He can't eat normal baby foods — milk is just one of the many things his sys- tem can't tolerate. When admitted he was down to half his normal weight. Doctors at the Hospital have put him on a special diet of Iamb meat and corn syrup. Now he's doing well, but it took a long time, and many tests to diagnose Jean-Guy's dietary problem, More than 773,000 laboratory tests are made at THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN, Toronto, each year and about 200 staff members are working in the Hospital's Research Institute trying to find the cause and cure of children's diseases. You can help the Hospital con- tinue this very important research. Support the annual Christmas campaign. Over which you have a surprising degree of .control. There are three simple steps to, safe enjoyment of your favourite treei 1, Don't purchase a tree that has dried Put. Trees that are 00 dry have brittle branches .04 shed needles easily. Test twigs and needles for .fiexibility, 2. Store tree outdoors, preferably under shade, until it is to be used,. If it must be stored indoors, re-cut butt and immerse in water, Maintain water sopoly. S. When tree is to be erected, re-cut Butt diagonally. Stand tree in water and maintain water supply for duration of tree's use. A tree handled in this manner will achieve a moisture content equal to, and in many cases greater than, its moisture content when cut, and will stay fresh, green and safe through the Christmas season. TINPIMPPRTANT OivitTATIONS The .effectiveness of butt jwinOngnn has ..two important limitations: 1. A • :tree whose moisture content has dropped, to a ,critical. point before immersion will not recover, but will continue to dry out, even when standing in water, Cheek tree again for flexibility 24 bows after erecting, If there is Any sign of lessened flexibility in needles or twigs, the tree should be reinoVed. liven a tree with imo per cent moisture content will not withstand a complete ring of flames at its base. A quantity of highly combustible material, such as tissue-wrapped gifts, presents a fire hazard in itself from which the tree, and many hQwhold furnishings, will not be immune, A FINAL SAFETY NOTE To complete your Christmas tree fire safety program, use only lighting equipment bearing the CanSdiail Stow/pis Association label of. approval, And make sure every, wire itigi socket is in proper wodOng order. Finally, use only decorations made of non-combustible or approved slow-burning1110.014 Use of a fire-retardant chemical spray on your tree is no Substitute for butt immersion, and is not recommended. (This fire safety information is based on experiments conducted by the Department of Forestry and Rural Development, at the Petawavva Forest Experiment Station, Chalk River, Ontario.) IF FIRE SHOULD STRIKE, first get everyone out of the house, then sound the alarm and call the fire department before attempting to fight the fire yourself.
