The basement can be reached from the side en- trance without going through any in- tervening room. There is space in the basement for storage, laundry and furnace room. The front door should face north, The floor area is 1,245 square feet; the exterior dimensions are 44 feet by 28 feet four inches. Working draw- ings of this house, known as Design 812, are available at minimum cost from Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Florist creating arrangement called 'The Big Hug' for Mother's Day ••••iiir • Jerry Harris, conservation officer for the department at Inverhurc)n, a provincial park near Douglas Point, said, "This is the first major re.stocking project for Lake Huron, We hope to build a good flail population to replace lake trout. The bouglas,Point site proved to be an added bones for the Department of Lands and Forest. For the past several days they have been making aerial Surveys in an attempt to find Open waters along the Lake Huron shoreline that WAS easily accessible by road. The Douglas Point Station uses lake water in its cooling system, and the warmer water from the 'station keeps the mouth of the outflow channel free of ice all Winter. "8plake Will have a better survival Chance against eels -Sian they grow faster than lake trout and spawn hi three years as agairiSt six years for lake trout. We placed 20,000 of them last spring in Georgian Bay and by fall fishermen were catching fish up to a pound and a half. The splake have proven at the hatchery they will reproduce naturally and those now placed in the lake are second or third generation of the cross between speckled and lake trout, The department also is launching a program against lamprey eels, which swim up rivers to spaWh, The eggs and the young, when hatched, lie dormant in river mud for several years. It is here researchers hope to eradicate thetn. Mr. Harris said the splake are marked for identification before being placed in Lake Huron, as were those placed last year ih Georgian 135y, This will enable them to be tracked and a record kept of their Movement, Ile Said splake ate very tasty and a good game fish for sportinen and commercial fishermen, ••• We don't fool around BY A. R. BUCKLEY Every year, there are ,hundreds of thousands of coniferous evergreens sold in Canada to home owners who are landscaping their property or renovating their plantinga. Because these plants grow rather slowly, the nurseryman must keep them for many years before they are large enough to sell, a factor that makes them very expensive. They are very valuable plants for use in garden design tor they give a sense of permanency to home plantings and provide much wanted contrast to the deciduous trees and shrubs. Coniferous evergreens are best treated as shapes when considering them for ordinary garden use. We speak of them as broad pyramids, narrow pyramids, globes, cones, spreading and vase or urn-shaped types. For most of Canada the following shapes are most suitable among those most generally available. Broad pyramidal types are those usually placed at the corners of the home or to accent the entrance to the driveway. The forms most acceptable are the blue-green burk's Juniper (Juniperus virginiana ‘Burkii), the deep green Canaert's juniper (Juniperus virginiana `Canaertin, the 'silvery-blue Hill juniper (Juniperus virginiana the Springbank juniper (Juniperus scopulorum `Springbank') and the very, fat and opulent, dark green Mountbatten juniper (Juniperus chinensis `Mountbatten'), A more unusual but extremely beautiful silver broad pyramidal type is the boulevard false. cypress (Chamaecy paris pisifera `Squarrosa Cyano-viridis'), Most of these plants will grow from 15 to 20 feet high if they are left unpruned and from six to eight feet wide. They will take pruning verf Well, so if they. get too tall their leading shoots':: an be cut back in early June or ate August. Smaller forms are the Spartan juniper (Juniperus hinensis 'Spartan') with silvery oliage and the Spiny Greek 'uniper (Juniperus chinensis Pyramidalis') with prickly ey-green foliage. The globe types or the all-shaped evergreens are quite ireful for planting near .ntrances or steps as accent plants. There are many kinds of arborvitae for this purpose, the Best being the globe arborvitae Thuja occidentalis `Globose') light blue foliage; the Andorra juniper (Jernperos horizontalis %mom% that turns to bronze or purphsh-bronze in the fell, , the Bar Harbor juniper (Jae iperus liorizontalia `Olauce), with silvery foliage ;and the Wapiti juniper, a 'vigorous growing, soil binding, cultiyar with dark green foliage. To conclude these notes, I would urge you to bear in mind ;that all evergreens, particularly 'those growing near the house, will need ample water at all :t imes. During September, October and even November, water the plants well so that they will go into the winter :quite moist. tips on watering 'house plants Frequency of watering should be based upon keeping the soil uniformly moist. This is relatively easy to accomplish if the soil drainage is perfect because it is then difficult to overwater. In pot culture of plants, many things can be done to provide good drainage and a well oxygenated soil, so essential for plant growth. First there must be a hole in the bottom of the pot or container. A plant in a pot which does not allow excess water to escape must be watered on a trial and error basis, usually less frequently than it needs, to avoid over-watering. This method might result in the decline and finally the death of the plant, The drain hole in the pot can be kept open by placing a broken piece of pot over the hole, concave side downward, and with smaller pieces of pot, stones, or gravel on top. Specially designed plastic pot drains are also available for the purpose. Leaves give you some good Indications. Plants with large, thin, soft leaves use