Listowel taking a 6-0 lead, scoring 5 of their goals from 13:49 to 18:02. Clinton finally got on the scoreboard in the second period when Randy Blake made a pass to Mark Jenkins who set Bill Crawford up in the clear and Crawford fired it past Listowel goalie Larry Ament at '1:35. Clinton scored their final goal of the game in the third period when Mark Jenkins passed the puck from the face-off to defenceman Dave Fawcett who shot and beat Ament at 7:05. Clinton received 13 of 32 penalties assessed by referee Lou Heinbuck in a rough game before a large home town crowd. The second game of the series will be played in Clinton on Friday night at 8:30 and if ,a third game is necessary it will also be played in Clinton.' Pee Wees lose first game A goal by Steve Cook early in the third period was the only goal Clinton Pee Wees needed as they defeated Seaforth 1-0 in an exhibition match last week in Seaforth. The teams played through scoreless first and second periods before Cook scored his unassisted marker at 2:10 of the third. The game was fairly free of penalties with Clinton picking up two and Seaforth one. Gun clubs holds match Clinton Pistol and Revolver Club held a shooting match recently with members of the Listowel gun club. The Clinton club came out on top 1373 points to 1344. Members of the team were Elwood Epps, B. MacLaren, J. Marriott, C. Chisohn, B. Thompson, C. Scholtz, H. Grillmayer, E. Roberts, D. Jefferson and B, Morgan. The snarl of high-powered snowmobile engines echoed across Clinton Community Park Sunday afternoon as 100 machines vied for prize money in the snowmobile races at the second annual Clinton Winter Carnival. More than 3,000 people watched the 14 races. The field of drivers was so large that heats were required in most events, Despite several spills no one was injured although two machines were damaged. A combination of crisp weather which kept the snow in good shape, and hard work by the Kinsmen's Club and others who handled the preparation of the track and the banking of the corners had the track in excellent shape. Top money winner of the day was Ron Moore of -Stratford who took five wins and a second place finish worth $135. A spectacular crash took place in the women's "B" race when Nettie Hopper of Seaforth and Marilyn Reuvel of Strathroy, running one-two going into the second lap, both flipped their machines going into a turn but luckily were not hit by any of the following machines. Skating races for public school were held Saturday morning in the Community Centre as part of the carnival. The final standings saw Clinton Public School on top with 45 points followed by Adastral Park with 27, Hullett Central, 4, St. Joseph's Separate School, Clinton, 3, Calvin Christian, 2 and Holmesville, 1, Individual winners were: Gr. 1-3, Jill Clynick, C.P.; Brenda Ball, C.P.; Pat Bradshaw, d.P. The Ponies lost the hard-hitting game 9-3 in Walkerton Monday night. Walkerton stored six straight goals in the first period before Clinton could break through. Greg Butler finally got a goal at 13:08 of the second to end the famine for Clinton. Robin McAdam and Gerald Cantelon then added two more goals before Walkerton broke through again for three more goals. Star defenceman John Graham suffered a broken collarbone and several other players received jolting body checks from the big Walkerton team. Motomura, Ad.P. and Margaret Siemstram, C.C.S., tied. Colt oldtimers defeat CFB oldtimers In the big match of the carnival, the Clinton Cdlt Oldtimers defeated the oldtimers from CFB Clinton 5-1. • Doug Andrews and Ken Clynick each scored a pair for the winners. Gerow. Girls defeat Stratford in Carnival hockey game Clinton's senior girls' hockey team celebrated the carnival by defeating Stratford 5-2 in the arena on Saturday afternoon. Sandra Graham gave Clinton an early lead before Stratford came back with two goals. From then on it was all Clinton and all Sandra Graham as she pumped in four more goals. Sandra Fremlin aided the cause with three assists and Valerie Garrow added two assists while Joyce Neillans added one, two more BY BERT CLIFFORD Clinton Colts lost two more games this week and brought the decision of whether or not they make the playoffs down to one game with Elora. Colts dropped a 11-8 game to Arthur in Myth, Thursday night. Clinton stayed with the Arthur club for the first two periods. Bud Boyes passed to Paul Draper for Colts first goal after Arthur had struck for two quick goals. Ken Daer came right back, intercepting a pass and going in to beat the goalie and tie the score. Bud Boyes gave Clinton the lead when he pulled the goalie almost to the blueline before shoving the puck in the net. But Arthur came back to tie the score and the period ended 3-3. In the second Arthur again took the lead. Mel flehner and Butch Fleet gave Clinton the lead again with two goals. Lome Daer was fantastic stopping several breakaways and some wicked- point shots. But Arthur broke through again for two more goals before Doug MacCauley put one in front centre ice. The second period ended tied 6-6. Boyes put Colts ahead again early in the third with assists from Don, Bartliff and Carter. Arthur then moved in front in the seesaw match with two goals. Boyes tied the score again and then the bottom fell out for Clinton. Arthur took command with three straight goals, lri Milverton Friday night, The Colts further' hurt their chances of being in the playoffs by dropping a 7,2 loss, Again they fell apart late in the game after they could have WOn it. Lorne Daer was struck in the face with a puck with only three minutes left and vvas forced to leave the game, EDWARD J. WELSH Edward J, Welsh of Huronview died in Clinton Public Hospital February 13. He was 82 years of age. He was born in Clinton on March 26, 1887, and lived in Clinton, Hullett Township and Goderich Township before marriage, attending schools in those areas. He was married to Zelma Holland who predeceased him and he remarried to Olive Welsh. He spent all his life in the Clinton area as a farmer and as a mail carrier for 42 years. He was a member of Ontario Street United Church. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Donna) Tyndall, Clinton and Mrs. Edgar (Helen) Rathwell, Goderich Township; seven grandchildren and one brother, Wilber, Clinton. Funeral services took place Sunday, February 15, from the Beattie Funeral Home with the Rev. H. W. Wonfor officiating. Burial took place in Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Fred Bruinsma, Bernard Sturgeon, Steven and Mark Rathwell, Cordon Tyndall and John Slavin. Flowerbeaters were Robert Welsh and Gerald Walls. MRS. JOHN LEITH - Mrs. John H. Leith, Listowel, died January 31' at her home, 155 Wellington Ave. S., Listowel. She was 52. 'Formerly Saari Livermore, she was born iii Dundalk Atigast 9, 1887, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. JoSeph Livermore, She was a member of Calvary United Church, LiStowel, Surviving are her husband, whom she married Oct. 4, 1905 at Clinton; two sins, George Leith, Listowel, and John Blyth Leith, general manager of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association, Toronto, one daughter, Miss Alice May Leith, of Hamilton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The body was at McLaughlin and Reed funeral home, Listowel, where the funeral service took place February 3 at 2 p.m. Burial was in Union Cemetery, 13lyth. JAMES E. JOHNSTON James E. Johnston, 72, of RR 4, Clinton, died in Clinton Public Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1970. He was born at Fargo, North Dakota, on April 10, 1897, the son of Edward Johnston and Ellen McClinchey. He attended schools in North Dakota. He moved to Ontario with his parents and brothers and sisters, and settled in Hullett Township near Clinton where he farmed for many years. He was married in Goderich Township to Irene Ruby Miller in June, 1924. They farmed in Hullett Township until 1946. They sold their farm and EUCHRE PARTY in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
