another defenceman, blasted a
shot from the point to give
Clinton a 2-1 lead, Stu Mustard
and Bob Cook assisted.
Mustard moved Clinten'into a
3-1 lead in the second when he
found himself all alone in front
of a wide-open net. Assists went
to Cook and Cameron.
But Mitchell bounced back to
tie the score before the period
ended with Hislop and Jim
Avery combining for one goal
and Avery scoring from Hislop
and Pichard for the tying goal.
Bob Cook put Clinton into
the lead early in the third on an
unassisted goal and the strong
defence of the Clinton team shut
Mitchell out the rest of the way,
even in the last minute when
Mitchell pulled their goaltender
for a sixth attacker.
The script was somewhat the
same Sunday night in the same
arena when the high-flying
Exeter team came in for their
first visit of the year.
Larry Haugh, Hawks' top
scorer, gave Exeter the lead in
the first, Mark Jenkins came
back in the second period with a
goal assisted by Jim Toop.
Stu Mustard tipped in a point
shot from Toop and Cook for
the go-ahead goal for Clinton
early in the third.
Ron Graham finding, skating
and checking like never before,
slapped in a low hard shot after
picking up a loose puck 20 feet
in front of the Exeter goal.
Mustard earned an assist. It
proved to be the winning goal.
The stolid Clinton defence
looked as if it would protect the
two-goal lead the rest of the way
but a mix-up and a play that
Dennis Fleischauer would
probably sooner forget, put
Exeter back in the game with
only three minutes left. '
Randy Preszcator of Exeter
squirmed away from checkers,
moved inside the Clinton
blueline and let go a weak shot
along the ice just as he was hit
by a check. Fleischauer reached
out to glove the puck as it slid
along the ice but he missed and
it trickled under his glove and
into the corner of the net.
That gave Exeter the chance
to tie the game but Clinton's big
defensive stand prevented the
measure of the use of a sixth
attacker to work.
Stars of the game were
Fleischauer, Bob Rowe of
Exeter and Graham.
Anstett, Carter and Mitchell's
Glen Nicholson won stars in the
Friday game. Honorable
mention should go to Jim
Cameron for Clinton and Don
Hislop and Jim Avery for
Mitchell.
The Juniors went to Lambeth
Wednesday night and will be at
home to Tavistock on Friday
and Lucan on Sunday night.
From 1825 to 1837, the
Miramichi fires in Maine and
New Munswick burned 3 million
acres and killed more than 100
settlers.

Two of Clinton's Minor Hockey Clubs made their season debut
last week in the Zone 1 Hockey group. Zurich were very strong in
their 5-1 victory over the Fish and Garners while our Midgets looked
very impressive in their 4-0 win in the second game of the
doubleheader at Zurich.
The Ponies travelled to Zurich Wednesday night;for their opening
game of the year. This season Ken Clynick and Pete Counter are
coaching and managing the 12-year olds.

Unfortunately I missed the two exciting Junior games last
weekend and understand from all reports the club played heads up
hockey in their two impressive hOmestand wins.
The next game with Exeter at Clinton on December 20 should
find an arena packed to the rafters. Exeter has lost only one game
this year, the 3-2 lost to Clinton last Sunday";

Minor clubs
split with Zurich
in opener
Clinton minor clubs split the
doubleheader at Zurich in the
league opener last Wednesday.
The midgets had four
different players score singles in
their 4-0 victory. Mike Anstett,
Dave Faucett, Billy Crawford
and Danny Colquhoun.
Clintons two goalies, Brad
Turner and Robert Andrews
played shut-out hockey and had
to come up with some excellent
saves to keep Zurich off the
scoreboard.
The Bantams found their
opposition a little stronger and
came out of the game at the
wrong end of a 5-1 loss. Rick
Cameron scored early in the
third period on a nice play set
up by Greg Butler.
Coach 13111 Weber made one
change last week and it eonld be
the biggest move of the season
for the Clinton Juniors of the
OHA Western Junior D league.
Before Clinton's mlch with
Mitchell on Friday night, the
coach moved Ron Henry back
from his wing position to
defence and in the next two
games, the Juniors showed their
best defensive 'diSplay of the
season.
The strong defensive showing
powered the team to
back-to-back wins of 4-3 over
Mitchell and 3.2 on Sunday over
the league-leading, and
previously undefeated, Exeter
Hawks.
It wasn't just that Henry
played well on defence that
made the difference, but the fact
that with the fast, strong skater
from Blyth on the blueline, the
rest of the defence seemed to jell
for the first time this year, even
without the presence of Wayne
Arthur whose injury forced the
switch.
Arthur's injury apparently has
improved and chances are he'll
soon be back with the team to
give them a stronger defence
than ever.
The coach • has another
pleasant :dilemma, what to do
with big Derwin Carter. The
problem is, just what position to
play Carter in to make the beet
use of his rough, tough style.
Carter, who displayed his talents
with the intermediate Colts last
season, started out as a forward
but in times of stress he has been
moved back to the rearguard. He
has played equally well in both
positions and chances are, as
long as the team continues to
win regularly, he'll remain a jack
of all trades.
The Juniors played their best
hockey of the season in their 4-3
win over the much-improved
Mitchell team on Friday night.
Don Hislop caught Dennis
Fleischauer doWn in the .first
period in one of the few
defensive lapses of the night on
the Clinton teams part and after
two tries, jammed the puck into
the net.
But before the end of the first
period Clinton's defensive
brigade got the goal back, with
interest. Jim Cameron
backhanded a low shot into the
net all the way from the blueline
for an unassisted goal. Before
the period ended John Anstett,
