victories Over Forest, Strathroy
Give Mohawks First Win Streak
Mohawks are back on the war
path !
The tribe scalped Strathroy
Rockets and Forest Lakesides this j
past week to become the hottest i
team in the loop. If Mohawks
continue the pace, they’ll be near
the top of the standing by the
New Year.
This week’s two important wins
over “A” rivals weren’t surpris-,
ing to the Mohawk faithful. They .
. spot among the tribe’s scorers | and the red-headed star deserved
I the point. He played a big game
both ways for the double-blues.
The kid line, led by “Boom
Boom” Gravett, showed its best
form of the year. The youngsters
scored only one goal on the night
but they were robbed on countless
tries. Gravett scored the opener
on a break-away with Restelli in
the first period when the trio was
particularly effective. Trendell
material to whip any team in the
league; it just was slow to jell
as a winning unit. Now that the
locals are hitting their stride,
the team’s boosters predict a vic
torious future.
Mohawks will try to extend
their winning streak against Mit
chell Thursday night in the local
arena. Next Tuesday night, the
tribe travels to Milverton for an
important game with the Royals.
all-important 6-2 win which snap
ped the tribe’s losing streak.
After a slow first period, An
derson scored the first and third
goals of the second stanza as Mo
hawks took a 3-1 lead. He added
another in the third when the
locals stretched their margin.
Harry McEwen scored his
fourth goal and fourth assist of
the season and Don Gravett count
ed his third marker, Barry Doak,
Mohawks’ reliable defenceman,
scored his first tally of the year.
Red Loader earned two assists,
while single points went to 'Doug
Forest's Dafoe
Leads Goalies
In the race for Gerry Smith’s
goaltending trophy, the four "A”
netminders are just a fraction of
a point apart.
Bryce Dafoe leads his rivals
with a 4.09 goal average per
game. Gai- Baker, of Exeter, who
is in last place, is only .28 of a
goal behind him.
GOALTENDERS’ RECORD
Doug Smith, playing his second
game of the season following his
recovery from a leg injury, post
ed his first goal by sinking a re
bound. Bruce Glen and Bill Mus
ser received assists on the play
as the three fought for the goal
around the Rockets’ net.
Gravett’s goal gave Mohawks a
1-0 lead in the first period which
definitely belonged to the tribe.
In the second, however, the locals
relaxed and were lucky to come
out with a 2-2 tie. Ted Bogal
scored Rockets’ first goal by de
flecting Dave Fulton’s blueline
shot at 6.10 but Smith put the
locals back in front at 10:00 with
his counter. Don Beattie fired
Strathroy’s second goal at 16:06
while Mohawks were shorthanded.
Both Baker and Jessiman were
outstanding in the game. Jessi
man made some miraculous saves
on Mohawk breakaways while
Baker excelled at stopping re
bound shots when his defence was
slow in clearing.
Goderich Best
Among 'A' Clubs
Goderich Sailors,, Exeter Mo
hawks and Walkerton Capitols
chalked up the best records of
the week with two wins each.
The Sailors defeated Milverton
and Forest to move into third
place and top the "A” clubs.
Strathroy Rockets and Forest
Lakesides both dropped two con
tests during the week to drop in
the standings. Forest defeated
Strathroy to salvage one win
ing the week.

With Late Goal
Harry McEwen and Red Loader
combined to score the tie-breaking
counter late in the third period
of Mohawks’ 3-2 win over Strath
roy Tuesday night.
McEwen slapped home Loader's
pass from behind' the net to bust
up the netminding duel between
the Rockets’ I-Iarvey Jessiman and
Gar Baker. The winning goal
came just two and one-half min
utes before the final bell.
