I Rambling with Luc-
BY 1..liCY WOPOs
Spring is here! It came in officially on Friday evening, March 20.
On Sunday March. 22, Mrs, carson Fawcett, Varna, telephoned to
td1 Lucy that a pair of Mourning Doves were at her place, One was
r9p9rted in. Bayfield two or three weeks earlier.
Carl said on Sunday that he had heard their mournful notes. And
that is one sure sign of warmer weather.
Mrs, .lim Hutchings has been hearing robins chirp for a couple of
weeks, but they kept themselves hidden from view in evergreens
except one which she sighted on the way to Clinton.
But on Mareh 25, two or three showed themselves around "The
Hut" enjoying the brief spell of sunny warm weather. Harold Bell
reported a kildeer on March 24 and the previous day while driving
home from Goderich Carl ,saw a tree lined with blackbirds. And of
course the crows have been announcing spring for some time.
But for the worst blizzard of the winter in this area on March 26,
they must have all sought sheltered spots.
At any rate spring cleaning in the garden at "The Hut" got a good
start when friends helped. Carl burn up the unsightly brush heap on
the corner lot.
The black squirrels have kept Lucy and Carl amused jumping to
the swinging suet feeder from the small rose arbour, and chasing
each •other around the tree trunks on Bayfield Terrace. The maple
buds are hardly swollen large enough yet for the black squirrels'
favorite spying salad.
Lucy's last sight of Fluffy the cat was of her sitting up on the
rose arch, a strong west wind blowing her long silky hair back. She
thought that the cat was watching for birds, but it could be she had
a fever. Carl noticed that she was very quiet one day when she came
to the back door for her food. Then she disappeared and could not
be found. A couple of weeks later, Carl moved a box in the barn and
found her. He came in and told Lucy that he had attended a burial.
The spritely, charming Angora cat had worked her way into both
Carl's and Lucy's affections.
Even Sandi the cat seemed to mope when she didn't join him at
the kitchen door, And while at first he was jealous and tried to drive
her off, he came to accept her as belonging here and together they
lay in a shelter spot in the sun by the south wall, or sat on the
sunporch window in the sun. And hadn't he suddenly found that he
could fight and sustained injuries to his legs in driving off all the
other Tom cats venturing to pay Fluffy court?
Car! and Lucy hope that Sandi will not desert them again this
spring.• The voles and moles appear to have been very active, judging
by their tunnels under the snow. But Sandi may not consider the
punting good enough. Also the raccoons have been in the barn and
one walked calmly through the garden past the sunporch one night
about sunset. And Sandi and those 'coons do not agree.
The first bouquet of snowdrops centred with a purple crocus in a
blue hand-blown glass cream pitcher wilted and the storm covered
possible replacements up again the end of last week, But as soon as
the sun shines again there'll be more 'firsts' from the garden for
Lucy.