more water than those with hard, waxy leaves. Sansevieras, for instance, can go for long periods without water, but coleus plants wilt very quickly. Check your plants every morning and do not allow them to wilt, Don't go to an extreme in watering to prevent wilting. Finally, when you do water, give your plant a thorough soaking. A little water every day is not good. Water well and let the plant dry out before you soak it again. Who isn't at a loss for words on Mother's Day? Well, perhaps mother herself. It's the one day of the year when there's no ignoring the fact that every child has a debt too great to repay and a heartful of sentiment too deep to communicate in mere words. Although the formal observance of Mother's Day was started less than 60 years ago, the feeling it intends to convey is as old as motherhood itself. Anna M. Jarvis originated the celebration in 1907 to pay respect to her own mother. The world has since followed suit and on the second Sunday in May children young and old seek to communicate filial love in its purest form. Our debt to Miss Jarvis is twofold. Not only did she set aside the day for honoring mothers, she also set the standard of expression that best reflects the sentiments that have to be expressed. The flowers she chose, the carnation, has endured as a Mother's Day favorite to tell in humble grace and beauty the measure of appreciation for a lifetime of devotion. Now 'the tradition of presenting flowers to mother has . become as necessary as turkey for thanksgiving. As a salute to this custom, traditional carnations will be a prominent feature of a special Mother's Day arrangement called_ "The Big Hug Bouquet" which will be created by FTD florists throughout Canada as a gift for mothers everywhere. Trout are making a comeback in Lake Huron Fifty thousand sleek young splake, a hybrid of speckled and lake trout, have been introduced into the lake in a major re-stocking operation by the 'research branch of the Department of Lands and Porests. Another 50,000 will be introduced later this spring. The yearlings, three to seven inches long, with some to 10 inches, were recently put into Lake Huron at the outflow chareftel of the Douglas Point Nuclear Power 8tation between Kincardine and Port Elgin. The splake are the'result of a seven-year study and were raised at the Ohatsworth hatchery near Owen. Sound, 'They will replace the once4lourishing lake trout popular with commercial and game fishermen but missing for 10 years of More because of deelenatioe by lamprey MS,- and the Woodward, Little Gem and Little Champion cultivars. The most popular plant though for this use is the dwarf mugho pine (Pinus mugo var. mugo) that can be kept in perfect shape by cutting the newly developed candles in half in late May or June. ,Some globe-shaped- yevvs are sold and can be maintained as globes if' clipped each year; these are invaluable for planting in the shade. The vase or urn shaped types ;Of evergreens' 'are -used primarily to add height to otherwise flat plantings such as might be obtained by using spreading junipers. The most perfect vase shapes are produced by the Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) and hybrid yew (Taxus x media). The best form of the hybrid yew is Brown's yew (Taxus x media 'Brownir). These plants are necessary for the north or shady side of the house and the extra cost entailed is a justifiable expense, Typical Vase-shaped junipers are the Blaauw juniper (Juniperus chinensis `Blaauw'), a silvery, very rugged type that will stand the worst of winters and will not easily break down with snow, and the Meyor juniper (Juniperus squamata %eyed') with pinkish blue needles on very compact plants. There are two types of spreading evergreens for home planting, the large bushy type and the low spreading type. Of the former, the Pfitzer juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Pfitzeriana) is the most popular. There are two forms, the common Pfitzer juniper and the golden Pfitzer juniper, both growing to the heights of three to four feet with spreads of four feet. There are also upright cultivars of the same type that provide a useful background to the lower kinds. All Pfitzer type junipers will grow fairly well in the shade. The Hetz juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Hetzi') with its silvery-blue foliage provides contrast and is very vigorous. The Gray Owl juniper (Juniperus virginiana 'Grey 'Owl') is quite similar but with a greater preponderance of 'Silvery-blue waxy berries., Lower spreading types that cling more to the soil and are useful for ground covers are usually found in cultivars of the Savin juniper (Juniperus.sabina) and the creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis). In the Savin juniper group are the 'showy, deep, green Tamarix juniper, an extremely graceful form with pendulous" tips toile ,spreading branches that give a cascading effect; Arcadia, that hugs closely to the ground and has fresh green 'foliage; Hicksii with a spreading habit and yet upright branches, and the Ramlosa juniper, a cultivar that was selected from forms obtained from Sweden and grown at the Plant Research Institute for many years, •Of the prostrate junipers belonging to the creeping juniper group, the most satisfactory are the Waukegan juniper (Juniperus horizontalis `DouglasiP), with On Sunday, May 10, one might also take time to recall some famous mothers — Whistler's, Mama Dionne, Mama Gabor, and even two of TV's loveable clowns, Lucille Ball and Phyllis Diller — to name a few. They've made some unforgettable headlines, but your mother reached your heart in a special way -you'll long remember without ever seeing it in the newsreels. Certainly, your own first lady deserves a day of her own — one blooming with love and fragrant with good wishes. Lake Huron being stocked with young trout
