We got off to a. good start on Monday morning with a scaven­ ger hunt that had a two-fold purpose. Besides providing a lot of fun for the various teams com­ peting, it turned up plenty of good craft material so necessary to the playground program. Toys, pencils, paper bags, crayons, books and games are a few of the essentials that, may be thrown in a corner of the base­ ment. Let ns put them to good use, Any of these articles would be appreciated. Have your daugh­ ter or son bring them up, Thanks! Swimming Registration For our special events program this Friday (tomorrow) all mo­ thers are asked to register their children between the ages of six and 16 years in the Exeter Kins­ men Learn-To-Swim classes. Reg­ istration cost is 50 cents. > This registration fee entitles the children to seven weeks of instruction with at least two les­ sons per week. For the first two weeks, all swimming will be in the mornings from 9.30 to 12 Monday to Friday. Registration forms will be given to the children to take home and have signed. Classes commence Monday. July 12, at 9.30 a.m. The instructor will be Boh Fletcher and while Bob is instructing one of the supervis­ ors will act as life guard. This is the first Learn-To-Swim class to he held in Exeter. Take ad­ vantage of this opportunity and register early. Minor Sports Minor house league baseball and softball playoffs commence Monday at 2.00 p.m. Coaches are asked to notify their players. We deem it wise to run the playoffs in the afternoons due to the swimming in the morning. On Monday the Nitehawks will meet the Tomahawks and the Braves ta.ckle the Giants. Top team, in each league gets a bve so Mo­ hawks and Leafs will be idle. Next week will be Olympic week with a mock track meet Friday morning and a tabloid sports meet Friday afternoon. A very informative addition to this column starts this week. Each issue one of the supervisors will write a column known as Playground Patter. This week it is written by Don Taylor, assist­ ant Playground Director. No. 2 Hold Picnic ■S.S. No. 2, Tuckersmith, held their annual picnic on the school grounds. A delicious picnic sup­ per was enjoyed by the parents, pupils and teachers. A full line of sports was superivsed by the teacher, Miss Gwen Kennedy. Miss Kennedy, who has com­ pleted her stay at S.S. No. 2, was called forward and Mr. Nelson McClinchey read an address and Miss Marie Sinclair presented Miss Kennedy with a gold vanity case. Miss Kennedy made a fit­ ting reply. Dancing followed in the school house with music by the Hank Norris orchestra. Registration Day, July 2, aproximately 24'0 children en­ rolled for a summer of fun and activity. Since then our enrol­ ment has leaped, to 300. Thus far a program, has been arranged and carried* out for children from three to 16 years of age. If a good representation of all ages is maintained, the supervisors will endeavour to carry on a well-rounded curricu­ lum to suit the needs and de­ sires of all the children. Scavenger Hunt On Monday, a monster scaven­ ger hunt was conducted in the morning. This netted a great deal of useful material for the arts and crafts and the games sec- tlohsi of our park. The children in attendance Were split into teams and each team was given a list of the things they were to collect from neighboring homes. These lists consisted of such ar­ ticles as marbles, rope, pins, felt hats, leather purses and many others. The first team back with most material was declared win­ ner. The official opening was held on Monday afternoon, Rev. N. D, Knox1, pastor of Trivitt Memorial Church, who represented the clergy and the recreational coun­ cil, spoke on religious benefits gained from playing together, Robert Southcott, chairman of the Kinsmen Playground Com­ mittee, and Ralph Genttner, president of the Kinsmen club, also spake.
