PROPER USE
A' lifejacket is the most
important piece of safety
equipment aboard any pleasure
boat, In a situation of extreme
hazard afloat, a lifejacket could
well be the only means of saving
your life.
The Ontario Safety League
points out that the efficiency of
any lifejacket depends on its
condition. ' A worn-out,
water-logged lifejacket could act
more like an anchor than a
lifesaver. The League strongly
advises checking all lifejackets at
the beginning of the season to be
sure their buoyancy is still good
and the jacket is performing its
function properly.
Here is a good method to test
either adult or children's
lifejackets:
Put the lifejacket on making
sure that the side marked 'front'
is over the chest and that all
fasteners and tapes are secured
firmly. Then lie face down in the
water, preferably off a beach
where you are not beyond your
depth, and let the body go limp
in a 'cleadinan' float. If the
jacket is properly designed and
still retains its buoyancy, the
' O F LIFEJACKETS
wearer should be automatically
turned on his back with the face
held out of the water. If this
does not happen, discard the
jacket and buy a new one. It is
inexpensive life insurance.
Test the coverings and
fastenings of the jacket to make
sure they are strong enough to
sustain the weight of a person if
jumping into the water from a
dock or a boat. Deteriorated
coverings or fastenings will allow
the material to tear and the
wearer will suddenly find
himself without a jacket as it is
ripped off by the force of hitting
the water. Check kapok-filled
jackets to be sure the vinyl inner
lining is still intact. Squeeze the
jacket and if there is a sound of
air escaping, the vinyl has been
perforated and the floatation
device should be discarded as
kapok becomes useless when
water-soaked.
The Ontario Safety League
strongly stresses the importance
of fitting children with the
proper size jacket according to
their weight. Children's jackets
come in two sizes; up to 45
pounds, and from 45 to 90
pounds. An over-size jacket is
dangerous for a child as it will
often turn the wearer upside
• down in the water.
TOWING PLEASURE BOATS
Trailering a pleasure boat on a
high-speed thoroughfare with
limits up to 60 and 70 miles per
hour requires special knowledge
and expertise if it is to be
accomplished safely.
The Ontario Safety League
states that the first consideration
must be the capacity of the
trailer. This should exceed the
load by at least 200 pounds. The
average 15 or 16 foot fiberglass
runabout powered by a
matching outboard motor plus
gas tanks and equipment weighs
approximately 1,200 pounds.
This means that the rated
capacity of the trailer to safely
haul this unit should be at least
1,400 pounds.
The next important step is to
balance and fit the boat to the
trailer so that 10 to 15 per cent of

"The 'turtle lives `twixt plated
decks
Which practically conceal its sex.
I think it clever of the turtle
In such a fix to be so fertile."
Ogden Nash
, Turtles first appeared on the
earth some 200 million years
ago, long before the dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs have long been
extinct, but turtles have
managed to survive and have
remained relatively unchanged
for at least 150 million years.
This long survival may be due, in
part, to the turtle's unusual
skeleton. The top shell (known
as the carapace), is formed from
overgrown, widened ribs.
Beneath is the lower shell, called
the plastron. The horny plates or
shields of the carapace and
_plastron are known as scutes.
Males are usually smaller than
females and often have a longer
tail, a concave plastron and long
nails on their front feet.
Turtles have no teeth but
their horny bill will tear plant
and animal food. They have
lungs and are air breathers.
Unlike snakes, turtles have
moveable eyelids which are
closed when they sleep. External
ear openings are covered by a
membrane. and hearing of
air-borne sounds is questionable
but turtles are keenly aware of
ground vibrations. All turtles lay
eggs and even sea turtles must
come ashore to lay them. The
eggs are often eaten by predators
thus reducing the number that
hatch. The young are also
preyed upon and are frequently
killed by automobiles while on
their way to water.
In cool climates these reptiles
must hibernate under soil or
under mud at the bottom of
ponds to escape freezing. They
are noted for longevity and there
are records of some species living
to 138 years of age. Even some
small species have been known
to survive longer than 40 years
in captivity.
In this day, however,
longevity of turtles could be a
thing of the past. There are
presently 49 forms of turtles and
tortoises throughout the world
listed by the Survival Service
Commission, International
Union for Conservation of
Nature and Natural Resources,
as being threatened With
extinction. Ontario's spotted
turtle is on this list and reptile
authorities also consider several
other turtles endangered as far as
their Canadian range is
CONcernod.

association with Stratford.
Man-made changes in the
natural world are occurring so
rapidly that a species common
today might be endangered or
extinct tomorrow. The depletion
of habitat, swampy areas in
particular, is especially hard on
reptiles and amphibians which
unlike some ohter kinds of
wildlife cannot adapt to vastly
different surroundings. Pollution
is affecting not only the turtles'
habitat but could, like
pesticides, also affect their food
supply. The increasing
popularity of reptiles as pets
(perhaps because of "high-rise"
living), is also taking a toll.
Collecting for the pet trade has
certainly played a part in
reducing the numbers of some
species.
More knowledge of turtles,
their needs and where they are
found, might help in some way
to encourage a concern for their
future welfare,
Note: There are eight species
of turtles in Ontario, the most
common being the Painted
Turtle which will- begin the
series.
