The official opening of the provincial parks in Southern Ontario took place on May 8, 1970. The Victoria Day Holiday weekend saw hundreds of people enjoying the park , facilities. All of the Lake Huron. District parks reported a satisfactory number of campers and picnickers even though the weather was not very favourable. The fees charged are the same as last year — $1.00 for a daily vehicle permit which allows the occupants of a vehicle use of the facilities of a park for day use only. Persons wishing to occupy a campsite are required to purchase a campsite and vehicle permit at a fee of $2.50 a day. Attendance in 1970 at . the provincial parks administered by the Department of Lands and 'Forests in the Lake Huron District is expected to show an increase similar to 1969. Attendance in 1969 totalled 475,000 visitors which compared to the 1968 attendance of 430,000 was an increase of 9.5 percent. . In the Lake Huron District the Department administers five provincial parks: Point Farms, Inverhuron, Sauble Falls, Craigleith and Cyprus Lake. The staff required to operate and maintain these parks consists mainly of university students. This year 40 students have been employed for the summer season. Throughout the past winter when most people consider the parks dormant, •work has been going on to enlarge and improve the present facilities. Access roads have been constructed, dead trees removed, fuelwood cut and hauled, trailer sewage disposal units constructed, soil hauled for improvement to present sites, and comfort stations, signs and tables painted. In addition to these many routine maintenance jobs have been completed during the winter to prepare for the 1970 campers and visitors. This year every effort will again be made to provide, sufficient facilities at the provincial parks. However campers should note that we will no longer be able to provide "overflow" accommodation for additional campers as was done in the past. This year when all the campsites in a park are full to capacity, people will be referred to nearby private campgrounds or other parks. Staff at the parks are being provided with information on local alternate facilities so as to be helpful in relocating campers when necessary. With this in mind it should be mentioned that the new Cyprus Lake Provincial Park near Tobermory was opened in July of last year and as i yet has not been fully discovered by campers. It soon will be though because word of its uniqueness and attractiveness is quickly spreading among campers. The park is 1,000 acres in area and at present offers 168 completed campsites, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and a number of hiking trails which lead to scenic lookouts and caves along the Georgian Bay shoreline.
