Safety chains are required by Ontario law and electrical connections which activate turn, stop and tail lights arid illuminate the license plate on the trailer. The Ontario Safety League reminds car drivers that hauling a boat and trailer requires new and different techniques. The longer, heavier load takes more time to stop and accelerate, and greater distances for passing and returning to the correct lane. Greater concentration and caution in all aspects of driving must be observed to successfully cope with the additional hazards. held at Seaforth the weight is balanced forward on the trailer tongue and all supports and rollers are equally supporting the contours of the hull from the keel to the chines. The boat should be secured to the trailer by the winch rope at the bow with the stem snugged up to the winch mast and securely locked in position. Transom chains with patent tightening and locking devices are recommended for securing the stern of the boat to the trailer. The Ontario Safety League states that only frame hitches should be used for trailering boats on high-speed Reid reunion TvieAr • .freTe, ••••• 7in/hen you're ready to name "Ahe day...see the beautiful RAINBOW VOIDING LINU:i.?: INVITATIONS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS ANSTETT JEWELLERS LTD. .Clinton Walkerton And Seaforth .!q1,2-5. .:saisscscsocassoacsmscsocsziocsocs‘ BROWNIE'S DRIVE-IN THEATRE CLINTON Box Office Opens at LOO p.m. FIRST SHOW AT DUSK + THURS., FRI. -- July 9-10 — DOUBLE FEATURE — "Once Upon A Time In The Old West" Henry Fonda - Claudia Cardinals Jason Roberts in Color "Those .Darling Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies" Tony Curtis - Tarry nimbi Geo hobo Color SAT. :MON. - TUES. The Ontario Safety League points out that the efficiency of any lifejacket depends on its condition. ' A worn-out, water-logged lifejacket could act more like an anchor than a lifesaver. The League strongly advises checking all lifejackets at the beginning of the season to be sure their buoyancy is still good and the jacket is performing its function properly. Here is a good method to test either adult or children's lifejackets: Put the lifejacket on making sure that the side marked 'front' is over the chest and that all fasteners and tapes are secured firmly. Then lie face down in the water, preferably off a beach where you are not beyond your depth, and let the body go limp in a 'cleadinan' float. If the jacket is properly designed and still retains its buoyancy, the ' O F LIFEJACKETS wearer should be automatically turned on his back with the face held out of the water. If this does not happen, discard the jacket and buy a new one. It is inexpensive life insurance. Test the coverings and fastenings of the jacket to make sure they are strong enough to sustain the weight of a person if jumping into the water from a dock or a boat. Deteriorated coverings or fastenings will allow the material to tear and the wearer will suddenly find himself without a jacket as it is ripped off by the force of hitting the water. Check kapok-filled jackets to be sure the vinyl inner lining is still intact. Squeeze the jacket and if there is a sound of air escaping, the vinyl has been perforated and the floatation device should be discarded as kapok becomes useless when water-soaked. The Ontario Safety League strongly stresses the importance of fitting children with the proper size jacket according to their weight. Children's jackets come in two sizes; up to 45 pounds, and from 45 to 90 pounds. An over-size jacket is dangerous for a child as it will often turn the wearer upside • down in the water. TOWING PLEASURE BOATS Trailering a pleasure boat on a high-speed thoroughfare with limits up to 60 and 70 miles per hour requires special knowledge and expertise if it is to be accomplished safely. The Ontario Safety League states that the first consideration must be the capacity of the trailer. This should exceed the load by at least 200 pounds. The average 15 or 16 foot fiberglass runabout powered by a matching outboard motor plus gas tanks and equipment weighs approximately 1,200 pounds. This means that the rated capacity of the trailer to safely haul this unit should be at least 1,400 pounds. The next important step is to balance and fit the boat to the trailer so that 10 to 15 per cent of Over 40 guests attended the Annual Reid Reunion at Lion's Park Seaforth on June 28, Anna and Bruce Keys were in charge of sports which