Boating blunders for those who won't listen 17) Don't pay any attention to that underwater obstruction marker the Corps of Engineers put out. What do they know. 18) Why sit in the seats and get them all messed up? There are a lot of other places you can sit in a boat - - like the transom, the gunwales, the back of the seats or, best of all, the bow. 19) Taking your gas tank out of the boat to fill it is a waste of time. Leave it in the boat. So you spill a little gas in the bilges. It'll dry up eventually. Just- remember not to light a match. 20) It wasn't right for that judge to compare you to the "creature from the black lagoon". .Th ose swimmers, should have seen your drag boat coming. With a good lawyer and luck you can get the Supreme Court to reverse that manslaughter rap. RAY'S SHOE REPAIR has recently purchased a large stock of high-cut work boots, with or without steel toes. These and other questions have fascinated fishermen since primitive man first wet.a line, say• the fishing experts at Mercury outboards. The answers to some of the angler's usual questions are purely academie, while others give clues to successful fishing. Here are a few facts on which most scientists agree; Can a fish feel pain when he's hooked? To some extent, but the sensation of pain is probably not as keen as it is in mammals. It's unlikely that a hooked fish would pull so hard on a fishing line if such action greatly increased its pain. Can a fish make sounds? Some make a grunting noise by forcing air from the air bladder through their mouths. Others gnash their teeth, Fishermen in Malaya put their heads in the water and can distinguish the direction and types of fish making underwater sounds (or so they.claim). How do fish manage to support themselves at various depths so effortlessly? Submerged, fish weigh little or nothing, because the total volume of water they occupy weighs about the same as they do. Bottom dwelling species are heavier than water, How well does a fish see? Most biologists agree that fish see clearly at close •range but that their distant view is limited. Fish can tell one color from another. And they have preferences. Bass, for instance, seem to favor red or yellow lures, while northern pike often show a preference for the red and white combinations. Are fish smart or stupid? Ask any fisherman, 482-6633 CLINTON Distributor for all Shell Oil ProdUcts estions .on fish Every year about this time various authorities begin urging safe boating practices on the public: Well intentioned and responsible boaters usually listen to the advice and try to follow it. But what about the bad intentioned and irresponsible? Who speaks to them? Until now, no one. At least that's the opinion of the people at Mercury outboards. So, to remedy that situation they have devised a list of 20 pieces of bad advice for that small group of boaters who have been ignoring good advice all these years. Here, are 20 "tried and true" ideas for making you the biggest menace on the water this summer (if that's your ambition): l'.) Why should you bother to learn the Rules of the Road? You've been driving a boat for more than a year and you've only had those two or three little head-on collisions. 2) That stuff about sharp turns at high, speeds causing boats to capsize is a lot of bunk. The Coast Guard likes to exaggerate. 3) Stop worrying about overloading. Your boat should hold eleven adults and a Great Dane with no trouble. After all, it's a dinghy. 4) My brother water skis at night a lot and says it's a real bag. Ask him. He's standing right over there - - the guy with his leg in a cast ... 5) Your 12-footer is a sailboat, right? He's a powerboat, right? So you have the right-of-way. Don't let an aircraft carrier intimidate you. 6) Go ahead and stand up in that canoe. How can you be expected to cast sitting down? 7) Boat cushions are for little old ladies. 8) Don't turn off a collision course until the other guy does. You can't let people push you around. 9) Sure, you could get your trailer brake lights fixed, but that would take all the adventure out of night driving. 10) Your kids don't have to wear life jackets. If they fall overboard, they can grab onto a piece of driftwood. 1 1 ) You probably remembered to put in the drain plug before you launched. That must be rain water in the bilge. 12) One-hundred horsepower isn't too much power for your 12-footer. That dealer was just trying to scare you into buying an expensive boat. 13) You don't have to get out of the way of that barge captain! Let him get out of the way. ICS not his river. 14) Next time you see Ii water skier being towed behind another boat, drive your boat right up behind him. It's a real kick to see the look of terror on his face when he looks back at you. 15) There may be a lot of boats around the launch area. Don't let that stop you. Come in full bore. Show'em you're a tiger. 16) If you see a guy sitting in a fishing boat, wash him down. He'll enjoy the motion of his rocking boat. ATTENTION FARMERS Order Early And Make Big Savings Now !
