The tribe scalped Strathroy Rockets and Forest Lakesides this j past week to become the hottest i team in the loop. If Mohawks continue the pace, they’ll be near the top of the standing by the New Year. This week’s two important wins over “A” rivals weren’t surpris-, ing to the Mohawk faithful. They . . spot among the tribe’s scorers | and the red-headed star deserved I the point. He played a big game both ways for the double-blues. The kid line, led by “Boom Boom” Gravett, showed its best form of the year. The youngsters scored only one goal on the night but they were robbed on countless tries. Gravett scored the opener on a break-away with Restelli in the first period when the trio was particularly effective. Trendell material to whip any team in the league; it just was slow to jell as a winning unit. Now that the locals are hitting their stride, the team’s boosters predict a vic­ torious future. Mohawks will try to extend their winning streak against Mit­ chell Thursday night in the local arena. Next Tuesday night, the tribe travels to Milverton for an important game with the Royals. all-important 6-2 win which snap­ ped the tribe’s losing streak. After a slow first period, An­ derson scored the first and third goals of the second stanza as Mo­ hawks took a 3-1 lead. He added another in the third when the locals stretched their margin. Harry McEwen scored his fourth goal and fourth assist of the season and Don Gravett count­ ed his third marker, Barry Doak, Mohawks’ reliable defenceman, scored his first tally of the year. Red Loader earned two assists, while single points went to 'Doug Forest's Dafoe Leads Goalies In the race for Gerry Smith’s goaltending trophy, the four "A” netminders are just a fraction of a point apart. Bryce Dafoe leads his rivals with a 4.09 goal average per game. Gai- Baker, of Exeter, who is in last place, is only .28 of a goal behind him. GOALTENDERS’ RECORD Doug Smith, playing his second game of the season following his recovery from a leg injury, post­ ed his first goal by sinking a re­ bound. Bruce Glen and Bill Mus­ ser received assists on the play as the three fought for the goal around the Rockets’ net. Gravett’s goal gave Mohawks a 1-0 lead in the first period which definitely belonged to the tribe. In the second, however, the locals relaxed and were lucky to come out with a 2-2 tie. Ted Bogal scored Rockets’ first goal by de­ flecting Dave Fulton’s blueline shot at 6.10 but Smith put the locals back in front at 10:00 with his counter. Don Beattie fired Strathroy’s second goal at 16:06 while Mohawks were shorthanded. Both Baker and Jessiman were outstanding in the game. Jessi­ man made some miraculous saves on Mohawk breakaways while Baker excelled at stopping re­ bound shots when his defence was slow in clearing. Goderich Best Among 'A' Clubs Goderich Sailors,, Exeter Mo­ hawks and Walkerton Capitols chalked up the best records of the week with two wins each. The Sailors defeated Milverton and Forest to move into third place and top the "A” clubs. Strathroy Rockets and Forest Lakesides both dropped two con­ tests during the week to drop in the standings. Forest defeated Strathroy to salvage one win ing the week. standing Nip Strathroy With Late Goal Harry McEwen and Red Loader combined to score the tie-breaking counter late in the third period of Mohawks’ 3-2 win over Strath­ roy Tuesday night. McEwen slapped home Loader's pass from behind' the net to bust up the netminding duel between the Rockets’ I-Iarvey Jessiman and Gar Baker.
