Question period
to be ended
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
In an effort to shorten the
length of the meetings of the
Huron County Board of
Education, the members agreed
Monday evening in Clinton to
drop the oral question period
and to have all questions
concerning the meeting or any
lef Matters 'written out and
tprgented to the administrative
staff.
The answers then would be
given to individual board
members at some time following
the meeting when administrative
staff members have had an
opportunity to gather all the
pertinent data relative to the
question.
It has been the custom of the
Huron -County Board of
Education to permit the
members of the press present at
the meeting to ask questions of
the board during the question
period.
Press representatives
requested the board to give some
consideration to allowing a
Maximum of five minutes at the
end of the regular board meeting
for the press to pose questions in
the presence of the entire board.
Gordon Moir claimed that if
the board members were not
permitted to ask questions
except by writing them on cards,
the press should not have that
privilege either. Moir stated the
press could speak to the director
of education or the chairman
following the Meeting if there
were any questions,
One member, of the press,
Mrs. Shirley Keller stated she
felt it was important for the
entire board,, to know what
questions were being asked by
the press and to hear the answers
given to them.
Indications from Chairman
John Lavis were that the matter
would be included on the next
meeting agenda and a decision
reached at that time.

report on correct practices of
religious education in Huron
County schools.
He said all the elementary
schools opened each day with
religious exercises and that no
formal program of religious
instruction was reported by any
secondary school in the county.
Mr. Coulter added that all but
three elementary schools
registered dissatisfaction with
the guidebooks for teaching
religion which were issued in
1944.
"Most felt that they were
uninteresting and the activities
very antiquated," said Mr.

Reeve Harold Robinson,
Howick, asked members of the
Huron County executive
committee Friday afternoon
why it had not recommended to
concur with a resolution from
the County of Perth to abolish
County Boards of Education.
"I think it is regrettable,"
stated Robinson.
Chairman Jack Alexander told
him his committee had felt that
since the county boards of
education had been established
at considerable expense, "they
should have a chance".
Reeve James Hayter, Stephen,,
reminded council that if
ratepayers felt the costs of
education were too high, they
would have an opportunity very
shortly to elect new board
members whom they felt would
keep a closer eye on expenses,
Charles Thomas, reeve of
Grey,'said he had been receiving
some complaints which should
have gone to the school board.
"Pm just not sure that the
county school board is working
very well when this happens,"
added Thomas.
Robinson stated that since the
Perth resolution had been
introduced, there was an
investigation planned into the
workings of the Perth County
Board of Education,
Walter Sheardown,
deputy-reeve of Goderich, asked
the committee to explain its
reasoning for not concurring
with a Goderich Town Council
'resolution to have welfare
assistance administered by the
province.
Alexander answered that the
committee had not wanted to
give the province "another
foothold".
Sheardown noted that welfare
assistance cases in Goderich had
risen from 38 in August to 53 in
September,
effective January 1, 1971.
In the future, all secretarial
staff being engaged by the
county department will be
channelled through "one person
and one person only".
This policy is set out only to
retain uniformity among this
particular section of the county
staff, the report concluded,
Drug education
'Continued from Page One)
The teachers, said Mr.
Coulter, prefer to include it
incidentally in the regular health
program or when discussion
involving the topic is promoted
by a pupil or group.
"Drug education is an integral
part of the health program and
over emphasis is intentionally
avoided," Mr, Coulter reported.
"Generally four to six classroom
periods are specifically devoted
to instruction on drugs. These
may contain information on
coffee,s aspirin etc. as well as the
more sensational name drugs.
Instruttion is strohgest in Grades
nine and ten but occurs in
programs from Grades five to
twelve,"
