By taking precautions such as these there is less likelihood of aeei0ents, There will probably be a considerable increase in the acreage of corn grown for both grain and silage in Ontario during 1970. Mr. Archie McLaren, Crops Division, Ridgetown College of Agricultural Technology, says that planting usually begins by May 1 if the soil is fit, and that growers consider May 10 as the target date for having most of the crop planted. Research results at Ridgetown and other Ontario locations indicate that yields of grain begin to decrease when planting is delayed after May 10, and the maturity date in the fall is also delayed. Row widths of 38 inches or less have been found to be useful for good corn production and most farmers should continue to use this row width. The best number of plants per acre depends on the moisture and fertility available to the plants during their growing season. Based on past performance, a final stand of 18,000 to 20,000 plants per acre usually gives maximum yields. This means 'that plants are set 8 to 9 inches apart in 38-inch rows. Planters should be carefully checked before going into the fields, says Mr. McLaren, and farmers should be particularly careful that the right seed plates are available for the seed being used. Various seed lots may have been graded to different sizes, so the impOrtance of having seed plates with cells to fit the seeds must be emphasized. The planter should be set to drop about 10 per cent more seed than the plant stand desired. Seeds 7 to 9 inches apart in a 38-inch row would mean a seeding of 21,000 seeds per acre. On the assumption that 10 per cent of these will be lost, a farmer should expect to end up with about 19,000 plants. As a final point, Mr. McLaren says that corn seed, when purchased, is only treated against fungal diseases and the grower should add diazinon and lindane to protect the corn against worms and seed maggots. If corn rootworm protection is necessary, a band application of one of the recommended insecticides must be made. of Highways Downsview, Ontario; all Department of Highways offices throughout the province; the Department of Tourism and Information, 185 Bloor Street East, Toronto 5, Ontario; the Department's Tourist Reception Centres at border crossing points in Southern Ontario, and Service Centres on Highways 401 (the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) and 400. se power properly save operating costs -On'arie.farinera now have some formal protection in the quality of drain tile and plastic tubing they will buy this year, says Professor Ross School of Agricultural Engineering, University of Guelph, A series of three specifications were formally recognized at the Annual Meeting of the Ontario Parte, Drainage Association, which created inieinuirn, voluntary standards to be used in the industry, says Professor Irwin. The standards were designed by three committees stablished a year ago by the Association,. and their commendations were accepted n a tentative basis, which it is oped will be made permanent n the future, These standards ave come about through a onsensus of manufacturers in he industry, and are patterned ter those- of the 'American ociety for Testing Materials, ut have been modified slightly or conditions found in Ontario. Professor Irwin notes that lay drain tile may now be pecified in three qualities. tandard quality drain tile, sually used for farm drainage, ust have an average minimum rushing strength of 800 pounds er lineal foot. The crushing trength for extra-quality drain Ile is 1,100 pounds, and for eavy-duty tile is 1,400 pounds er lineal foot. Standard quality concrete drain tile must have a crushing strength of 900 pounds per lineal foot. Extra-quality concrete drain tile must have a crushing strength of .1,100 pounds per lineal foot. A special-quality concrete drain tile is manufactured from special cement to withstand acid or sulfate soils. It should also be remembered that drain tile must not be less than 12 inches in length and, for sizes over 12 inches, the length must not be less than the diameter, says Professor Irwin. Drain tile must be free from cracks, checks, or chips extending into the body of the tile which would decrease the strength. They should be smooth on the inside, be approximately circular and straight, and have smooth butt ends. Drain tile should give a clear ring when held free of the ground and tapped with a light metal object. Extra-quality drain tile is usually used in deep, wide trenches. A specification for plastic drainage tubing has been accepted; however, because of the properties of the material, the tests for this product cannot be directly compared with those used fin. clay and concrete drain tile. It is hoped that engineers will now use these standards for the specification of materials to be used in all drainage work. Copies of a synopsis of these standards may be obtained from the Ontario Farm Drainage Association, P.O. Box 459, Parkhill. Crop report Warm weather and adequate soil moisture conditions occurred through Huron County Itit-Weer-The seedinref spiting' cereals progressed rapidly and a few fields of early seeded bailey have emerged. Ploughing, discing, and spreading fertilizer on corn land began; last week. Established hay fields and new seedlings are beginning to show signs of growth. Fall wheat is beginning to grow vigorously. Often simple Precautiona taken at the right time can save lives and ,prevent accidents, inter on. This is certainly the case with pesticides, which, should be. Stored correctly at all times. Professor C., 0. Kelly, Department of Botany, Ontario Agricultural, College, University of Guelph, Pays the ideal, way to store pesticides is to keep them in their original containers, This way the user knows for certain what the material is and has the full instructions for 14 use on the label. If another container has to be Used to store a pesticide, it should be labelled clearly, and the original label should be saved for the directions. A farmer can often make savings in power requirements, fuel Costs, and other operating costs by buying larger equipment and operating it at a lower speed. Professor H, A. Hughes, School of Agricultural Engineering, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph, gives the following figures as an example: A farmer has a choice of using two different plows: a 5-16 (a plow with 5 bottoms, each 16 inches wide) or a 4.16. Operating the first plow at 3 mph and the second at 3.75 mph will mean that each plow will do an acre in thirty minutes. But which one requires more power to pull it? Professor Hughes says that in an average soil the 5-16 plow will need a force of 6,400 lbs. to move at 3 mph. The smaller plow, moving at 3.75 mph, will need 5,600 lbs, force. The force required to pull a machine will increase with the speed the machine is going. Research has now developed equations to estimate a pull at a given speed in a particular soil. Because force and speed estimates are available, a farmer can calculate the horsepower needed to pull each plow, says Professor Hughes, or the horsepower for hny tillage tool if the estimates „are available, The calculation is ''made by multiplying the pull force by the speed in miles per hour. The result is then divided by 375. In the above case, therefore, the 5.16 plow figure is reached by multiplying 6,400 by 3, and dividing by 375. The result: 51 hp. A similar calculation shows the smaller plow needs 56 hp. Using the 5-16 plow would mean an average saving of 5 hp to pull the plow. A smaller tractor could be used and less fuel. per acre would be needed to run the larger plow at a lower speed and still have it The Npvv4-fl,ppprcl, Thprgioy,.May 7, 1$7Q 7A. STOCKER FEEDER .