the children enjoyed. The persons coming the farthest distance were Lillian Mercer and Alec and Sadie Whitfield, London. Two new babies of the year were Mary Kathleen Hunt of Seaforth and Carlin Sean Riley of Bryanston. Carol Hunt read the secretary One hundred and twenty four Grade 12 students enrolled in Brock University July 6 and started a six-week course Tuesday to determine their a dap tibility to university methods teaching. Representing Central Huron Secondary School is Manica Ruth Gemeinhadt of Bayfield. Those who indicate by their performance that they are ready for university without going through Grade 13 will be offered spots in Brock's 1970.71 freshman class. Students are required to take 4 courses. They must take one discipline from each of the following areas: Humanities, Well-known Canadian broadcaster Betty Kennedy sent a letter to Mr. Ron W. Jewitt of Clinton Public School this week lo give thanks for a contribution received for "Project Schoolhouse". The funds will help build a school in the Commonwealth Caribbean Island of St. Vincent as Ontario's International Education Year project. The United Nations designated 1970 as 'EY year, to help promote better understanding between peoples of the world. MrS. Kennedy is Chairman of and treasurer's reports. Doris and George Cantelon were appointed a committee for next year, Considerable interest was taken in the new family album in which pictures and writings were placed by the various families from the ancestors to the present time. The picnic will be held next year on fourth Sunday in June in same place. All sat down to a sumptuous picnic supper. Sciences and Social Studies. The fourth subject can be an option of Mathematics or Languages, or, they can take an additional subject from one of the above mentioned areas. Full university facilities are offered the candidates including sporting activities and organized trips to the Shaw and Stratford Festivals, University Residence will house students who come from 50 centres in Ontario. In order to join the course students had to be recommended by their high school principal and guidance officer. More than 275 applications were received by Brock. The Minister's Advisory Committee on Educational Assistance which was established by the Hon. William Davis last year. The committee stresses that the drive for funds is a pennies and nickels program. Chartered banks throughout the province are co-operating in the project by making collections from school principals, and are offering receipts on the spot. Grades= one to eight at the Clinton school contributed $15.00 to the fund. 14e4ia .Applebaum,, former music .director of the Stratford' Festival, ' this 1season will compose the score for The, Architect and the Emperor of Assyria, 'opening July .2Q. at the Avon Theatre, Artistic Director .lean Oascon announced today, Mr. Applebaum has been Jassociated with Stratford since. the Festival "opened in )953.. The fanfares lie eninpeSed for that initial season have become a part of the Festival tradition, and are played .before every. performance, He organized, the; first music season at Stratford in 1955, continuing as music • director until 1900 and, in 1966, arranging the international Conference of Composers held at Stratford. The distinguished Canadian Musician has composed for most major theatrical ventures in this country, including. Canada's Centennial celebrations, EXPO '67 and, more recently, the. opening of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. He has been music director with the National Film Board and scored the music for many NFB films and as the CRC's music consultant for television he wrote music for many television and radio programs. He is also music consultant for the St. Lawrence Arts Centre. Mr. Applebaum holds several administrative posts including ' that of Chairman of the CAB Committee for the Promotion of Canadian Music, and Chairman of CAPAC. He is also a member of • the advisory panels to the Canada Council and the Ontario Council for the Arts and is on the executive of the Canada Music Council and the Canadian League of .Composers. Mr. Applebaum has composed the music for some 23 Stratford productions and has served as musical director on many others. His most recent work for the Festival was the 1969 Hamlet: A newcomer to Stratford, but a familiar figure to Anierican "The 'turtle lives `twixt plated decks Which practically conceal its sex. I think it clever