Letter
The following letter was
received recently by Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Sturgeon from Laurie
Johns a native of Bayfielcl 35
years ago but living at present in
„Sapele, Nigeria.
Dear Jack,
I was terribly sorry to learn
the Bayfield news from Allie
IVIcEwen through mother of
your father's death, Jack. As
you know I have been on the
move here, there and everywhere
since 1935 and have met , many
different folk over the years. But
I can honestly say that the
genuine ones were the ones we
knew as kids in Bayfield, ones
like your dad, Herbie, Bill,
Eddie, Louie McLoud and so
many others who have gone on.
As you've likely heard, our
cruel civil war ended here a few
weeks ago and life is a bit more
peaceful but it will be many
years before this lovely part of
Africa 'gets back to normal again.
I go out on leave April 4th
and will be away until about the
middle of August.
Am spending some time in
Spain on the way out and will
then travel on to our home in
South England. My wife and I
will be across in Canada for five
weeks from June 25th, most of
which will be spent at Pete's
place near Hermon. Some time
will be spent in London, Ont.
too so hope to get up to
Bayfield for a day or so. Maybe
we'll be able to sink a beer or
two together, does the Albion or
the Ritz have a parlor?
My 22 year old daughter,
Patty, who is a school teacher,
gets married this summer to a
nice young fellow who has just
graduated as a dental surgeon, it
will be a blow to see our one and
only go, but for her to be happy
is all that matters and she will
be.
Guess that's all Jack, once
again my sympathy in your loss,
Kindest regards to Evelyn and
the family, also to any left, in
Bayfield who may still
remember us.
Sincerely,
Laurie Johns
