HAROLD CONNELL SUPPRTEST AGENT Seaforth — ontario A joyful Christmas to everyone Clinton News-Record, Thursday, OpoemOer 24,1970 7 unions bounce Zurich, lose to 'Exeter The main reason for the win was the blanket they threw over Co-op's one big threat, John McKinley. It was one of the .best defensive games of the year for the Juniors with strong play from Bob Cook, Ron Henry, JiM Toop and Derwin Carter on the rear guard. Ron Graham counted the first goal after a fine play by Bill Crawford. Crawford got the puck behind, the Zurich net, skated, out in front (a la Bill MacMillan) and let go a hard backhand. The rebound left Graham wide open. Mustard scored his first of five weekend goals on an assist from Ron Henry. lie added another on a nice shot from the right side for Clinton's third goal. Bill Stirling wound up the scoring with a backhand. This week the Juniors hit another three games in four days, all away from home and their performance could do much to make or break them as far as playoffs are concerned. One of the most important games will be coming up On January 2 in Belmont. The Juniors are now holders of a playoff spot and one of the teams challenging them for their spot is Belmont who have been hot lately. HOME FURNISHINGS collected an assist on the play. BAD PASS Jim Guenther got Exeter back into a tie when he socred while Exeter was short, handed after breaking up a pass from Jim Toop to Stirling. Toop almost got the goal back when, playing like a forward, the big defenceman stickhandled his way past the entire Hawk team and had the goalie down but couldn't steer the puck into the empty net as he was hauled down from behind. Exeter took the lead before the end of the period on another short-handed goal with Larry Laye, the best player on the Ice for either team, stickhandling passed the Clinton team, missing on one shbt and picking up his rebound and firing in a backhand from a bad angle. The first few minutes of the third quickly sewed up the win for the Hawks. Fleischauer, trying to bat down a centering pass from the corner with his stick, knocked it into his own net instead. Laye got credit for the goal. Then Joe O'Rourke scored on a two-on-one break with Clinton short handed to finish off the Hawk scoring. Steve Murley earned the assist. Clinton threatened to come back when Mustard scored his third goal picking up a lose puck while short handed and, wide open in front of the Hawk net. The Juniors stormed the Exeter net but John Hayter in goal was erual to the threat. Still they never gave up and pressed right up to the final buzzer. CLINTON 4 ZURICH 0 In Friday's game the Juniors looked fairly good in the first and third but atrocious in the second, but even without playing their best were able to take the easy 4-0 win, BY K,R. Clinton Juniors ran into three games in four nights, a hot Exeter club and a lot of had luck and picked up only one win three games last week. The juniors looked more impressive in their 5-3 loss to Exeter on Sunday night than they did in their 4-0 win over Hen.sall-Zurich Co-ops on Friday night, but they were playing the league-leaders and that made quite a difference. Exeter capitalized on nearly all mistakes made by the Clinton boys and the locals just didn't get many breaks themselves. It seemed every clearing pass from their own end and every shot at the Exeter goal hit a Hawk somewhere along the line. Typical of their •luck was the play by Bob Cook who was helping to kill-off a penalty. Cook did a good job of blocking a point shot and the puck bounced off him toward the blueline. It was the kind of play that might have meant a breakaway if Cook had had a lucky night but instead of bouncing past the defenceman, the puck hit him on the chest and bounced past Cook. Despite' this sort of break, the Juniors made a good fight of it and almost came back in the third-after trailing 5-2. They took the lead after only two minutes of play when Stu Mustard scored the first of his three goals. Bill Stirling checked an Exeter player in front of his own net and Mustard picked up the loose puck and backhanded it into the goal, But Randy Preszcator came back to tie the game with a hard shot right along the ice to beat Dennis Fleischauer. . Clinton came back to take the lead again before the end of the period when Mustard deflected a point shot from Ron Henry into the net. Sorry, but close The more money there is riding on a shot, the more accurate the shooter. Or so it seemed on the weekend when the first two attempts were made at winning the jackpot for shaprshooters at Clinton Juniors Hockey games. The idea is simple. Programs are numbered. Each night a draw is taken from the numbers on the programs sold. The winner of the draw gets a chance to fire the puck into the goal from centre ice and collect the jackpot. But collecting is not so simple since a board is placed across the net leaving only a portion of the net open. As it turned out, there wasn't even need of the board on Friday night when the holder of CONKLIN LUMBER doesn't count the lucky program, former junior player Ken Engelstad, now of Palmerston, missed the net entirely and the five dollars. The jackpot rose to $10 for Sunday's game and petite Jay Scott had her chance. She missed by only inches. The jackpot will total $15 for the next home game on January 10 at 2 p.m. Programs are on sale at all home games and include lineups and pictures of the home team players, lineups of the visiting teams, a short briefing on the visiting team and a profile of one of the Juniors. The price is 25 cents. with Bert Clifford The Pee Wees and Bantams received confirmation this week of their acceptance into the Silver Stick Competition at Watford, Ontario.
