Mohawks will be, favorites to take the series, having defeated Seaforth both times the two teams met during the regular season. Exeter edged Bill Smith’s crew 9-8 on the local square in their first clash and took them 6-3 in Seaforth. The underdogs, however, may come up with some surprises be fore the series is over. They’re league veterans now and an enthusiastic bunch of young players who won’t be giving up too easily, The locals ended the season in third place. Actually they were just one point behind the league leaders, Mitchell and Strathroy. Good Pitching Statistics on the Mohawks’ play during the season show pitching as their strongest department. They have four good hurlers on the staff, all righthanders. Steve Mitro has been the star on the mound, firing six wins against one loss. Three of his victories were shutouts, two against St. Marys and one against Zurich. His only loss was to Mit chell. Steve’s older brother, Joe, who was expected to head the mound crew, showed a mediocre 2-2 re cord. Howqver, he was hampered by an injured finger on his hurl ing hand and was out of the box for almost half the season, His relief pitching in the last part of the season was exceptional and he looks to be in top shape for the playoffs. Jack Fuller, from Crediton, has a 1-0 showing for the season. He won against Mitchell. His only other start was against Dashwood but he only lasted two and one- third innings. Exeter’s Bob Russell started one game this year, against the lowly Clinton Radio squad. He lost the game 4-3 but it was mostly errors that prevented his win, since he allowed only four hits. Darling Leads Fred Darling tops the Mohawk hitters again this year with a .345 mark. He also leads the team in doubles. Only three of the regulars bat ted over the .200 mark during the season. They are Bob Meharg, infielder Bob Wade and outfield er Harry Holtzman, Harry Holtzman and Joe Mitro are tied for the runs-batted-in crown with 11 each. Bob Meharg tops the locals in triples with three. Holtzman, Wade, Elson and Darling each hit one home run during the season. Zurich Upsets Dashwood 3-2 Zurich Dashwood Tigers 3-2 in the game of their best-of-seven playoffs Tuesday night. Jack Haberer scored the ning run for the visitors in the sixth inning after hitting a dou ble. The game featured a mound duel between Zurich’s Ron Heller and Dashwood’s Robbie Wein. Both pitchers allowed only four hits in the seven-inning game. Darkness and rain stopped play during the first half of the eighth. The Lumber Kings took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when “Sliver” Bedard singled, was sac rificed to second and came home on an error. The Tigers tied the count in the last of the third— Raymie Wein’s single drove Jack Gaiser around. Benny Gignac made it 2-1 for Zurich in the fifth when he Lumber Kings upset first “D” win- toured the bases after hitting a safety. Jack Gaiser scored his second tying run in the last of the same inning. He singled and came home on two walks and an error. Jack Haberer’s winning clout came after one was out in the sixth. He scored on an error. Feelings ran high among the fans and players. At one time a half dozen Lumber Kings stormed onto the field to protest an um pire’s decision. After the game, Zurich cars drove up and down the Dashwood village blowing their horns in celebration. Dashwood is favored to win the series, having beaten the Lumber Kings twice during the regular season. Second game of the playoffs will be in Zurich Friday night. The teams agreed to use Senior Intercounty umpires for the con test. Argyel Gratton Could Be Fastest Canadian Pacer? (Thur,) (Tues.) (Thur.) (Mon.) (Parkhill Gazette) To those race horse fans who thought Argyel Grattan’s nomina tion last year as “the horse of •the year” was a fluke, Argyel had a ready answer for them this year. Victor in 18 out of 19 races this year, and most of these easy straight heat winners, Argyel’s only defeat came because of an accident. But 'his chief ness was shown cliffe track in the best of the meet. Argyel was having easy so the track dreamed up a handicap start. In a class of five he had to take the outside position. When one horse was “scratched,” Argyel still had to start from this posi tion and went on to set the track recordTof 2:03.2, which will take a lot of beating on any half-mile track. To prove further that most horses are no match for him the track officials refused to allow bets to be placed on Argyel in his next race at Toronto, and already he is a prohibitive favor ite to bet on at any track. To our mind Argyel’s and his owner, Dune Campbell’s, of Ailsa Craig, greatness comes from the fact that from the towns. If entry you be there, and thus they are the best known horse and driver in these parts. The following write-up is taken from a Toronto Star’s sports writer interview with "Dune” while he was at Thorncliffe, and rumor now has it that $3'0,000 has been offered for this igelding. “There’s a charm about harness horses that can’t be tured by the rich runners. “For instance, after Dune Campbell’s amazing Argyel Grat tan set a new track record at Thorncliffe raceway Wednesday ■of last week, pacing the mile in 2:03.2, the lean,, leathery, 53- year-old owner was asked if his remarkable five-year-old would be sent in search of richer purses at such floodlit tracks as Roosevelt raceway or Batavia Downs or Buffalo raceway. I dunno about veteran Dune. “I look After, you claim to at the Toronto harness greet- Thorn- where horses it too officials he never “scratches” races in the small they are listed as an may be sure they will fast the cap- “Well now, that,” said the got a farm to know.” “Racing, you sideline for the Canadian harness horsemen. The Legionaires lost the trophy to Dashwood last year after win ning it in 19 50 and '51. Strathroy and Mitchell ended their regular season tied for top spot with 22 points each. Mit chell won 11 games, lost five. Strathroy captured 10 contests, dropped four and tied two. The two playoff games were staged on Civic Holiday. Exeter placed third in the final standing, one point behind the leaders. Dashwood Tigers, last year’s champions, were fourth with 20 points.
