Brussels Atom Reps were back on
track Sunday as they hosted
Listowel.
There was no score after the first
period. In the second,Wyatt Machan
flipped one in over the goalie’s
shoulder. He was assisted by
Delayna Smith.
In the third period, Machan scored
his second of the game, assisted by
Smith and Logan Kellington. Just
under two minutes later, Noah
Terpstra netted the third goal
assisted by Smith.
Goalie Derrick Waechter made
several saves and helped earn the
fifth shutout this season. The final
score was 3-0 Brussels.
In the Mississauga Classic
Hockey Tournament, the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning AA Midgets fell
short in the semi-finals against the
Barrie Sharks after completing
overtime and then losing in a
shootout 2-1.
That sent the Lightning to the
bronze medal game, which they lost
2-0 to Mississauga Chiefs #755 with
an empty netter sealing their fate in
the last five seconds.
During round-robin play, the new
linemates of Laura Irwin, Laken
Smith and centerman Marcie
Landman dominated the ice tallying
a total of 15 points together. The
girls won 4-0 against Willowdale, 1-
0 against Hamilton, tied Niagara
Falls 1-1 and won 4-2 against
Mississauga #715. Irwin led the
team with five goals and one assist.
Other point getters included Smith
with five; Landman and Ona
Mezenberg with four; Sara Gossell
and Dollee Meigs with two and
Kelly Garrow, Ashley Reid, Gina
Murray, Lindsey Ceasar and Diane
Bushell.
Emily Kelly and Sarah McGall
each earned a shutout during the
tournament.

The Brussels Atom Local League
had a slow start against Drayton in
recent hockey action.
The opposition started the scoring
and it stayed 1-0 until the second
period, when Brussels finally woke
up.
The squad stayed alive the rest of
the game.
Darren Evans went on a
breakaway and scored Brussels’first
goal.
Then Ronan Jared was in the right
place to score his goal, assisted by
Cody Harding.
Noah Terpstra put in a couple,
assisted by Kailey Wheeler and
Jarron Thompson.
Drayton finally got another goal
by goalie Konrad McArter.
Cody Harding scored a couple
more goals and Terpstra finished the
scoring with only seconds left in the
game.

It was a scary moment for the Blyth Bantam girls broomball squad as the ball narrowly skipped

Lightning Midgets
fall short in tourney
The Brussels PeeWee Reps
travelled to Clifford on Dec. 23 for a
7:30 p.m. game.
Clifford got the first goal, but it
was also their last. Brussels scored
many times to take a 12-1 victory.
Scoring for Brussels were Hayden
TenPas, Colton Hastings, Scott
Dolmage and Tim Waechter. Mitch
Kellington and Wyatt Ducharme
each netted hattricks.
Assisting were Hastings, TenPas,
Kellington, Waechter, Ducharme
and Kellington.
This team remains in first place in
their division, playing undefeated
with just one game left before
playdowns.
Brussels Atoms play Drayton
The Blyth-Brussels Atom girls
travelled to Milverton over the
holidays to play in the second annual
holiday tournament. The team
played in four games.
The first game was against the
Waterloo Ravens. The team got off
to a fast start and won the game by a
score of 7-1. Delayna Smith scored
six times with Alexandra Martin
getting the additional goal. Sydney
Wightman, Samantha Kerr, Sarah
Mitchell and Smith recorded assists.
The second game was against a
very strong team from St. Marys and
ended with an 11-1 loss.
The team rebounded with a good
game against a familiar opponent in
the Mount Forest Rams. The teams
played to a 2-2 tie after the first
period. The girls continued to
pressure and scored four more
unanswered goals to take the game
6-2.
Smith added to her goal total
bulging the the twine five times in
this game. Kerr added the other goal.
With a round-robin record of two
wins and one loss, the team
advanced to the semi-final to play
the first-place team from the other
pool. Ilderton proved to be too
powerful and the girls were
overwhelmed in an 11-0 loss that
eliminated them from the
tournament.
The girls played in Ayton and it
was a close game through the first
period.
Then the girls came alive. Smith
started the scoring. Sarah Strome got
two, assisted by Sydney Michie and
Jasmin Vader. Kerr put in two
assisted by Britney Walden and
Mitchell. Smith got a couple more
and Wightman added a point with
Morgan Howson assisting.
Brooklyn Johnston scored to
finish it.
Shelby Higgins filled in in net and
only let two goals get by her.
Atom girls play in tourney
The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls
played in the Milverton Royals
Holiday Challenge over the
Christmas holidays.
The first game was against
Seaforth which turned out to be the
eventual tournament champion.
Seaforth built up a 3-0 lead early
in the third period before Ashley
Higgins got the team on the board.
Seaforth scored again to restore the
three-goal lead. Higgins scored
again late in the game to close out
the scoring in this 4-2 loss.
The second game was against the
Stratford team that lost to Seaforth in
the championship game. This was a
defensive battle with the team
playing very well to limit the
opposition. Lindsay Shiell stopped
all shots for the shutout.
In the third period Higgins scored
with an assist to Leanne Plunkett.
That was the only goal of the game
in a 1-0 victory.
The final round robin game was
against the host team. Milverton
scored three times in the second
period to take the lead.
Late in the second period Higgins
got the team going again with assists
to Tiffany Deitner and Caitlyn
Ducharme. Early in the third
Mackenzie Nesbitt scored an
unassisted goal. That set up a furious
finish to the game with the girls
applying tremendous pressure. In the
dying seconds of the game the
chance came and a rebound was
slammed home, but it was a fraction
of second late and the game ended in
a 3-2 loss.
That put the team in the C final
against Mount Forest. Mount Forest
jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.
Higgins replied with a goal late in
the first period. Then she added
another with four minutes left in the
game.
The girls iced the game with an
empty net goal in the final seconds
of the game.
