Zurich Lumber Kings spoiled Mohawks' home opener Friday night by squeaking a 4-3 win over the tribe in a tense thriller. John Heberer’s eighth-inning triple was the blow that broke a 3-3 tie and gave the young Zur ich crew their third win of the Season. Mohawks were shaky on the field in their first home appear-^ ance and allowed three unearned runs to waste the stellar pitching performance of Bob Russell. The tall righthander, making his first start of the season, held the Kings to six scattered hits while Striking out eight in seven in nings. Zurich Scores First Zurich opened the scoring in the first Inning. Haberer reached first on an infield error and Pete Cundy drove him home with a big double, Mohawks jumped into the lead in the second frame When Darling walked and Loader smashed a triple. Bob, in his first start at pitching/ was practically a one-man team as he struck out 15 batters in a six-inning game and hit safely three for three, one a home run. This does not make Bob a star but he has the hustle and drive so necessary in a ball game. His success to his control is where .so good pitchers natural effort to learn to pitch drops, hooks, curves etc. but that is where so many prospects are making a mistake. That’s a case of horse before the cart—a should master his control then develop speed and only should he work on sliders, curves and drops. Minor House League Girls Mohawks ...... Tomahawks ......... WOAA Activity First game of the midget entries in the WOAA Tuesday night at the park I think all concerned with these two clubs were liappy to have the first game at home. The most important part to the coaches and managers was the opportunity to see what material they have to work with under game conditions. The general opinion of the coaches and man agers is that a lot of good poten tial is there but a lot of drive is necessary. Juveniles took the game 12-2., Next games are scheduled for Monday when Mitchell Midgets meet our midgets here; for Wed nesday when the midgets and juveniles meet again and for Friday when the juveniles go to Auburn. Rec Softball x Rec League Softball has started with both games played being real thrillers. There’s little doubt larger crowds will be turning out. Although Legion have lost their first two games they have a strong in pitching is due and that I believe many potentially go wrong. Anyone interested in trying out for the team may be inter ested to know that all positions are .open and, of course, we need a manager. Don Messner Here Don Messner and His Island ers, the popular square dance show that is touring the country, will play in Exeter Arena Mon day, June 21. The Islanders will put on a complete evening’s entertainment with plenty of square dancing, songs by lovely Marge Osborne, the golden voice of the Mari times, and jovial Charlie Cham berlain, the guitarist who sings those novelty tunes. Clinton Radio edged St. Marys 3-1 and walloped Clinton Colts 18-5 on Air Force Day. Mitchell Legionaires remained on top with two more wins. Big gest surprise of the week was their 19-2 shellaking of Zurich Lumber Kings Tuesday night.
