Legion Tie
For Second
Exeter Legion moved into
second-place tie with
this week as a result of two
games played in the Rec Softball
League.
Maroons edged Crediton 8-7
on Tuesday night and the vets
, .squashed Statton's 13-7 Thurs-
‘ day.
The front-running colored
shirts almost blew their win
again in the last inning when
Crediton staged a three-run rally.
Maroons were leading 8-4 at the
beginning of the seventh when
George Shaw issued two walks
and then allowed two consecutive
hits. With the tying run on third
base, Shaw retired the side with
a strikeout.
. Crediton opened the game with
three runs but Maroons tied the
score in the last of the first. The
winners added three in the third
and two in the fifth with a
gle reply from Crediton in
third.
Murray Brintnell, who hit
only homer of the game,
Brintnell and Glen Schroeder
starred at the plate for the win
ners with a .500 night. Bern Mc
Lean, who started on the mound
for Crediton, hit two doubles and
a single while Ross Haugh and
Des Wood batted .500.
Strong Finish
Legion scored 13 runs in their
last three innings Thursday night
to take Statton’s. The tailenders
had a 6-0 lend going into the
fourth before errors spelled their
downfall.
Statton’s score two
first, added a single
ond and three in the
their hurler, Lloyd
held the vets scoreless,
In the fourth, however, a walk,
two singles and an error gave
Legion a three-run inning. Four
errors, a free base and a safety
in the fifth brought in four more
and six runs scored in the sixth
on two extra-base clouts and
miscues.
George Glendinning led
winners at the plate with
for three while Henry Dyke
a homer.
Foi- Statton's, Doug Smith’s
home run and Gary Middleton’s
triple and double sparked the
losers.

Locals Win One Point
In Bout With Dodgers
Exeter Legion Mohawks were
almost eliminated from conten
tion for the Huron-Perth title
this week when Strathroy Dodg
ers took three of a precious four
points in a two-gaine, home-and-
hoine battle.
The Dodgers edged the locals
5-3 in the first game under the
lights at Strathroy Thursday. On
Monday, they sneaked in a ninth
inning run to gain a 3-3 tie. The
two teams are now deadlocked
for third place in the standing.
Both games were heartbreakers
for the locals who played some
of their best ball of the season.
Joe arid Steve Mitro pitched well
but bad breaks in the field and
at bat plagued the Mohawks,
Take Early Lead
On Monday night, the locals
knocked Bill Graham out of the
mound in the first inning when
they teed off with three runs. Bob
Wade opened the spree when he
reached first on an error. Lome
Haugh walked and Fred Dar
ling’s single 'brought in both
players. Bob Meharg hit safely
to score Darling.
Steve Mitro held the visitors
scoreless until the fourth when
successive singles ’ by Bud Em
mons and George Evans scored a
run. A walk to Ted Garvin in
the sixth set up Strathroy’s sec
ond run. Dune Barnes hit a sin
gle to drive Garvin to third and
he scored when Emmons hit a
long fly ball to right field.
In tli»e ninth inning, two errors
turned what looked like an Ex
eter win into a tie. Tish Emmons
singled and came around on
miscues.
Sparkling Play 1
The largest ball crowd of
season saw some nice defensive
play during the game.
Fred Darling,
left field acres
after a week’s
down five balls,
lar fashion.
Tish Emmons,
fielder, sparked in the ninth with
a hard-running stab of Bob Me-
harg’s long
probably
from losing
Meharg, the
inning, would have reached scor
ing position at third base.
Ted Garvin made a picture in
field play in the eighth when he
made a brilliant over-the-body
stab of a hot grounder and fired
backwards to second in what
might easily have been a double
play,
Fred Darling, for Exeter and
George Evans, for the
starred offensively
gles each.

Midgets Win,
Bantams Lose
Exeter Midgets handed Lis-
towel Juveniles their first de
feat of the season Friday night
by winning 7-4,
Winning pitcher, Don Wells,
hurled excellent ball to spark the
upset victory.
The locals scored three runs in
the first and four in the second
to make up their total.
Friday night the midgets lost
to St. Marys juveniles 8-5. Chuck
Parsons pitched for the locals
and hit a double for the locals.
Exeter midgets, under the
direction of Derry Boyle, have a
bye into the playdowns. During
the regular season they are
playing in a juvenile league.
They have a 1-3 won-lost record.
Bantams Lose
Exeter Bantams lost to Clin
ton 5-1 Monday sight. They have
won three and lost three.
Bill Rowe went the route for
the locals and, after allowing
three runs in the first inning,
went well.
Jim Crocker and Pollen hit the
only two safeties allowed by
Clinton hurler, Ron Hugill.
Don't Make Any Bets
The title race in the Huron-
Perth baseball league is tighter tlian ever. Only three points sep
arate the top five teams in the
standing.
Dashwood Tigers are still lead
ing with a one-point margin over
Mitchell Legionnaires. St. Marys,
Exeter Mohawks and Strathroy
Dodgers are tied for third with
16 points each.
’ St. Marys, continuing their tor
rid winning streak, are now the
biggest threat for the champion
sip. They have the best chance to
win. If they cop all their remain
ing games, they’ll win their first
title.
But anything can happen be
fore the schedule finishes. Judg-
ing by the number of upsets that
have occurred, it’s not a very
safe bet to put your money on
any team.
There are 14 games left to
play. Important among these are
the meeting of Mitchell and Dash
wood Friday night in Dashwood.
This could decide the fate of ei
ther team.
Similarly, the Dashwood-Exeter
tussle on the local diamond Mon
day night will be decisive.
Another important game is the
St. Marys-Strathroy meeting in
the Dodger park next Thursday
night.
St. Marys beat Dashwood again
this week to prove their power,
