George was -horn slightly prematurely but seems to have made up for that and is developing well. He is alert and interested in everything going on. He isn't crawling yet but he rolls over and gets up on hands and knees, almost ready to take off. He can say the names of ,the people in his foster family. George is fond of music, especially the theme song of his favorite program, Bob Barker. He starts to rock back and forth as soon as he hears it. He loves children and household pets and makes friends quickly with adults. This baby needs loving parents Who will welcome a splendid, appealing little boy without concern that informa- tion on his background is limited. The Federal Department of Health reported the incidence was almost five times greater than in the corresponding period of 1969, "It would appear that children are simply not getting their vaccinations as they should," he said. "It is difficult to understand why parents are not having their children iMilitiniZed when vaccine is available," It is estimated that more than 1,00 0,00 0 children have already been vaccinated in Canada with the one-shot vaccine, but an estimated 1,000,000 others are still unvaccinated , and susceptible. Medical authorities point out that many parents are unaware of the possible harmful effects of common, red, 10-day measles (rubeola). Encephalitis or mental retardation can result. Dr, C. S. Anglin, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Toronto and associate physician at the Hospital for Sick Children was recently quoted as saying that measles vaccine is one of the safest and most effective vaccines available. The church is not battering at the gates of government for special favours when it proposes that the government distinguish Sunday from other days, says the Lord's Day Alliance in its annual report just released. "It's • proposal that government distinguish Sunday from other days is based upon humanitarian considerations," says the Rev. A. S. McGrath, General Secretary. On the controversial subject of Sunday store openings, the Alliance notes that small food stores have been repeatedly taken to court and fined. "Nevertheless," the report says, "they have persisted in their unlawful activity to the point where police not infrequently have developed a feeling of frustration and have seldom prosecuted. Fines have been small and ineffective, provincial at t or neys-general...have not always been interested and conditions have accordingly been getting out of hand and Well-nigh impossible to correct." On the positive side, the Alliance reports action of an ad hoc committee composed of officials in food store chains, labour unions, trade and consumer organizations and churches who presented a resolution to the Premier and Attorney-General of Ontario in August last year. The committee affirmed "that Sunday business would deprive many workers of rest and freedom from work on the particular day of the week when the majority of people are customarily at leisure; would take working fathers and working mothers away from home on the common rest-day and would deprive children of parental company and supervision. It would add to the operating costs of business, and this would inevitably lead to further increase in the cost of living." Sports and entertainment The Alliance affirms that, for those who attach little or no importance to religion, the next best use of Sunday is undoubtedly that of rest and recreation, best taken in family association. While those who advocate Sunday sport, amusement, or some form of cultural activity have been enjoying a measure of success, the Alliance warns that they should not be complacent. "Business and industry look with greedy eyes upon Sunday and there ever seem to be some who figure the competitive advantage they might seize, and profits they might acquire by operating on Sunday." In guarding , against a completely open Sunday, the promoters of sport and entertainment, "may yet be surprised to find that the Lord's Day Alliance is their best ally," the report states. Trucking The latest threat to Sunday leisure is the effort of some trucking companies to gain permission to operate on. Sundays. Towards the end of 1969, the Canadian Transport Commission granted this privilege to two companies. One runs trucks with perishable, refrigerated goods through the Maritime Provinces to Quebec and Ontario, and the other through the U.S. into Montreal and Toronto. When scheduled to arrive on Saturday the latter may continue to their destination on Sunday if delay has been caused by "such misadventure as flat tire, mechanical defect or road accident." Others have since been asking permission to engage in general, trucking on Sundays. The Alliance points out that Sunday trucking is not only prohibited by the Lord's Day Act but that it has been banned by provincial highways departments. Their obvious reason has been that traffic problems would be greatly increased and the number of accidents multiplied with Sunday commercial traffic when thousands are driving for pleasure. cARNAVARON's CASTLE by. dean Francis 'Webb (New. 'York, Meredith Press, 1999; 314 pages) - This modern suspense novel, set within the walls of an old renovated castle, contains, all the swashbuckling romance of an early Errol Flynn movie. Here is a familiar plot presented with an unusual twist - gallant 16th century derring-do. Jean Francis Webb, professional writer of novels and articles since 1933, has concentrated his most recent books on mystery and intrigue.. A companion to Carnavaron's Castle is The Craigshaw Curse, another contemporary gothic novel centred near an ancient homestead in Florida. Gull Island, home of Tintagel (the Carnavaron castle), is a: small, obscure island off the coast of Maine. Surrounding jagged rocks and tempestuous seas discourage visits from strangers. However, Jennifer Stratten, a young writer, has been granted an exclusive interview with Miranda Carnavaron, recluse and mistress of Tintagel. Miranda is the widow of the famed matinee idol, Charles Carnavaron, and the opportunity to talk with her is too rare to ignore. Many surprises await Jenny at the chateau, including the presence of Kate Drummond, one-time lover of the late Charles, and the mysterious unannounced arrival of Heath Carney, handsome young college professor. Jenny finds herself involved in a murder plot and unsuspectingly places her ' own life in danger trying to protect the intended victim. t Webb, employing the unique technique of illusion, skillfully compares the inside of the castle with the make-believe life of its creator. The presence of Charles Carnavaron, dead 25 years, is strongly felt, especially among his waxed likenesses in the underground museum and shrine. Danger and romance accompany the reader on every page, and the climax will delight " all fans of mystery and suspense. This. book is a new ,addittop„to „, your public library. WRITING FOR.
