What to do if your
preschooler receives too many
toys for Christmas?
It's a familiar problem —
especially for families with one
child or the first grandchild.
When a preschooler has too
many new toys to play with he
may become frustrated, unable
to decide which one to play with
first. Or he may try to play with
them all, and not reap much
benefit or enjoyment from any
of them.
The solution is to put some
Safety pointers
for a
Merry Christmas
Everyone wants to have a
merry Christmas — and one way
to ensure this is to practice
safety in the home during the
festive season.
Hal Wright, Safety Specialist
with the Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food,
recommends these Christmas
'safety tips:
THE TREE: Cut about one
inch off the trunk and place the
tree securely in a water-filled
container. Place the tree away
from fireplaces, heaters and
entrances to avoid possible fire
hazard. Refill the container
regularly.
LIGHTS: Never use electric
lights on metal trees 'as they
immediately become live' if the
string short-circuits. Use indirect
lighting instead, and turn off all
tree lights before leaving the
house.
' DECORATIONS: Use
non-combustibles such as glass
or other flame retardant
materials.
GIFTS: Make sure that all
toys carry a C.S.A. (Canadian
Standard Association) label of
approval.

IJC Ws hold joint meeting'
Merry Christmas
The hour is late. It 14 actually
after midnight and I am still
sitting at my typewriter in the
dining room of my home
churning out copy for the next
edition of the newspapers to
which I contribute.
It is on days like this that I
often ask myself why I ever took
on the work of a news reporter
and more especially, a column
writer.
Then I look up and see the
Christmas tree twinkling brightly
in the corner. I see my youngest
son's sock already hanging where
Santa will be sure to find it. I
note the special • kind of - glow
that, is all around me despite the
fact that my family is upstairs
fast asleep.
That's when I know why I
chose writing as my career. It is
because I get the opportunity
once in a long while to push
home my ideas and to air my
favorite hopes and dreams.
Every year at Christmas, as
long as I have been writing this
column, I use this space for a
kind of sermonette. I know
there are few of you who like to
be preached at. I'm not really
crazy about it myself ... but still,
I would like to encourage each
one of you to forget about the
hustle and bustle of Christmas
shopping and decorating and
cooking just long enough to hear
- the little voice inside of me
which is crying "thank you."
For it is at Christmas, more
than any other time of the year,
that I am reminded what a great
gift was given when God sent His
Son into the world to do 'for us
what we could never do for
ourselves. And it is because I am
so grateful for this wonderful
sacrifice that I am truly thankful
for many other blessings I enjoy.
I have a tremendous husband,
I remember. He's not just any
ordinary guy for he has a heart
which is full of love for me and
that makes him mighty special
to me. He is not rich or sauve or
sophisticated or even handsome.
He's just there whenever I need
him, giving kindness and gentle
supprt every day of every year.
Who p Wouldn't be grateful for
that?
And I have three fabulous
kids. Some days I could wrap
their necks tightly with silk
cord; but most times I get a big
lump in my throat just looking
at them and knowing they are
my own flesh and blood, born
out of a qiiiet kind of love I
share with my husband. I note
that my children are all
physically and mentally sound
and I give thanks that such an
imperfect creature as I could
produce such truly perfect
specimens as they am. What a
miracle, I shout inside me.
Thank you God, I whisper in my
heart.
I look round my home,
usually cluttered with all kinds
of mislaid articles and dotted'
with uncompleted jobs, I see it
not as an untidy bunch of rooms
but as a warm, comfortable
haven away from the world
where I can take off my girdle
and speak my mind and be alone
with myself when I like. It is the
only place in the entire world
where I know I am welcome any
hour of the day or night and
there is a peace and contentment
here for me that just isn't found
somewhere else.
I watch my fingers as they
move over the keys of the
typewriter; I twitch my legs
which though tired right now,
will probably carry me to my
job tomorrow. I see. I hear. I
touch. I taste. I can even detect
the scent of a rose, What luck.
What terribly good fortune!
I glance out onto the street
and remember that the country
in which I live is free, I have the
freedom to come and go as I
please without fear of any kind.
I can take a crack at the Prime
Minister of Canada or I can
shout to high heavens about the
inequitable tax levies .for
education, What a privilege I
enjoy. I am content.
May I take this opportunity
dear readers, to suggest you
count your blessings, too. If you
try to make an actual list using
pencil and paper I'm positive
you will be short of space long
before you run shy of blessings.
I don't have a Merry
Christmas because of the gifts
under the tree or even a few
days off • from the office. I get
my kicks from realizing what a
well-blessed woman I am and I
know that even if Santa missed
my house entirely this year,
right now, I wouldn't lack for
anything which I absolutely
need to make me happy.
Merry Christmas to all of
you. May the joy that is mine be
yours too.
away temporarily, and to do it
immediately, before your child
has an opportunity to miss
them: They'll be much more
appreciated on some future
"rainy day".
In deciding which ones to
store, take into account his
present interests and level of
development as well as the
variety, size, and play value of
the new toys. Toys which are
too advanced for him should be
put away until he's ready for
them.
Extra action toys will be a
perfect surprise for that day
when he (and you) are
housebound and bored. A quiet
game type toy or puzzle is just
right for when he's in bed with an
cold. A
Christmas lasts for several
months when wise parents
distribute toys from generous
Santas to best help their
preschoolers discover his world
through play.
Several research projects have
shown a link between oral
cancer and heavy drinking.
Although oral cancer has
been attributed to other causes
as well, the studies indicate that
the alcoholic has a much greater
chance of developing the disease
than moderate or non-drinkers.
Although there are no exact
statistics, the contention is based
on growing convictions by oral
pathologists. The researchers
concede that they do not know
why heavy drinking is linked to
oral cancer, but speculate that
excessive amounts of alcohol
could cause irritation of mouth
tissues. Also, they say that
malnutrition and defective
functioning of body cells —
frequently associated with
alcoholism — may render the
mouth tissues more' susceptible

frustrate child developing oral cancer. But it's
difficult to say how many drinks
a day would be dangerous, say
the researchers.
The disease has also been
linked to heavy smoking, but
oral cancer does occur in persons
who neither drink or smoke,
.One study has established that
the disease has doubled in
women in the last 15 years and
is related to an increase in
cigarette smoking by women. —
