Hope you all had a good
Christmas and a happy start to the
new year, a new decade.
Happy birthday to Marion Young
who will celebrate on Jan. 11 and to
Charlie Shaw who will celebrate on
Jan. 12.
Here are the results of last year’s
euchre on Dec. 21: high lady, Mae
Ritchie, 77; high man, Jewel
Plunkett, 75; ladies’ lone hand,
Dorothy Carter and Helen Lee, tied
with three each; men’s lone hand,
Bill Nethery with four; low lady,
Evelyn Christensen and Ruth Shiell
with 47 each; low man, Wilmer
Glousher with 45.
Door prizes, donated by Kay
Hesselwood, went to Vaughn
Hunking, Betty Archambault and
Ruth Shiell. Share the wealth went
to Darrell Wood, Edythe Glousher
and Doug Cartwright.
Everyone went home with a gift
thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary.
The next euchre was Jan. 4 at the
Legion Hall.
My family and I have had a very
busy Christmas season. Christmas
Day was quiet for me and my family
came for Christmas supper on Dec.
26 after a day of shopping. On
Sunday evening we went to my sister
Nancy and Ed Daer’s to visit before
they left for Florida.
This past Saturday the Craig
family gathered at the home of
Murray and Joye Kane to celebrate
Christmas. Helen Merheb and her
family were home for Christmas
from Lebanon. They arrived
Christmas Eve and are returning to
Lebanon in January. Those attending
were Sue, Emily and Amanda Craig
of Waterloo, Doug, Joyce, Heidi and
Jamie Craig of Atwood, Deb, Fred,
Jon and Quinton Hakkers, Dave
Craig and myself of Blyth, Laurie
Elder of Stratford, Al, Cindy, Bryan
and Ashley Kane of Mitchell.
We were missing Bodie and Ollie
Craig of Strathroy as Bodie had just
got home from hospital.
BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Jan. 3 were Joan and
Lavern Clark. Ushering were Laurie
Sparling, Nancy Hakkers and Terry
Richmond. Floyd Herman was
director of music and Fred Hakkers
ran the power point.
Rev. Gary Clark wished everyone
a Happy New Year and welcomed
them this Baptism Sunday.
The first hymn, Angels We Have
Heard on High was followed by the
congregation repeating the United
Church Creed.
The children were asked to come
to the front and prepare the baptism
font by helping to pour in the water.
Rev. Clark asked the children to help
make the water special by putting
their hands in the water and saying a
prayer for the babies to be baptized.
Myrtle Badley introduced the
parents and the babies, Cole Mathew
Mason, son of Karen and Rob
Mason and Bo Reginald Wharton,
son of Kelly and Andrew
Wharton.
The choir sang a special anthem
just for Cole and Bo,You are Loved.
The children went downstairs for
the time of worship and fellowship.
The scripture was John 1: 1-18.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was, Is The Baby In The Manger?
The World, The Flesh.
This was a good day for baptism
as it is close to the ending of the 12
days of Christmas. Stephen
Hawking was a brilliant mind. He
studied the universe and discovered
at what rate it was growing.
The children baptized have a
purpose in life. They are who God
wants them to be. The church is here
to help teach them and to assist the
parents.
People lose their way sometimes
in the darkest time of the year. A
candle will show them the way and
Christ is this candle.
To know that one life has breathed
a little easier because someone has
lived, this is to have succeeded.
The next hymn was Away in a
Manger followed by the receiving of
the offering and prayer.
The last hymn was Go Tell It On
The Mountain.

part of the selection committee, said
that she was happy to see two grants
approved in Blyth for such diverse
projects. However, she said, while
diverse, they both strive to preserve
heritage, which is important to the
foundation.
Laurel Armstrong, chair of the
Heritage Culture Partnership agreed.
“These projects are both totally
different,” Armstrong said. “One is
going to provide the funds for a
cultural advisor, which will result in
a website and a magazine, while the
other is going to renovate the hall
and make it more accessible.”
Murphy says her job is never easy
and almost all of the projects that
apply for Trillium grants are worthy.
“Almost every application we see
is worthy, but we have to decide who
we’re going to give our limited
funds to,” she said.
Mitchell said she was happy to see
more funds come into Huron
County for its cultural programs,
something she feels is very
important to the future of the
county’s economy.
“I am very pleased to announce
funding today for the Blyth Festival
and Heritage Culture Partnership
through the Ontario Trillium
Foundation,” she said.
“The cultural sector is becoming
more and more essential to the
Huron County economy and it is
important that we support these two
organizations in the work they do to
promote arts and culture within our
communities.”
