Mohawks Back At Full Strength To Meet Walkerton Caps Friday Only One Week Left MEMBER PHOTOGRAPHER'On qv' Small Tribe Holds Forest A depleted Mohawk tribe, cut to half strength by a confusing round of misfortunes, held the powerful Forest Lakesides to a 6-3 victory Monday night. The 10 men who were left to carry the double-blue colors into the contest fought with a ven geance to stop the Forest attack but the sheer weight of numbers was too much for the small band. Despite the disadvantage of manpower, Mohawks outscored Lakesides in the second period and tied them in the third. The first period spelled defeat when the Forest crew took a 4-0 lead. Missing from the lineup were Harry McEwan and Clyve Wilber force of the first line; John Tren dell, centre of the second- trio; Frank Anderson and Doug Beatty from the third combination; Pete Ellis and .Clayt Needham on the defence; and netminder ker. For this half of the team make the game. Effective .Defence Led by Colle Bowman Loader, the remaining, half skat ed its tubes off in an effort to tame the Lakesides. Effective de fensive work and plenty, of back- checking gave the Mohawks a moral victory at least. Bill Hick scored twice, Art Norland and Harry Mosienko once during the first period to set up an impressive lead. The story changed in the second, however, when the Mohawks began check- g the homesters into their own Exeter Mohawks will be back at full strength Friday night, gunning for their first win of the season against Walkerton Capi tals in the local arena. Although some doubt remains whether the air force members will be able to play, Mohawk of ficials said Wednesday that if they couldn’t, replacements would be found. In any case, Harry McEwen, Frank Anderson, John Trendell a variety of Gar 13 a- reasons couldn't and Red A two-man attack by Bowman a n d “Boom - Boom” Gravett clicked early in the second for Exeter’s first score. Bowman car ried the puck into the Forest zone .then shot it across the ice to Gravett. “Boom-Boom” flipped it back over the goal crease and Bowman was there to tip it home. Loader Gets Goal Forest got the 10.50 in the period circled the net to second of the night. Red Loader gave Mohawks the edge in the period with a quick face-off goal at 15.05. Bowman drew the puck from the face-off and slapped it in front of the goal for Loader. Stan Ulrich made it 6-2 early in the third when he knocked in a loose puck in front of the net. Willie Waghorn, who was rushed into uniform at the last minute, scored Exeter’s third marker with a blazing blueline shot which de flected in stick. Because of unfor tunate coincidences, lars missed the Forest Monday night when the 6-3. Mohawk strength was during the week by the Barry I)oak, on Monday, and of Bruce Glen, Friday. Both men are working on defence. Walkerton, which has been ic ing top teams in the W.O.A.A. for years, is considered tough oppo sition again this year. The Capi tals whipped Milverton Domin ions 5-1 Tuesday night. On Tuesday night New Ham burg will be .guests at the local emporium. This is another top northern team which local fans will be anxious to see. Blow to the Mohawks fell Mon day when players from Centralia said they were not allowed to play hockey with Mohawks. They were called into conference by station officers Monday morning and were discouraged from play ing. Officials do not know whether this is final but they are investi gating methods to replace the air force players if it is. Affected are Clay Needham and Peter Ellis, defencemen; Doug Beatty, Clyve Wilberforce and Fern Rousseau, forwards. Champs Drop Two Games Two Goderich losses were the surprises of the opening week of the Intermediate “A” W.O.A.A. group. Forest Lakesides whipped the defending champions 6-0 Satur day night and Don Emms’ strong Stratliroy Rockets posted a 6-4 win over Emms’ former mates on Tuesday night. Forest’s 6-3 win over Exeter Monday night put them on top of the league with two victories. Stratliroy has a win and a tie; Exeter a tie and one loss; and Goderich two losses. In other games of the inter locking schedule, these scores were posted: Walkerton 5, Mil verton 1; Orangeville 8, Listowel 1. Meeting in Exeter Friday night, officials of the grouping decided on playoffs. The four “A” teams will place in the standing accord ing to their wins in the inter locking schedule. At the end of the season, the foui’ teams will engage in playoffs with first against third and second against fourth. Winners of these semi finals will meet for the group title. Successor To Buswell’s Another NEW Strathroy's Jessiman Frustrates Mohawks TV Value By Admiral Stratliroy Rockets inflicted that potent disease — Jessiman- itis—on Mohawks Friday night to frustrate the tribe to a 3-3 tie in a spectacular home debut that thrilled 54 0 spectators. Lanky Harvey Jessiman and the Stratliroy defensive strategy foiled the Mohawk attack throughout the game and the 10- minute overtime period although the tribe had a distinct advan tage in shots on goal and terri torial play. Play was exception ally fast and clean throughout the contest. Jessiman saved the visitors in the first period when Mohawks engineered three clean break aways but failed to cash them. John Trendell and Don “Boom- Boom” Gravett were out-manoeu vred by the Stratliroy netminder in outstanding saves.. Addition of strong-skating Frank Anderson to the third line gave Mohawks their scoring punch of the night. Popular Frankie set up Don Fritzley for two goals in less than a minute of the second period to put Ex eter back in the game after Stratliroy had taken an early 2-0 lead. Scores Slider Harry McEwan pushed a slow slider between the Jessiman skates early in the third period to establish a 3-2 Mohawk lead but Don Beattie of the Rockets jarred the twine with a high shot to the corner at 8.04 to deadlock the score. Neither team' found the mark in the next 22 minutes of play. Gar Baker, former Seaforth Junior “B” goaltender who played in Scotland last year, made his debut in the Mohawk nets im pressive with a number of fine saves. He was beaten for the first goal at 8.50 of the second when Allan Pinconibe’s blueline shot hit a skate and deflected in the undefended sidd of the net. The second iStrathroy marker came at 16.07 of the same period when Norm Emmons scored from Don Mayes in a pile-up in front of the net. Wouldn’t Surrender Mohawks worked hard for the winning goal in the overtime period but Jessiman and mates wouldn’t surrender. Musser, Pet-e Restelli, Doug : ty, Red Loader and Colle man were all stopped in plays. Rockets threatened to protest the goal time bert minder Baker dropped to the ice after a hard shot hit his fore head. Ignoring the whistle, Don Emms slapped the puck into an open net. He claimed the referee should have allowed the game to continue until the play was over. Outstanding on the Stratliroy club were Keith Moffat, the Sar nia junior; Don Beattie, playing coach Don Emms, and chubby Don Mayes. These four threat ened throughout the fast tilt. All three of Exeter’s lines were travelling in high gear for the contest. Harry McEwen centred Red Loader and Doug Beatty (who replaced Wilberforce in a last-minut'e change); the kid line of Trendell, Restelli and Gravett was intact; and Anderson sparked Fritzley and Musser for the third trio. Bruce Glen, playing his first game on defence this year, was impressive. Needham, Ellis and Bowman completed the blueline squad. 1 his Bill Beat- Bo w- close contest over a disallowed near the end of the over period. Referee Archie Hu blew the whistle when Net- t Bonnallie (488) and Iris Page (396).
