What pretty scenes we’ve enjoyed
this past week – pristine white fields,
diamond like sparkles in the trees
and wind swept drifts to admire.
Mother Nature must smile as the
winter days unfold to show the
uniqueness of this season.
Protection is often needed for thebirds and animals as the temperaturedrops and the winds pick up. Birdfeeders with large trees for shelteroffer lots of nature’s best. In ouryard the wee chickadees dive bombthe feeder and just as fast return tothe shelter of the spruce.I’m never sure if it’s several birdsor one very fast eater that zooms bythe windows, much to our
enjoyment.
At Mike and Val’s the
woodpeckers have taken a liking to
nyjer seed and and on any given day
at least three different types can be
seen hanging upside down for a
snack. In London, Jeanette Boyton’s
home backs a nature trail so lots of
animals are often visible. Cardinalsare part of her regular customers atsnack time, so she was excited to seetwo land together. One brightmorning this month she was thrilledto have four pair at the feeders at thesame time. Now her balconyregularly sees several of the redbeauties dining together.Isn’t nature marvellous?Annual meetings are being
planned, reports submitted, audits
done and the business ready. That
means we’ve had another year and
now it’s time to see if it was good or
not.
Skating and hockey are in fullswing, lots of energy is being spentin the love of the sports as skills aredeveloped and sportsmanship islearned. Competition, friendship, loyalty, fairness are all part of these lessons.Good or bad experiences now arewhat stays with the child many yearslater. We’re midway through what
seems like the longest month of the
years, keep active, celebrate Robbie
Burns or anyone else you like but
keep in contact with the world.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
After a successful first solo show
last year, former Brussels resident
Gwen Tooth has opened another
exhibit of her work at the Beaux-
Arts Gallery in Brampton.
Her new collection, entitled
Fauvist Style Figures, began on Jan.
5 and will run until Jan. 30.
Tooth will be in attendance every
Saturday until the exhibit closes,
which leaves Jan. 16, 23 and 30. She
will be at the gallery from 11:30
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on those days. In
addition, she will also be at the
opening reception, which will be
held on Jan. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Beaux-Arts Gallery, at 70
Main Street North in Brampton, was
home to Tooth’s first solo exhibit,
Rhythms Of The Sea, which was
held over the summer.
While her summer show focused
on Tooth’s experience with the sea,
her most recent collection focuses
on paintings created in her own
style, but influenced by Fauvist
painters, like Matisse.

The first full week of January has
already passed with the many
functions at the Brussels Legion
Branch returning back to routine.
The Cadets resumed meeting on
Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. It may be
halfway through the Cadet year, but
if anyone is interested in checking
out what Cadets are all about, drop
in any Tuesday evening.
The Thursday night dart league
returned to action with 12 players.
The first-place team was Glenn Zehr
and Sandra Josling. In second were
Marlene Rutledge and Deb Cann.
The high shots were by Deb
shooting 102 and Gord Jacklin
shooting 121. The high start of the
night was Bush Whittard with a 68.
The Friday night supper had guest
chefs Sandra Josling and John Lowe
providing a dinner of sausage and
potatoes for the nearly 25 folks
attending. This week will be roast
beef.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 9 1/2 tables of players hoping to
be the big winners of the day. The
top place team with 78 points was
Joann MacDonald and Dorothy
Carter. There was a tie for second, so
the rest of the prize money was split
between the teams of Bernie and
Betty and Pauline and Bob.
Helen and Norm Dobson received
low prize. Lone hand prize winners
were Susan for the ladies and John
Subject for the gents.
The dancing crowd on Sunday
night was pleasantly surprised when
John Heaman was the band playing.
A mix-up in booking happened and
John was good enough to come and
fill in for us. The crowd was happy
for the unexpected change and over
85 people had a great night dancing.
Congratulations to Ron Schmidt
and Bob Richardson on advancing to
