Defensive mistakes were to prove the biggest reason for the defeat, if any one reason could be singled out. Lucan's third goal came when John Anstett got deked out at the blueline and Jim Hearn and Bradley came in all alone. Lucan made it 4-2 early in the second on a hard shot by Hodgins into the upper right corner. But Bill Stirling on a powerplay with two-man advantage, scored an unassisted goal after a nice shift. With Clinton two men short, Lucan came back for their fifth goal by Denis Carty. In the third period Clinton looked for a while like they might pull it out of the fire. Wayne Arthur got the first goal on a low point shot, unassisted. Then Mark Jenkins on a nice pass from Derwin Carter in the corner made it 5-4. But Lucan put the game away with two more goals. Dennis Fleischauer was the goat on the first when he caught a shot and dropped it behind the net, right on the stick of Keven McCarven. And there were no defencemen around to help as he passed the puck out to Bradley who scored. Hodgins scored again on a nice move to salt the game away. The referees couldn't be blamed for the Clinton loss but they should be blamed for something. It was the worst example of refereeing that most observers around the arena had seen in a long time. Still, defensive mistakes and the complete lack of anything that even resembled a powerplay. Clinton lost another in Mitchell by a 9-7 count on Tuesday night but had an excuse titti&With five regulars not in the game. Among those absent were Gary Cummings, Bill Stirling, Stu Mustard and Dennis Fleischauer. This week the team takes on Lambeth and Tavistock in games on Friday and Sunday at the arena. This week they look like the also-ran's. A week ago, against two first division clubs the Juniors showed drive and determination, skating and checking and won two close games, This weekend, against weaker teams, they didn't even seem to be interested in the game. It's the kind of erractic play that is beginning to frustrate many fans and at least some of the players. Friday night against Tavistock, the team looked just about as bad as any time this year. They crowded around goalie Dennis Fleischauer and got into each others' way on nearly all of the goals in the first period when Tavistock's Zehr stole the puck from one Clinton defenceman, beat another defencernan and easily beat Fleischauer. And it didn't improve much as Tavistock took a 5-2 lead by the end of the second period, Nice plays by Crawfiird on a set up from Bill Stirling, and Mark Jenkins` on a play by Gordon Riley were the only bright spots for Clinton,. In the third period, Dave Slade took over in goal for Clinton and was the victim of three unassisted goals. He looked weak on only one however. Clinton looked better in the 7.4 loss to Lucan on Sunday night but not enough better to win. Jake Bradley gave Lucan the lead at 7:41 of the first period on a rebound from a point shot. But Gordon Riley tied the score seconds later on an assist by 'Mark Jenkins. Bert's Corner with Bert Clifford The cold weather this weekend brought out a large number of children &3, take advantage of the free ice time from 2-3 o'clock for the under six age group on Sunday. Our Recreation Board has been donating this weekly hour on Sundays for the past several years and each year more parents are starting their children skating at an early age. A reminder to school age children of the free skating time being donated this year by the Lions Club for grades 1-4 on Tuesday 4-5:15 and grades 5.8 Thursdays 4-5:15. * * Hockey fans had four evenings in a row to watch hockey at the Community Centre this week. Starting on Thursday the Seaforth Beavers downed the Colts in an Exhibition game. Friday and Sunday the Juniors played. Saturday the Bantams and Midgets had their weekly doubleheader with Seaforth being their opposition. To help in the cost of operating the Bantams and Midgets a small admission of 50 cents per adult and 25 cents for students will be charged this season. * * * Stricter refereeing and co-operation of the club's coaches in the Midget group helped to keep the game with Seaforth in hand on Saturday. Our boys stuck to hockey throughout the game and piled up 11 goals with six coming in the third period. Seaforth's Kevin Broome picked up a misconduct penalty for attempting to attack referee Bruce Collins. Fortunately his team-mates slowed him down. Between periods, their coach Don Papple ordered Broome to remain in the dressing room for the remainder of the game. This is the type of action which will help to make the game of hockey more enjoyable for the players and the Tans. Clinton's Dave Fawcett will be out of action for a week or two after he injured his knee early in the third period of Saturday night's Midget game. * :1: Ex. Clintonian Stew Scheonhals will miss out on attending this year's Grey Cup, when the Saskatchewan Roughriders lost out in the Western Final on thelast play of the third game, Stew's son-in-law Cord Barwell is an end for Saskatchewan. Don't forget to purchase a Grey Cup draw ticket from a Lions member. Proceeds, from this draw are used to help sponsor Midget baseball and hockey. Two other organizations are needing your support in upcoming fund raising projects. The Kinsmen Club are holding their annual stag night Friday, December 4, at the Community Centre. The five dollar cost for a ticket entitles the holder to attend the evening's activities and a chance to win some of the $1,000 to be given away. The ticket holder does not have to be in attendance to win any of the prize money. Monies raised will help to pay for the new ball lights which will be put in this spring. * * * Players on the Midget team are running a weekly draw to defray the costs of purchasing equipment and sticks for this season - give them your support. Our Minor Hockey clubs will be busy over the Christmas holidays. The annual trip to Clinton, New York, will be on December 27, 28 and 29 for the Kinsmen Ponies and the Fish and Game Bantams. The Lions Midgets are participating in the Olympic Tournament in Listowel. They will have a minimum of six games over the nine-day holiday. Bantams earn 44 tie with Seaforth BY BERT CLIFFORD A six-man attack earned Seaforth Bantams a 4.4 tie with only 12 seconds left in the game on Saturday night. Brian Lane shot the puck in a scramble in front of Clintons' net beating Dean Ryan tor the tieing goal. Lane scored three goals in the third period. His brother tarry scored the first goal of the game at the six-minute mark of the first period. John Graham, Randy Miller and 8i11 Irwin put three quick goals in in three minutes to give the Fish and Garners a eoMitianding 34. lead. During the period Seaforth's Kevin Broome received a minor penalty in fracus with Billy Crawford then was given a 10-minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike gestures at referee Bruce Collins and waving his hockey stick at Crawford in the penalty box.
