Juniors t ump Hawks in season opener
Jenior hockey returned to.
Clinton on Sunday night and, if
it is an example of the type of
hockey that can be expected,
Clinton residents are, in for a
great winter,
Clinton. Juniors whipped
Mitchell Hawks 16.3 in their
first exhibition game since
,entering the OHA, Western
Junior "D" league. But it wasn't
so much that the Juniors won,
but in the way that they won,
that holds out so much
encouragement for hockey in
the area this year.
Junior hockey has a
, reputation of being a rough,
tough, sport and Sunday's game
proved the fact as referees
handed out a total of 26
penalties. But the smaller, faster
Clinton Club resisted what often
Seemed to be an attempt by the
Hawks to turn the game into a
brawl, and stuck to fast, exciting
hockey.
"Coach Bill Weber's
well-conditioned squad came out
skating and were still skating at
the " final whistle. They
fore-checked and back-checked,
and looked every inch of the
lop-sided score.
Theree, is no doubt that the
performance of the new team
surPrised a few people, not the
least of all the players and team
officials themselves. The
hard-skating style put the Hawks
on the defensive. Bob Cook put
Clinton in the lead right off the
start when he scored at 1;29
from linemates Stew' Mustard
and Fisher, The same three Game

Mustard,
.Clinton Wit up a four goal
lead in the first before Wayne
Sinning finally broke through
for Mitchell while Clinton was
two men short- Even then, the
Hawk player got a break. It was
one of the first .shots on the
Clinton net and hit the right goal
post and glanced off into the left
Corner of the net.
Although he was not tested
for much of the game, goalie
Dave Slade showed strong play
between the posts before Dennis
Flischat.ter took over for the
last half of the game, Fleisphauer
' allowed only one goal.
Mitchell scored one, goal in
each of the three periods while
Clinton gidod eight in the

go*, and topped it off with
fotir more in the third,
Besides COO end Mustard
Clinton got A. pair of goals each
from Clete Proctor and Bob
Johnston with singles going to
Derwin. Carter, Wayne Cantelon,
Gary Cummings, Rio. pantie
and Ron Graham, Bill
Carnochan, scored the -.last two
goals for the Hawks.
It was a .rough game. Clinton's
Derwin Carter went out in the
first period after a hard check in
front of the Mitchell net
dislocated his elbow. He is
expected to be ready for action
again this weekend.
Although they didn't fall into
the trap of trying to out-muscle
the Hawks, the Juniors didn't
back down from hard hitting.
Big defence/Toon Wayne Arthur,
John Anstett, JIM Cameron And
Jim Toop handed out hard
checks.
The Juniors played the type
of hock ey they will have to play
all year if they expect to
continue their success, During
the few times they did start to
play the Hawk's of play-the-man
type of hockey they found
themselves being pushed back
into their own end. While they
were playing the ptick and
fore-checking, they bad the
Hawks on the run and forced
mistakes that led to many of
their goals,
Local fans will be hoping for
the same kind of hockey when
the Juniors take on Lambeth in
exhibition play at the
Community Centre, Friday at

Central Huron Volleyball teams
successful in Seaforth tournament
In an exhibition tournament
in Seaforth on Friday, the
C.H.S.S. junior and senior boys'
teams met the Seaforth's teams,
In junior action the Clinton
boys won five out of five games.
Under Mr. Cull's competent
coaching the boys will go far this
season. Watch for news of their
tournament later on in the
season.
The seniors played three
games with Seaforth and won all
three games by 15-7, 15.9, and
15-9. Mr. Allen is coaching the
seniors and they, also, will go far
in the Huron-Perth league.
The net bulges behind the'Mitchell Hawks' goalie as Clinton Juniors notch another goal in Sunday
night's 16.3 bout at the Community Centre. Mitchell used three different goaltenders in a vain
attempt to stem the strong. Clinton attack led by Bob Cook with four goals. — staff photo.

. Marlene Cunningham gets a shot away despite the close checking of four Stratford Centralvlayers
in junior girls' basketball action Friday at Central Huron Secondary School. Marlene was a leading
scorer in the CHHS loss. —staff photo.
