THIS WEEK'S SALE PRICE 995 $ Pontiac-Buick GODERICH News of Constance It would appear that rabies will continue to pose a potential hazard to dogs and cats in Huron County. In order to alleviate, at least in part, this hazard it has been decided that the Canada Department of Agriculture, Health. of Animals Branch, in co-operation with the Huron County Health Unit, will again conduct free anti-rabies vaccination clinics for dogs and cats in this county. The clinics will commence on August 24 in the northern area, and end on September 16 in the southern area. Confirmed cases of rabies in animals continued at a relatively high level in Huron County in the 12-month period ending March 31,1970. Rabies cases involving both domestic and wild animals totalled 69 for the 12-month period. This is 20 less than in the previous Year. During the year more than 5,117 dogs and cats were vaccinated at some 29 free clinics conducted by the Health of Animals -Branch and the • Huron .County Health Unit. This represented an increase of 32 per cent over the previous year. Huron County continues to be among the counties of Ontario with a higher incidence of rabies. The wild .,4ife population, with an increased number of skunks in the area, indicates that the occurrence of rabies will increase during the next 12-month period. Skunks and foxes are the, two main groups of animals which spread rabies from wild life to our domestic animals, and for this reason any unusual actions in these animals should be treated with extreme caution. Contact . between • these animals and domestic animals or humans should immediately be reported to the area Health of Animals Branch in order that proper action may be taken to eliminate further spread of the disease. Rabies is a virus disease which affects the central nervous system of animals and humans. The symptoms produced by the disease vary from incident to incident, but, by and large, all animals behave in a peculiar manner and attempt to attack other animals and thus propagate the disease, as live virus is frequently found in the saliva of infected animals. The disease is usually fatal if proper evasive action is not taken prior to the beginning of symptoms of the disease. Dates for clinics are as follows. Tuesday, September 1, St. Augustine, 9 a,m. — 12 noon; Auburn Community Centre, 1:30,p.m. 4:30 p.m. ' Wednesday, September 2: Amberley Orange Hall, 9 a.m. — 12 noon; Dungannon, Agricultural Hall, 1:30 p.m. — 4:301ent. Thursday; September 3, St. Helen'S, Community Hall, 9 a.m. --12 noon. Friday, September 4, Goderich Fire Hall, Waterloo Street, from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, Clinton Community Centre, 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 9,, Seaforth, Community Centre, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. For other areas of Huron County check your local newspaper.
