Win By One Coal Counting a one-goal edge in tlie second period, Lucan Irish defeated Zurich Flyers 4-3 on Tuesday night to take a one game lead in their best-of-seven Cyclone “C” playoffs. The traditional rivals battled to a tie in both the first and third periods but Lucan’s lone counter in the middle stanza provided the winning margin. Len Gaudette netted two of Climax Victory Streak With Win Over Alerts Mohawks climaxed a post Christmas victory drive Saturday night with a 10-5 win over St. Marys Alerts in the final game of the Cyclone scliedue. Fighting their way out December slump in which lost five straight games, the tribe bounced from ninth tion to fifth in the standing seven games. Mohawks started their victory drive after losing two straight games to Strathroy Rockets. They won three staight following this series, then lost two tough ones to Lucan and Goderich, but came back to win all the rest except the tie with Hensall Finks. Highlight of the Mohawks’ outstanding record were their wins over Zurich and Goderich. The tribe upset these two Cyclone teams on home ice. Mohawks made the best of their advantage and held Alerts while they 'had an edge in manpower. In the scrambly second stanza, the teams split four .goals. Gerry Hill and John Anderson fired both Mohawk counters and “Boo” Wraith netted St. Marys’' two in less than a minute. Both sides produced play in the third. Joe White tallied for the visitors after 26 seconds of play but Frank Ander son got it back 17 ticks of the clock later. Al McGillivray scored Mohawks tenth goal midway in the stanza. Hard-working Don Fletcher ancl big Bill Hodgins potted two for St. Marys before it was all over. Mohawks’ top scorer, Frankie Anderson, picked up five points on the night. Defenceman Doug Smith notched a goal and three assists, while John Anderson add ed two counters and a helper. Bill Musser, who dressed for the first time in three games, worked hard to pick up two as sists before he had to leave the ice because of his knee injury. Don Fletcher’s fanatic play for St. Marys brought him a goal and one assist. Wraith, top Alerts' point-getter, got two. Al McGillivray handled the tribe in the absence of Coach Colle Bowman. Junior Barash paced the Fly ers to the win with five_goals. Don Hesse and Roger both scored twice with Bob Hay- ter, Pete Cundy, Benny Gignac and Doug O’Brien getting singles. , Ralph Herman potted two for for St. Marys Alerts.
