Retired now
He turned town hall
into an art gallery
Many of the men who passed
through the Royal Canadian Air
force base at Clinton left little
behind them to mark their
passing. To most people in town,
these men were nothing but
faces in a passing crowd.
R. E. Thomas may have
seemed that way when he served
at the base in the late forties and
early fifties, but he left his mark
in water colours. He has been
gone from the community for
many years now, but his work
during those .years has recently
turned the council chambers at
the town hall into something of
an art gallery.
All the time that he was
stationed at Clinton, Mr.
Thomas was Using his talents as a
painter to capture the beauty
and simplicity of the
countryside in Huron County.
For many years his work hung in
the Sargeant's Mess at the base
but, with the base scheduled to
close next year, the works were
offered to the town by former
base commander, Col. E. W.
Ryan. ,
Mr. Thomas is now living
retired, in Victoria, but he has
left his mark behind. Km in
Clinton.
Unfortunately, black and
white pictures .cannot capture
fully the beauty of his work.
