27 Guides at meeting BY MRS. BERT ALLEN week with Mrs. George Cowan also calling on other old friends in the village. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mrs. Keith Allen in the loss of her dear mother who passed away on Thursday after a lengthy illness. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cowan and Gregory of Guelph spent Stinday with his mother Mrs. Geo. Cowan. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Knox of Macklin Sa'sk., are visiting for a few days with their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Allen Shaddick and family and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Armstrong and family and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Carter and family spent Sunday at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Armstrong. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong • attended the warden's banquet held in Goderich on Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Airdrie and Pauline visited on Sunday with cousins in Bradford. On Saturday evening November 14 about 20 friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gaunt on the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary. The evening was spent playing cards followed by a dainty lunch served by their son and daughter Mrs. Dalrymple. The dining room table was centred with a three-tier illuminated cake with white candles in floral arrangements. The couple were presented with many lovely gifts including flowers from their eight grandchildren. Their son Ken of Hanover and daughter Faye, Mrs. Harold Dalrymple of Brucefield arranged for the celebration. Summerhill club investigating furniture purchase for hospital The ladies of the Summerhill Club met at the home of Isabelle Stewart Ian November 11. Ruth Jenkins opened the meeting with a poem "For Remembrance Day", after which there was a minute's silence. The roll call "What you would do if you were 21 years old again" was answered by 17 members. The minutes were read and the treasurer's report given. The buying committee is to inquire about some piece of furniture for the new sunroom at the hospital. Plans were completed for the annual supper on November 27. Everyone agreed to send $15 to the Children's Aid. The • December meeting will be held at the home of Phyllis Tyndall. The roll call will.be exchange of Christmas gifts. On the lunch committee are Isabelle Stewart, Phyllis Tyndall and Jean Vodden. On the programme are Phyllis Tyndall, Jean' Vodden and Suzanne Vodden. Mrs. Ellis won the raffle. Joanne Salverdo conducted a contest on "similes". Marion Snell gave a reading "Goblins Go Home"! A contest — "Questions and Answers to Ann Landers" was conducted by Isabelle Stewart. The meeting closed by singing the Queen and Grace. The devotional exercises were taken by the president. Mrs. Howatt read the scripture lesson followed by the Lords' Prayer in unison. The slate of officers for 1971 was read. Roll call was answered by 16 members with a verse of scripture. The topic was taken by Mrs. Wm. Manning "Let us” take time for all things". Rev. McDonald showed an interesting film depicting the lives of people in other lands and also gave a short talk at the close. The hymn "Take time to be holy" was sung followed by prayer, a social half hour was enjoyed. Mrs. Laura Lyon and Miss Edyth Beacom visited on Wednesday with their Aunt Mrs. Minnie Beacom and their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Fritz of St. Catharines. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Neil and Douglas of London spent Sunday with Mrs. Laura Lyon. Congratulations go out to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gaunt who celebrated , their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday November 14. Mrs. Radford Sr. at Blyth visited on Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shobbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Heckendorn of Kitchener visited with the Gaunt's on Thursday. Miss Ann Fairservice spent last weekend in Toronto. Eight of the W.I. members attended the Annual Convention of Women's Institute which was held in Stratford last week. Mrs. Harold Sprung of Atwood spent a few days last exhibits by each club. Do plan to attend this worthwhile event' in your area. Swan, visited with Mrs. Wm, Wright, Seaforth and attended anniversary services on the weekend. Mr. Tom Burdye has been transferred to Camp Borden and spent the weekend at his home. Mr. Paul Swan, U.W.O. London, spent the weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Glen. Swan. Mrs. Jas. Paterson and daughter Sheryl called on Mr. and Mrs. A. Paterson on Sunday. Mr. Lawrence Elliott U.W.O. London called on relatives in the village Saturday. The November meeting of Unit 1, Tuckersmith U.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. Beth Walters with an attendance of 18. Mrs. N. Sillery and Mrs: John McEwen had charge of the devotions. Mrs. McEwen opened the meeting with a story of "The Widows Mite" and spoke on "peace". Hymn 356 was sung followed by prayer. Mrs. Sillery read the 12th Chapter of Mark and stated that you cannot increase value, it must be real value. She also spoke on talents and their real value. The Offering was received by Mrs. Sillery and dedicated by Mrs. McEwen. Hymn 285 was sung followed by prayer by Mrs. Sillery. The president Mrs. Paterson chaired the business part of the meeting. A card of thanks from Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Stoll, thanking one and all for helping to make their 25th anniversary a pleasant event. A card of thanks was also received from Mrs. Sholdice for remembering her while a patient in London Hospital. A card was signed by members for Mrs. Wm. Pepper who is a patient in Clinton Hospital. Mrs. Broadfoot reminded the ladies that boxes will be packed for the shut-ins on December 2. All reports are to be ready for the December meeting. The annual Christmas party will be held at the home of Mrs. John Broadfoot on December 4 at 7 p.m. ' All ladies of Tuckersmith are invited. A program prepared by Mrs. W. McCartney and Mrs. E. Paterson and as usual Santa will be in charge of parcels. We regret the leaving of two valued members, Mrs. Jas Souter and Mrs. Jas McNaughton, who have both moved to Seaforth. A lunch was served by Mrs. Walters and her committee, Mrs. E. Thomson, Mrs. Mac Wilson, Mrs. Ross Chapman, and Mrs. McNaughton. Mrs. Walters was thanked by Mrs. Paterson for the use of her home. Twenty-seven girls took the exam for their Fireman Badge, while the Patrol Leaders and Seconders talked to the Brownies who had come to the meeting for a part of their Golden Hand test. , We played a bean bag relay game in which our team" successfully won. We then settled down for our campfire which consisted of a various namber of songs and skits. We ended the meeting with Taps. At the regular monthly meeting of the Couples' Club, Police Chief Lloyd Westlake participated in a question and answer round table discussion. The meeting was held in Ontario Street United Church on Sunday evening. Chief Westlake said that it is only with the support of the public that the police can properly do their job of law enforcement. The most important part of the public support is a telephone call to the police notifying them of persons committing break-ins, damaging or stealing property, driving irresponsibly, or even acting in a suspicious manner. The reporting of suspicious persons was linked to the recent problems of break and enters in Clinton since it seems that the thieves work in a group of three — two breaking-in while one sits in a look-out car outside the burgled residence. News of Londesboro Achievement Days for 4-H Homemaking Clubs are soon to be held in Huron County, This fall the project has been "Focus on Fitness" and the club members have learned how to maintain good physical and mental health, home and highway safety, first aid, as well as how to be a good citizen both at home and in the community. Each girl equips a first aid kit, completes a record book and finishes one of the following handcrafts: knitting, huck weaving, a stuffed animal or a mobile.
