camping grounds on Chris Lee’s
property for a week that anticipated
over 30,000 visitors.
Two local hockey players were
caught up in what was being called a
potential scam by Peel Regional
Police involving an international
hockey tournament in Europe,
hoping to showcase their skills for
scouts in France.
An application was made by the
Brussels Lions Club to try and save
the Brussels Library through the
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
The Ministry of Education
deemed an appeal filed by residents
of North Huron valid after the final
verdict resulted in the scheduled
closure of Blyth Public School.
North Huron lost a councillor and
Blyth lost an honoured citizen when
Murray Nesbitt was killed while
working at the Sifto Salt Mine in
Goderich.
Hundreds of people
lined Blyth’s main street to pay
their respects at his visitation and
funeral.
The area welcomed several new
teachers to its schools and two
new principals, Jim Binns at Grey
Central Public School and
Alice McDowell at Blyth Public
School.
Attendance was up six per cent at
2009’s Thresher Reunion from 2008
with a total of 835 campsites
occupied in a year where board
members felt attendance might
suffer.
Brussels and Grey Central Public
Schools were named in an upcoming
accommodation review by the Avon
Maitland District School Board.
After the death of Murray Nesbitt
and the prolonged absence of Greg
McClinchey, North Huron council
was forced to hold a by-election to
elect two new councillors to
represent the Blyth ward.
David Sparling was elected the
deputy fire chief for the newly-
amalgamated fire department of
North Huron.
Huron County braced itself for a
unique flu season, facing the
seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus all
at once.
The Bell Tolls, a fundraiser for the
restoration and automation of
Memorial Hall’s heritage bell,
featured local talent Lyndon John of
Brussels and Elvis impersonator
Mike Lorentz of Blyth.
Huron County first considered
adding its voice to the several
accommodation reviews going on in
the county over the last two years at
a committee of the whole meeting,
voting to present a resolution to the
Association of Municipalities of
Ontario.
The accommodation review
involving Brussels and Grey Central
Public Schools officially began.
Innocence Lost: A Play About
Stephen Truscott was nominated for
a Governor-General’s Literary
Award.
North Huron clerk-administrator
Kriss Snell announced that he would
step down in order to take the chief
administrative officer position in
North Perth.
North Huron filled its two vacant
Blyth ward council seats with
long-time Blyth historian Brock
Vodden and newcomer Dave
Riach.
Blyth Festival artistic director Eric
Coates announced the Festival’s
2010 season, which will lead with A
Killing Snow, written by Grand
Bend’s Paul Ciufo.
The Accommodation Review
Committee for the Huron East/North
Perth area met at Brussels Public
School for one of its scheduled
meetings, touring the school
beforehand.
The new school to be built in
North Huron, it was decided, would
be in Wingham, right beside F.E.
Madill Secondary School.
While Morris-Turnberry won its
Ontario Municipal Board appeal
concerning the road designation that
was appealed by Loblaw Properties
and the Municipality of North
Huron, the victory cost over
$150,000 to obtain after totalling
legal, planning and market research
costs.
In the Huron East/North Perth
accommodation review, a third
option was brought forward by
North Perth councillor Jeff
Bannerman that would close
Grey Central Public School, but
keep Brussels Public School
open.
The Accommodation Review
Committee was then granted an
extension. Huron East council
passed a resolution asking the
province of Ontario to hold any
additional funding towards the new
North Huron school that would
result in the closure of Brussels
Public School.
