The Blyth Atom Local League
played in the Walkerton tournament.
The first game started slowly, with
the teams testing each other. Both
goalies held the game scoreless until
Lucknow scored with about three
minutes to play in the third period.
Blyth continued to challenge the
Lucknow team. Blyth pulled the
goalie for an extra attacker and took
the first penalty of the game with
1:10 left to go. Blyth went down one
skater to start the next shift and they
cleared the puck from their end,
pulled the goalie again to increase
their chances. Owen Andrews fired
home the first goal of the game to tie
it with 40 seconds to play.
The end of the period came with
no change in the score, so there was
a shootout. Blyth sent in three
shooters, Andrews, Drew Van Wyk
and Carson Richmond and scored
two.
Blyth’s goalie Franklin Marshall
stopped all three Lucknow shooters
for the win.
Going into the second game Blyth
played Walkerton Prestige.
The first period was much the
same as the first game 0-0, then with
2:21 left on the clock Walkerton
scored.
With 43.7 left on the clock
Andrews scored.
In the second period Walkerton
scored six seconds into the frame.
Richmond tied it. This was followed
by another Andrews’ goal assisted
by Cameron Gauthier.
Period three had a lot of back and
forth action. Finally Van Wyk scored
with an assist to Andrews.
Walkerton added another goal.
Evan Plunkett hustled down the
ice to score an empty netter to
complete the scoring with 10
seconds left.
Goalie Jeremy Wilts played
another great game in net.
After getting a one-hour break, the
Bulldogs were back on the ice
against the other Walkerton team.
Blyth played hard, but fell behind
early and couldn’t complete the
comeback.
Walkerton scored one in the first
and another in the second. The third
period saw Richmond and VanWyk
team up for a goal to get Blyth back
in the game, but they couldn’t find
the net again.
Walkerton added an empty netter
to complete the scoring.
The Blyth Midget Local League
team headed to Zurich on Dec. 18 to
take on the Zurich squad.
Zurich scored one in the first, two
in the second and three in the
third.
Blyth saw its only goal of this
game coming from John Lecomte,
assisted by Steven Ellis in the third.
Alec Lorentz played well between
the pipes for his team. Great efforts
were put forward by Jonathan
Atkinson, Jordan Bakelaar, Ellis,
Andrew Hess, Lecomte, Cole
McLean, Aaron Popp, Connor
Prescott, Ryan Sholdice, Ryan
Sjaarda, Brendan Stretton, and Dana
Teed.
On Dec. 22 the team headed to
Wingham. They played a great game
with a goal coming from Stretton,
assisted by Teed in the first.
Wingham scored two goals in the
first, then netted three more goals in
the second.
The Bulldogs answered back in
the third with two goals from
Lecomte, one assisted by Stretton.
This however left the Bulldogs
short 5-3.
The Blyth-Brussels Atom girls
played in the Mount Forest Classic
Girls tournament from Jan. 8 - 10.
The tournament opened on Friday
morning with a game against the
Stratford Aces.
Delayna Smith opened the scoring
in the first period, then scored again
early in the second period.
The team played very good
defence and Julia Beaven recorded a
shootout in the opening 2-0 victory.
The Normanby team was up next
against Blyth-Brussels.
The team scored early and went
on to an 8-0 victory. Smith notched
four more goals. Samantha Kerr also
scored twice with Sydney
Wightman and Morgan Howson
adding singles.
The two round-robin victories put
the girls directly into the semi-final
on Sunday morning. This game was
against the Chatsworth Rebels.
The opposition got on the board in
the first minute when a player broke
in alone on Beaven and fired a shot
into the top of the net.
This seemed to ignite the team.
Wightman replied with a goal to tie
it up less than two minutes later.
Smith added one to take the lead
before the first period ended.
The second period was all Blyth-
Brussels with Howson adding a
single and Smith scoring four more
times.
There was no scoring in the third
and the 7-1 win put the team in the
championship game.
Next up was a familiar foe in the
host Mount Forest Rams. This was a
thrilling game with lots of action at
both ends of the ice.
Smith continued her inspired play
and notched a natural hattrick with
all her goals being powerful shots
into the top of the net.
The defence of Jasmine Vader,
Sydney Michie, Brittany Walden,
Sarah Mitchell and Shelby Higgins
played very well in this game.
Beaven also played well in net with
only one getting by her for a total of
two goals against in the four
tournament games.
The girls played extremely well
under great pressure in the final two
minutes of the game, with the
Rams’ goaltender on the bench for
the extra attacker. The final score
was 3-1.
At the net
The action was before the Hitmen’s net as the Seaforth squad tried to hold the Outlaws from
Blyth. The team did a good job as the Outlaws weren’t able to steal a victory here instead
being shut out by a score of 1-0. (Vicky Bremner photo)
