"Milk In a bag", is big
A major battle 'is shaping up
for the Canadian Milk gackaging
market, with the only store
winner being the polyethylene
industry, John Fennell says in
The Financial Post.
The loser — at least as far as
costs are concerned — the
consumer. The fight is taking
place between returnable
polyethylene jugs and disposable
polyethylene film pouches, in
the big three-quart market.
'(Sales of milk in three-quart
packages account for nearly 50%
of annual Canadian retail sales of
1,300 million gallons of fluid
milk.) The jug is giving way to
the bag. The new product has
come on strongly in recent
months; now accounts for 10%
of three-quarter container sales.

Statistics are against the male

involved in railway level crossing
accidents are driven by males.
The Ontario Safety League and
the Canadian railways warn that
winter is the most dangerous
time for level crossing accidents.

Once yon're enticed by this
new decorating idea, remember
these tips from the Canadian
Paint Manufacturers Association,
Prepare the surface properly. If
you are re-painting, remove dirt,
grease and oil, then sand lightly
to dull the gloss and improve
adhesion between the old and
new paint.
Even factory-sanded,
unfinished screens Should be
sanded lightly before the enamel
undercoat is applied. Be sure
that there , are no stray
fingermarks or dirt on the
surface of the wood before you
apply the undercoat. If a second
application of undercoat is
necessary, sand lightly between
coats.
Before you begin to paint,
take a few minutes to assemble
your equipment, and read the
manufacturer's directions on the
label. Discuss any questions with
your local paint dealer, He'll
probably recommend high or
semi-gloss enamel as the most
effective finish. .
The most important step to a
bright new enamel finish is
proper application. Load the
Don't stare at the .March 7
eclipse of the sun warns the
Optometrical Association of
Ontario. "Looking fixedly at the
sun for any length of time can
cause serious damage to your
eyes" says Dr. Douglas
Penwarden, Association
President.
"And," he adds, "looking at
it through sun-glasses, smoked
glass or similar devices only
serves to increase the danger
since they make it easier to stare
but do not filter out the
infra-red rays which do the
damage."
"Above - all, never • 'use
binoculars, telescopes or any
other magnifying device to view
an eclipse. They will not only
magnify the spectacle; they will
also increase the dangers of
permanent damage."
When you stare at the sun its
infra-red rays are focused by the
eye itself onto 'the highly
sensitive centre portion of the
retina in much the same way and

Once the screens have dried,
you can really start your
imagination working. Try it as a
backdrop for a "rogues gallery"
of favorite family photos, or use
it as the background for a
.collection of prints hung with
picture-hanger adhesive stickers.
"Fancy up" a plain screen
with homemade cardboard
stencils. Simple geometric
designs in bright artist's oil
paints are extremely effective.
Another idea: paint each side or
panel a different color for a
bright cOntemporary look.
Folding screens needn't
always be room-dividers.
Painted, stained or antiqued, a
screen may be used as a clever
foil behind a grouping of chairs
or as a window-screen to assure
privacy from the street.
Strategically placed in a
bedroom or bathroom,
additional privacy can be
obtained for dressing or
make-up. Hide unsightly features
of a room, such as old-fashioned
heaters when not in use.
You'll find that with today's
paint products, decorating your
house is mainly a matter of
imagination!
with much the same effect as
when a magnifying glass is used,
to start a fire.
Probably the best way to
watch an eclipse; and certainly
the safest, is to view it on your
T.V. screen as network cameras
'record it from vantage points
across the continent.
If in spite of all warnings, you
insist on looking directly at the
eclipse there is one precaution
only that we can recommend i.e.
a piece of film which has been
fully exposed to light in its
undeveloped state.
This film should be used to,,
cover fully 'both eyes while the
viewer watches the eclipse. If kept
constantly between the eyes and
the sun, it will absorb or filter
out most of the damaging
infra-red rays.
"We still advise T.V. viewing
as the best known method of
watching an eclipse with
complete safety" concludes Dr.
Penwarden.
