It used to be that apple
pickers get all the apples they
could eat, free, and tired legs
from long hours standing on
ladders.
On the farrn of Ross
Middleton, RR 2, 13ayfield this
fall, the pickers are still getting
the free apples, but they no
longer have to worry about the
tired legs from hours on a
ladder.
The reason is a picking
platform, designed by Mr.
Middleton that saves manpower,
time and damage to the trees.
The design is adapted from
similar machines Mr. Middleton
saw in operation in Quebec but
has a few new aspects of its own.
The sturdy steel frame was
built onto a farm wagon by a
local welder, Frank de Jong. It is
towed through the orchards by a
farm tractor and pulled in as
close as possible to a tree. Then
three platforms are extended
into the upper branches of the
tree and the pickers walk out
and pick freely from solid
footing, The platforms at the
front and back of the unit can
be swung in 180-degree angles
church calendars which will be
on sale at the Fall Bazaar and
Tea being held at the church on
Saturday, November 14.
The next meeting of the
group will be a work meeting at
the church at 8 p.m. to decorate
for the Tea. Members are asked
to bring their Christmas cakes so
they can be wrapped and tagged
for the sale.
Mrs. Robert Gibb then gave a

Mrs. Barrie Walter's group was
in charge of the program at the
October 6 meeting of
Holmesville UCW.
Mrs. Walter opened the
meeting, the theme being
"Thanksgiving."
Following singing of a hymn
and prayer, Mrs. Orville Blake
read the scripture.
Meditation and prayer was
given by Mrs. K. Harris.
Roll call was answered by 21
members using the word
"thanks."

While the three-man. crew is
picking from the platforms,
others can pick the lower
branches from the ground.
Mr, Middleton says the unit
cuts picking time in half and at
the same time cuts down the
number of pickers needed,
After the apples are piPked by
the crew on the platforms, their -
baskets are passed down to the r
floor of the wagon through hoes
in the roof, and the apples are
stored either in large bins or in
crates stacked in the wagon.
The unit moves from one tree
to another throughout the
orchard.
' Now the pickers have the
advantages of the free fruit
without the back-breaking work,
but then, as any apple picker
will tell you, you can only eat so
many apples before you never
want to see an apple again.

her talk with lovely coloured
pictures of the buildings and
intricately hand-painted vases
and jars.
At the conclusion of the
meeting Mrs. Viola Lampman
and Mrs. Robert Gibb assisted
the hostess with the lunch. '
The topic titled "Self-pity"
was read by Mrs. E. Grigg
followed by a humorous skit on
self-pity done by Mrs. E. Grigg,
Mrs. Ben Whitely and Mrs. Don
Harris.
A reading was given by Mrs.
Les Jervis titled Thankfulness
naming so many things to bZ
thankful for like sun, moon, rain
and shine, food and friends.
Mrs. Win. Norman and Mrs. E.
Grigg sang a duet.
Mrs. Don Harris read writings
of Elbert Hubbard II including
positive commandments to a
better, more useful life.
Mrs. Les Jervis read a record
kept of things to be thankful for
against those not desired.
Mrs. K. Harris read an article '
on the art of living, "We must
choose between the deadly art
of non-living and the art of real

During the business period