of the turtle In such a fix to be so fertile." Ogden Nash , Turtles first appeared on the earth some 200 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs have long been extinct, but turtles have managed to survive and have remained relatively unchanged for at least 150 million years. This long survival may be due, in part, to the turtle's unusual skeleton. The top shell (known as the carapace), is formed from overgrown, widened ribs. Beneath is the lower shell, called the plastron. The horny plates or shields of the carapace and _plastron are known as scutes. Males are usually smaller than females and often have a longer tail, a concave plastron and long nails on their front feet. Turtles have no teeth but their horny bill will tear plant and animal food. They have lungs and are air breathers. Unlike snakes, turtles have moveable eyelids which are closed when they sleep. External ear openings are covered by a membrane. and hearing of air-borne sounds is questionable but turtles are keenly aware of ground vibrations. All turtles lay eggs and even sea turtles must come ashore to lay them. The eggs are often eaten by predators thus reducing the number that hatch. The young are also preyed upon and are frequently killed by automobiles while on their way to water. In cool climates these reptiles must hibernate under soil or under mud at the bottom of ponds to escape freezing. They are noted for longevity and there are records of some species living to 138 years of age. Even some small species have been known to survive longer than 40 years in captivity. In this day, however, longevity of turtles could be a thing of the past. There are presently 49 forms of turtles and tortoises throughout the world listed by the Survival Service Commission, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, as being threatened With extinction. Ontario's spotted turtle is on this list and reptile authorities also consider several other turtles endangered as far as their Canadian range is CONcernod. *1.4.0XXONNO...0,1111 GOOD TWIGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU HELP RED CROSS •r.TAATArreVrers,liv:r..... .• • Sr.:: b`;‘4,* WiliTsTiditi&TtATTMATreTtWoo..stseeo stage, film yncl television audiences, .Salem Ludwig joins the 1979 Festival company as Macey 'IP Arnold WealcOr's, play, The Friends, opening July 22 at ,the Alton, Mr, Ludwig replaces Stephen Murray,. announced previously for the role, Mr, Murray will continue in his role of Sir Peter Teazle in The School for Scandal. . • Mr. Ludwig was seen this past season in New York as Myron Berger in AW0e and Sing! a role be will repeat when the production reopens in the fall. Man-made changes in the natural world are occurring so rapidly that a species common today might be endangered or extinct tomorrow. The depletion of habitat, swampy areas in particular, is especially hard on reptiles and amphibians which unlike some ohter kinds of wildlife cannot adapt to vastly different surroundings. Pollution is affecting not only the turtles' habitat but could, like pesticides, also affect their food supply. The increasing popularity of reptiles as pets (perhaps because of "high-rise" living), is also taking a toll. Collecting for the pet trade has certainly played a part in reducing the numbers of some species. More knowledge of turtles, their needs and where they are found, might help in some way to encourage a concern for their future welfare, Note: There are eight species of turtles in Ontario, the most common being the Painted Turtle which will- begin the series. ,kokuitIsVcSmitstOsWol Saturday, BAYFIELD Orchestra Admission DANCING Modern July and Square "THE TRUE $1..00 Per U TONES" person PAVILION itt 25. p . pA R lic GODERICH 30 PHONETHE 4 ZE1 0 AIRCONDITJONE FOR SIX MORE DAYS Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun., Mon., Tues, — July 9, 10,11, 12, 13 & 1' 2 shows Fri. & Sat. starting at 7:30 & 9:15 p.m. One showing only on Thurs., Sun., Mon. & Tues. starting at 8 p.m. " 2015 stows INGO From Color AMERICAN COMEDY SOUND IN• IVIASII An DONALD Co Strong Produced ORIGINAL i MA Lilt "—Pauline Kael, New Yorker Conlin, toiovewts SUTHERLAND' ELLIOTT SAW IlDIRAMN 'ROM RUM •!D by pirated by PREMINGER ROBERT ALTMAN a novel by MOD HOOKER Mum by OM by DE LUXE® PANAVISIONe SOUNDTRACK RECORDING Ingo Preminger GOULD ANN PFLUG • AK Screenplay by RING LARDNER, CAME IS SINCE WIER ON COLUMBIA WAR 1 Production • TOM AV ANIONOIS Jr, THE RECORDS ____=..
