A new decade - a new Spoytsmen's Show. This is the theme of this year's Canadian National Sportsmen's Show, opening at the Coliseum, Exhibition Park, Toronto, on March 13. The 23rd Annual Canadian National Sportsmen's Show will be open to the public until March 22. Hundreds of thousands of visitors to the show will again see everything that is new and different for life in the great outdoors - but - there will also be special exhibits highlighting what is to come in the Seventies. The leading organization in Canada, in the field of conservation of Canada's natural resources, the Sportsmen's Show has commissioned the design and construction of "Survival '70," a walk-through exhibit dealing with this pressing situation. "Survival '70" will be a major conservation display, dramatizing man's impact on our environment today. Developed by the Conservation Council of Ontario in co-operation with other major associations with displays in the conservation section of the Sportsmen's Show, "Survival '70" will incorporate a pollution maze in which visitors will experience a lively presentation on pollution of our air, land and •water. Emerging from the maze, other aspects of the environmental crisis are displayed: population, ecological balances, the future of our parks and the impact of individual action. Many of the displays will give visitors a chance to participate by asking questions, or starting a process. Clive E. Goodwin, executive director of the Conservation Council and co-ordinator of the project, also announced that a small theatre with a short slide presentation will further emphasize the opportunities open to Canadians to improve their environment. Possible solutions and ideas will be presented in the display, showing how corrective action can be taken; finally, visitors will be offered issues on which they can take action, 'Two programs produced by' the Ontario Department of Edue,ation's educational television branch have won Ohio State awards for the second consecutive year. The award winners are Richard II-How to Kill a King and Symmetry. Richard H, a color production, is one of a series of Shakespearean plays produced for secondary school students. It won in the Performing Arts and Humanities Division, Symmetry, in black and white, presents everyday examples of different types of symmetry as a basis of discussions for secondary students. It won recognition in the Natural and Physical Science division. The Awards, sponsored by the Ohio State University, are the oldest competition in the broadcasting field. They are given for meritorious achievement, educational information and public affairs broadcasting. The top commercial and educational networks in Canada and the United States I competed, The awards were presented today. The citation for Richard II states: "For artistic and cogent presentation of an historical event to articulate contrasting pAliticaL views and for *mplary use, et„teleyisiort tot The Sportsmen's Show Dog Show has moved into newt quarters. H. V. P. Lewis, vice president of the Canadian National Sportsmen's Show and Chairman of the Dog Show Committee, announced the move, made necessary by the tremendous growth of the event, to the Queen Elizabeth Building. The biggest dog show . in Canada requires bigger, better and more suitable quarters, according to Mr. Lewis. "Because entries reached a record high of 4,312 dogs in 1969, and because of the growing number of dogs being entered for competition, we had from our house. A mere stone's throw! ETV won in two of the four categories entered. Last Year's winners were Histoire du Canada-Vers la Conque, and Biology-Enzymes and Digestion. This year ETV will broadcast 809 programs for students from kindergarten to Grade 13. The programs are presently carried over a network of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and This fan, when ETV's new UHF Channel 19 begins operations, the branch will broadcast about nine hours a day with programs for pre-school age children, adult home viewers and in-school audiences, Two and a half million dollars have to date been raised by the Canadian National Sportsmen's Show by ' operating the Sportsmen's Show and the Toronto International Boat Show. Since conservation is the organization's raison d'etre, the Mini, midi, maxi - fashions will steal the spotlight Tuesday evening at the 1970 Farm Show. The four-day shoW starts ..Tapsday, „March.3.,,,,and runs to Friday, March 6, with the doors opening at 10:30 a.m. Mini, midi, maxi - clothes and fashions blended with a generous mix of furs, shoes and hats will be on, parade at the show. Meg Daniels, the fashion show co-ordinator, promises exciting and new fashion looks for 1970. Also in the area of beauty, 15 attractive young ladies will contest the 1970 Farm Show Princess title, with the lucky gal being crowned on Tuesday evening. Over 120 exhibitors will occupy 130,000 sq. ft. of floor space, bringing together a kaleidoscope of modern farm equipment and machinery, as well as hundreds of up-to-date goods and products for the farm housewife. A special theatre has been planned for the second floor and will seat an additional 200 people. The theatre programs include new educational exhibits featuring timely topics such as Proprionic Acid in Storage, Air Photography in Detection of Diseases in Crops, the Use of The 23rd annual ,Canadian. National .Sportsmen's Show be held at the .QNg Toronto, March. 1.3-22, Keeping pace with the increasing demand for improved camping .equipment, this section has expanded into the area Previously occupied by the Sportsmen's Show Dog Show, now held in the Queen Elizabeth Building. Motor homes, travel And camping trailers, equipment suitable for hack-packing into the more secluded parts of Canada's outdoors, equipment to make camping easier for the leHy of the house and many varied items will be on show. New cottages, new swimming pools, new fishing tackle, new guns, new clothes for outdoor life - everything new for the new decOe will be exhibited. Once again, the Toronto Hunters and Anglers will create a special wildernesa survival exhibit which, this year, will feature a rock shelter, a smoke house - where smoked moose meat' will be served - an open pit for frying fish which will also be available for tasting - and demonstrations of weaving emergency mattresses. The Retriever Dog Trials, favorites which young and old, will return to the arena. The only indoor trials of this kind in the world will be held daily at 7 p.m. Over 50 of North America's leading retrievers will compete for the Gold Whistle Award. money has been distributed to groups, organizations, individuals and associations engaged in the field of research and development of Canada's natural resources. Proceeds from this year's shows will increase this impressive total. Pesticides, Insecticides and Herbicides and Various Control Measures, and the Dutch Clock System for auctioning tobacco will be featured. With over 23,000 people attending the show last year and the increase in activities, a special information booth has been designed and will be set up to direct the Farm Show visitors to their particular area of interest. Another new attraction for the sh9w will be the opening of the Top of the Fair dining lounge for buffet and regular meals. This is located on the third floor of the grandstand. On Wednesday, March 4 at 1:30 p.m. an all-grade Ontario swine sale will be held at the Western Fairgrounds. The sale will include top boars, bred sows and open gilts of five different breeds: Yorkshire, Hampshire, Landrace, Lacombe and Duroc, * If you're a driver between the ages of 20 and 40 - watch out! The Ontario Safety League and the Canadian railways say most accidents at railway level crossings involve drivers between the ages of 20 and 40. If fishing is your thing, you will have a chance to prove how good you are, by participating in the Trout Fishing Derby - another First for the Sportsmen's Show. The' lucky fishermen will keep their catch, frozen on the spot for easier transportation, and unlimited in number - just pay 50c and see how many trout you can catch in a few minutes, The Canadian Professional Golf Association will return with its popular exhibit, where golfers can swing the club, watch themselves on instant play-back television, and have professionals give useful hints , for improvement of style. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Sportsmen's Show will be the International Motor Show - bigger than ever this year. Cars from Canada, the United States, Japan and Europe will move into the Coliseum, and everything from high-priced European luxury sedans to fast, sophisticated sports model will be on view. Fashion shows, demonstrations of sports, archery and thousands of exhibits, presented by more than 300 exhibitors will cover more than ten acres of space in the Coliseum. All this, and much more, will make the 1970 Sportsmen's Show the highlight of March in Toronto.
