claims for damages by persons
who might be injured on their
property. If you rent rather than
own your home, you .might
consider a "Tenant's POlicy,"
which is specially designed t to
protect tenants.
It is a good idea to make a
periodic check of your insurance
policies to determine whether or
not you have proper protection.
Conditions change and what was
adequate coverage a few years
ago may be quite unsatisfactory
now.

Twigs indoors yield flowers
BY A. R. BpcKi..EY
(lust about now, in
-February, many of is feel
t we have had bout all the
ter we can take. Do you look
t at the bare branches of
ubs and trees against the grey
and wonder just how you
poseibly survive until they
clothed with leaves once
re?
If so, why not start looking
und for twigs that can be
ught indoors and foreed into
wth. You will find that most
igs can be encouraged to
ak into leaf and flower if
en the right treatment — and
results are so rewarding. \
There are many things you
uld know before gathering
igs for forcing indoors. Watch
r e day when the temperature
above freezing and then go out
cut the twigs.
Good shrubs and trees to,
art with are crabapple,
herr ies , plums, flowering
uince, forsythias, highbush
ranberry, , shadbush,,
ussy-willows and birch (for the
nder green leaves). These
lints will not suffer if yop
arefully select the twigs you
ut.
Follow the same pattern you
would it 'pruning; then cut the
thick growth so as not to leave a
large gap. Choose branches that
are not too. twiggy, They are
best if at least finger-thick at the
point cut from the tree or shrub.
Branches this large usually have
enough stored foods to support
new growth.
There is some difference of
opinion about the method of
treating these twigs after they
are cut. Most gardeners pound
the ends of the woody stems
almost to a pulp and then stand
them in a bath of warm water to
soak overnight.
More recent research on this
particular subject has shown that
clean-cut ends with no deep
bath or soaking produced the
beet results. Further testing
suggests too that the twigs be
put in a vase of water in a dark
cool room in the basement
overnight. Place the twigs near a
lighted window until the buds
start to break,
At this time bring the vases or
other containers to a warm place
in the living room or to a sunny
window that offers at least two
or three' hours of sunshine a day.
The flower preservatives sold by
florists help to preserve the
forced branches as well as
accelerate the forcing time.
Experience will soon show
you that you must choose
shapely branches for forcing and
find those with 'flower buds,
which are usually plump and
round. The shapely branches
may be in your vases for a long
time before the leaves and buds
add interest, and thus provide
the only beauty you have.
There seems to be no limit to
what you might try, Some
people have success, with
producing silky oak leaves,
chestnut leaves and the very fine
ferny leaves of larch.
Now is a good time to start
preparing for spring planting and
o u tdoor garden operations.
There are many things you can
do that will probably give you a
lift and at the same time ensure
a more thorough' job, since this
is not a busy time,
Take the tools for instance —
make sure they are in gold
repair and ready for action. Get
the lawn mower sharpened ,and
ready to go. If your power
mower is still in the garage, take
it onto the patio and try it out
on a mild, late February day;
then if it doesn't work, you will
have lots of time to get it
checked before the lawn season ,
starts.
Bulbs and, tubers are
problems right now. Batches of
hyacinths, daffodils and tulips
that have received their initial
cold treatment should be
brought into a slightly warmer
place for a week and then to the •
light and heat of the upstairs ”
windows,
Hyacinths should have paper
cones placed over the young
emerging shoots to elevate the
blooms higher than the leaves; a
one inch hole should be left in
the top of each cone to assist in
this development.
Inspect dahlia tubers that
have been stored in sand or
vermiculite and if they appear
shrivelled at all, sprinkle them
with water and reinsert in the
medium.
If you have gladiolus corms in
the basement, examine them
carefully and discard any that
show signs of rot, By now they
should have all been cleaned and
dusted with Sevin dust to stave
off attacks of thripe when
planted, in spring. If , they have
started into growth Already,
your storage Must be too warm
and you should move them to a
' place where the temperature iP
cooler; it may be possible to
screen off an area in your
basement where the window can
be left open for short periods to
decrease the temperature.
A warning to those who have
been influenced by the
flamboyant seed catalogues and ,
are itching to get seeds sown
immediately. Refrain until at
least the end of March before
sowing seeds inside, even though,
you may have lights or
greenhouse facilities.
The only seeds you should
sow right now are pansies,
annual phlox, coleus, begonias,
lobelia and dusty millers, for
these are very slow, starting.

How long is it since you
reviewed the insurance coverage
on your house arid contents? If
you just automatically renew the
same policy year after year,
chances are your coverage isn't
adequate.
Property values - have
increased so much during the
past few years that a policy
taken out on your house ten
years ago wouldn't begin to
cover its present value. How
about the contents of your
house? Are they adequately
covered by insurance? How'
many extras have been added to
the contents since you took out
your current policy — new
equipment, new furniture,
additional sports and hobby
items?
Perhaps you should, change
the type of policy. Many people
carry only fire insurance on the
contents when, for a few more
dollars, they could get
protection against other types of
loss or add a liability clause that
would protect them against

ronto.
All second floor rooms have win-
dows on the gable ends. The storage
space on this floor could be easily
converted into a second bathroom.
The living room, which overlooks the
back garden, should face in a souther-
ly direction. The basement has space
for a large playroom in addition to the
laundry and furnace rooms, The roof
overhang, protects the front and gar-
den doors from the weather. This
house is admirably suited to the needs
of the small family,
The floor area is 1,383 square feet;
the overall exterior dimensions are 31
feet by 27 feet six inches. Working
drawings of this house, known as De-
sign 316, are available at minimum

Only attempt this if you have a
fluorescent, light set-up or a
greenhouse for growing plants,
Most annuals germinate
quickly and before You' knueV it
every available window in the
house will be taken pp with
flats, baking tins and bread pans
filled with growing vegetation.
If you haven't tried growing
plants under fluorescent lights,
now is a good time to get
started, By the time you have
obtained the lights and made the
staging, the slower starting seeds
will need sowing. There are
many second-hand light fixtures
complete with cool daylight
tubes that are excellent for this
purpose and can be bought quite
reasonably, You can, of course,
buy ready-made fixtures and
staging from many local stores
and seedsmen.

This young couple in the parade were later to be judged
runners-up in the public school King and Queen contest. They
are Margaret Roeseboom and Donald Vandehaar of Calvin
Christian school.
We don't, like to second guest the judges, but the News-Record
thinks this entry in the parade should have won a prize. We
could be a little biased since it was our own Jean Steep.
