Clinton. News-Record, ThomIgy., October I, 1970 High school football starts today for broasPorth - BY JQL.ANDE ANISINP How would you like to spend those lazy, lazy, crazy days of lannnier teaching 294 giddy teenagers how to perspire? girls, yet! That's what 30 exceptionally qualified physical education teachers from all over Ontario let themselves in for this summer, Sounds crazy? Well, every Year the Department of Education runs a camp up on Lake Couchiching (north of Lake Simcoe) teaching High. School delegates different aspects of school sports. This year Gordon Levis and myself had the pleasure of representing Central Huron Secondary School at this unique . sports and leadership development camp. The girls were divided into cabins of 12 girls each making a total of around 14 cabins. The best equipment was ours; the best teachers were at our• disposal and the organization was faultless. But there was one thing the Department did not reckon on and that was the varying types of girls coming to camp. We were by no means fantastic gymnasts or outstanding basketball players and provisions were Made for this tiny circumstance; but, they reckoned without cabin 21. We were the rowdiest, most Misbehaved and critical cabin 25 years. We griped about not being able to wash our gym suits everyday, and they sure needed it. Of course welorgot about the 282 other girls who needed gym suits washed. "Forgetting" was Last'. , Wednesday afternoon Central Huron and Stratford Central Senior boys soccer teams clashed in their opening game of the Huron-Perth season. Heads up ball by the defence slid the •hAgresslynneas of the forwards ,gave brtss a 2!0'ir` Grade 13 students were advised this week that they must think about their University choice and make application out before November the fifteenth. . This is a change from last year when applications were processed in March.. Counsellors are, shifting their priorities, in order to be . able to assist students who must do some important reading of calendars one vice we never conquered, We forgot to do assignments, forgot that we had just smuggled food out of the dining ball for midnight snacks, forgot to put polish on our running shoes and, at times, forgot to come to class. But who, could stay angry at 12, lovable, innocent girls, like Cabin 21, for very long? That was their fatal mistake. We sent more counsellors to where they hang-out with migraines and ulcers than all of the other cabins combined plus the Maintenance • staff and the kitchen staff. All the, good times we enjoyed at camp were magnified when we had campfires, folk choirs, and visitors especially those of the male species. Once, a whole group of French students came to visit us while touring Canada. If you've never heard 294 girls scream in utter joy, disbelief and amazement you haven't missed anything. They said, through our lucky bilingual sisters, that this sort of camp is unheard of in Paris, especially for girls! We felt extra special and proud that night when we sang 0, Canada. Our duties upon returning to school keep us very busy. We are on the Student's Council and executive of the Athletic Association. We are expected to do our share of free intramural refereeing of basketball and volleyball games and help the physical education staff in any way we can. This will make for a busy year for all of us, but, remember, busy people don't have time to get into trouble. The game was close throughout and Stratford had many chances to score but excellent goaltending by Clinton's Ross MacDonald gave CHSS their first win. %Goals were*;scored..„by Wayne CAnteleh anOtuViIstard. and decide which Universities and courses they want to apply for. It would appear that the Universities are going to put more stress on Grade Eleven and Twelve achievement since students will have no Grade Thirteen marks or Aptitude Scores to offer before the second half of the form goes in on March 1, 1971. The third meeting of the Clinton N Muscular Maidens was held at Benmiller on September 21. The meeting, along with a hike which was soon a disaster because of the rain. The group drove home through a tornado. When all arrived safely at Mrs. Bigson's the meeting was opened with the pledge. The minutes were read by Nancy Gibbings and the leaders then discussed the care of eyes, hair, feet, and skin. The meeting was closed and all enjoyed a supper of hamburgers, prepared by the club on a barbeque in the garage. Dr. Mowatt, "the local Representative for the CNIB, has pointed out that there are eight blind people in the Clinton area. To provide rehabilitation, residence and recreation service, it costs the CNIB annually an average of $200 for each person. Just to look after our own Clinton we should raise $1600 a year for this cause. In order even to approach this figure, those of us who can see should consider giving two dollars or more when the canvasser calls upon us. Let us show our gratitude for our own sight by helping those less fortunate. Ttitils., October Central at $eafortb, Listowel at Wingham, Northwestern at Goderich and Mitchell.at St. Marys.
