Usually, I'm right at the heart

Let's take last week as an

We had an all-week guest at

extra digging to tie up all the
loose ends. Believe me,it can be
quite a perplexing puzzement to
get the facts out to the people
without antagonizing the public
body about whom you are
writing. To say the very least,
there are times when I am
thoroughly upset about the
whole matter until the story
appears in print and I can make
an assessment of the amount of
furor I have unleashed.
Also during the week, council

love to find but really dislike to

to the dog chasing the car and
not knowing what to do with it
if he catches it, After a little
chat with my editor, I was
appointed as the staff member
to pour a little coal on the fire —
and naturally, to get burned if
the flames got too high. That
can be disconcerting too.
In the midst of all this
professional pussyfooting, the
children were playing an
important role in my life. They
persuaded me that I should drive
them to the city for an evening
of shopping. So with my
daughter and her U,S.A. pal and

ENAMEL FINISHES
You can maintain a beautiful
enamel finish almost effortlessly,
according to the Canadian Paint
Manufacturers Association. Just
wash the surface with a mild
detergent solution or a
commercial Cleaning agent. If
you have any doubts about the
cleanser, test it out in an
inconspicuous place before you
begin.
Vacation-bound? Then it's
only natural that you'll be
thinking of clothes... what outfit
will be appropriate where, which
fabrics will pack well and look
smart on arrival.
The Canadian Cotton Council
suggests that a good rule to
follow in planning your vacation
wardrobe is "divide and
conquer." Whether you're
planning a long weekend or a
full-fledged vacation in the sun,
divide your wardrobe into sports
separates that multiply into a
dozen different combinations.
That way you'll conquer the old
question of what-to-take and
you'll ease 'the packing problem
too,

and skirts—then add a variety ol'
tops for spice. The same slim

Tips on entering or
leaving a freeway
Drivers! Freeway driving is
different and requires your full
attention— especially when
entering or leaving these high
speed traffic arteries.
As you enter a freeway on the
acceleration lane, always check
approaching freeway
traffic—then pick up speed so
that you merge smoothly at
approximately freeway driving
speed.
To leave a freeway, get into
the right lane as you approach
the turn off—signal you
intentions well in advance and
reduce speed as you enter the
turn off lane.
Remember, when entering or
leaving a freeway it is important
to do so smoothly.
Co—operation . reduces the
chances of freeway collisions.

SHOWING FOR ONE WEEK
BY I ITH ROULSTON
George Oull knows hew to win an argument.
George has been fighting to have musical instruction included in
the euniculum of Huron County high schools and last week he let
the eloquent voices of the 110-member cast, of his Pirates Of
Penzance speak for him,
Whether or not he can convince the school beard, he certainly
Managed to convince members Of the comninnity as the show played
to packed houses and standing ovations for four nights last week.
And the music was what it was all about, Individually few of the
cast had the type of voice usually thought of when an operetta is
mentioned, yet the blended voices of the cast gave music more
beautiful than any this area has heard in a long time, and is likely to
hear again for some time.
Despite being hampered by a mode of entertainment that was old
50 years ago, the entire cast Made an excellent show. They were
hampered by the logisitics of the whole production, how to get 110
people onto a small high school stage without having someone
trampled to death, but they managed to overcome it — even if they
couldn't take curtain calls because there were too many people to fit
behind the curtain at once,
One of the strong points of the show had to be the costuming and
Jane Stokes who was in charge of the operation deserves high praise
for her work, The pirates looked like pirates rather than, as so often
happens in amateur theatre, looking like trick or treaters off for a
Hallowe'en outing. Despite involving a huge cast, the costumes were
varied and always looked clean and fresh.
The sets are also to be praised, especially that of the ruined chapel
which showed a great deal of imagination and an escape from the
usual pitfall of lack of depth. That setting was three-dimensional and
made good use of the enlarged stage without cramping the style of
the performers in any way.
It's hard to give a review of the lead characters of the operetta
since there were two separate casts during the four-day run,
However, all deserve full credit for a good performance. Of the cast
of the Thursday night show, Mary Hearn deserves special praise for a
marvellous voice but also was more difficult to understand in many
of the musical numbers.
Music Director Lois Grasby and stage director Elizabeth Battey
deserve credit for molding the whole show irito a smooth and
beautiful production.

car blew up ee I mean literally.
Before X knew • what had
happened, I had hot water all
over the windshield and an
automobile that was puffing and
steaming like Casey!s engine.
Just reward Jor someone who
skipped a meeting to satisfy the
wants of. her family, I thoeght,
At the same time, my blessed
husband was carrying out a few
renovations at horne....juet
simple things like papering the
lining room and dining room,
refinishing an antique cupboard,
painting the kitchen, building a
sprideek. .and putting the
finishing touches to the family
room. Everything — and I mean
everything — in the lower part of
the house was torn up beyond
recognition. Even this week,' a
whole ten days later, our home
looks like a disaster area.
Simultaneously, I received
instructions in the mail to get
the minutes of the most recent
meeting of the church board
• into the mail before the mail
strike became a reality. That
means a minimum of one day's
hard labor. Where can I possibly
find time this week?
Then our four-year-old took
sick. You know, mothers. The
kind of ailment where he ran a
low-grade temperature, whined
and coughed continuously and
needed a bit of medication to
pull him back to normal.
Naturally he chose to be ill on a
Wednesday, when it is most
difficult to find a physician in
his office. I was lucky this time.
A gentle reminder came from
a friend....was I keeping in mind
my responsibility to organize the
class reunion scheduled for this
year? Why now, I asked myself?
When I took on the job it
seemed as though the date
would never come. Now here it
is and right at a time when I am
so busy....
The other night my husband
and I just dropped everything
and went to a movie. It was the
first time in ages that we had
done that. The movie wasn't bad
but it really wasn't that terrific
either.
My husband echoed my
sentiments xactly,
"At least it is quiet here.
Nobody is 'bothering us and We
can't hear the telephone. Let's
do this often."
