyn Sholdice and Laura Higgins. The girls have two games next weekend, with a home game in Brussels on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Blyth/Brussels Bantam girls play away and home games
