Letter to the
The Editor
What did you think of Ed'70?
This question has been posed to
me many times this week. The
answer has always been the
same. Wonderful.
I would like to thank all
those who made Education'70
possible and a reality. The
seminars were interesting, vital,
concerned with current
problems, and even lively and a
bit funny, Many students, seated
in window sills or on floors if
they had to, took part in lively
discussions with the seminar
leaders, fellow students, and
their regular teachers?
Here was a real chance to
broaden your views; voice your
opinions; learn to accept other
people's opinions and still
remain friends; here was a
chance to find out the things
you couldn't find out during
physics or English class. And was
it fun!
I'm exhausted from intensive
thinking, running around trying
to figure out where I'm
supposed to be, and from talking
but I wouldn't have missed it for
the world. It gave us all a chance
to become better acquainted
with ourselves and with people
we thought we already knew.
These seminars forced us to
think which gives some people a
hard time. They went
,down-town to "fool around" or
started little troubles which is
unfortunately thrown on the
shoulders of the organizers of
Ed.'70.
If these non-thinkers had
gone to see films, worked in
shops, played badminton,
volleyball or basketball, listened
to music or had eaten food in
THE EDITOR,
This week I have received a
number of phone calls asking me
to state a case for sidewalks in
Bayfield.
Those who claim that
sidewalks would spoil the "Old
World" charm of the village may
be surprised to know that the
lack of sidewalks in Europe
often signifies slum districts and
poor planning.
Over 2,000 years ago, on the
slopes of Mount Vesuvius, Greek
immigrants built the beautiful
city of Herculaneum complete
with sidewalks on both sides of
the streets, This was necessary to
protect the pedestrians from the
high speed chariots.
The Romans incorporated the
same civilized idea in many of
the cities which they built across
Europe.
The true "Old World" charm
will never come to Bayfield until
there are proper sidewalks
whether of Roman, European or
North American style.
Until then Bayfield
pedestrians will have to brave
the traffic or trip daintily over
the rocks, bottles, cans, candy
wrappers and cigarette packets
which litter the verges of Main
Street from June til September.
Maybe even Helen of Troy
might have launched a clean,
safe, even sidewalk, in the
interests of progress, in place of
one of those "thousand ships "

the coffee shop everyone would
be happy. In most seminars we
concluded that everything and
everybody has its bad' and good
points.
Well. Education'70 is the
same. On the whole, though, I'd
say it was a big success. Please
don't let the clamor of the
disinterested minority drown
out the praise of the
participating majority. Thank
you.
Tne editor,
On behalf of the Canadian
Red Cross I would like to thank
the women from the various
churches in town who canvassed
and helped at the Blood Donors'
Clinic.
I would also like to thank the
citizens of the town who
donated to the same. Without
your help both would have been
impossible.
To date $600.00 has been
raised.
Once again thanks.
MARIAN ANDREWS,
CHAIRMAN CLINTON
RED CROSS.
A STUDENT
Gord Levis led the squad,
winning the men's single crown
both at the Huron-Perth and.
W.O.S.S.A. tournaments in his
category. The Huron-Perth
tournament was held at C.:KB.
Clinton in April. There, the
Clinton team took a big lead
winning with 50 points, 15
ahead of second place Wingham
and 20 more than Listowel in
third. In fact, their 50 points
were one quarter of all the
points won by all of the nine
schools taking part. The C.H.S.S.
team brought home three of the
five individual championships.
Besides Levis' championship,
Diane Carter won the women's
single crown and Brenda
Kingswell and Ted Thompson
won the mixed doubles.
Other members of the team
were: Christine Hartley and Kay
Stevenson, women's doubles;
Mike Bezeau and Cameron Reid,
men's doubles; and Elaine
Vincent and Bob Cooper, spares.
