The spotted, "polka dot"
rile has a three to five inch
val-shaped carapace which is
ull-black or brown with an
rregular pattern of
el low-orange spots. The
number and location of these
spots, as well as the intensity of
their coloring, varies
considerably even in specimens
from the same locality. The
black or brown head and limbs
are also spotted and the throat
may be marbled with orange and
black. The black or brown
plastron usually has an irregular
orange colored area in the
centre. The tail of the male is
about twice as long as the
female's.
This little turtle is not
entirely aquatic. Its' feet are less
extensively webbed than 'those
of larger aquatic turtles and it
may be found ambling through
dry leaves in the woods or wet
grasses in , swampy areas. It
prefers small, shallow bodies of
water such as ponds, brooks and
swamps. Like the painted turtle
it basks in large groups, neck and
legs outstretched to the sun.
The spotted turtle feeds on,
insects, snails, spiders, dead fish,
tadpoles and aquatic plants.
In June, two to four white
elliptical eggs are laid in sandy
locations. They measure
approximately one inch and a
quarter in length and hatch in
about three months. _
a
A young
spotted turtle has only single
spot on each plate at first, but as
it grows older more spoteappear
and in time are also visible on
the legs and tail.
This turtle which has been
known to live for 42 years, is
restricted to southwestern
Ontario, from the Lake Erie
counties northward to the Bruce
Peninsula and Parry Sound
Forest District.
It is extremely rare even in
the United States and therefore
is on the list of endangered
species. The depletion of its
natural habitat, by draining and
filling of swamps and ponds, is
one reason for its near
extinction; excessive collecting
for the pet trade is another.
Efforts to breed this turtle in
captivity or in protected natural
areas might now be the only way'
to save it.
