Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stevens and family have moved from the village. They have taken up resi­ dence in Arva. Mr. Charles Edginton spent the weekend in Toronto. Mrs. E. Collins spent a few days at her home in the village. She has been in Ailsa Craig with her son, Murray, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Carter, Carlyle and Ian spent Sunday with Mrs. Carter’s uncle and aunt, Mr. Adam and Miss Jane Bowman, in Lucknow. W.M.S. And W.A. Meet Mrs. Russell Schroeder enter­ tained the ladies of the United Church on Thursday evening. Mrs. T. Collins presided for the W.M.S. meeting. The pro­ gram from the Missionary Month­ ly was followed tor Dominion Day. Mrs. Robert Williams presided for the W.A. meeting. Mrs. T. Collins was appointed to assist with preparation for the holy communion service on Sunday. A short discussion on ways to make some money for the association followed. The August meeting is to be in the evening in the church basement. At the Sunday morning service at St. James’ Church, the rector, the Rev. J. E. Wagland, present­ ed a certificate to Tommy Tomes, who passed the Senior Uniform examination in the Department of Religious Education of the Church of England in Canada. Mrs. Karl O’Neil is the Sunday School teacher of that class. Due to the basement of St. James’ Church being under re­ pair, the regular meeting of the Brotherhood of Anglican Church­ men will be held in the parish hall at Holy Trinity Church, Lu­ can, on Friday evening, July 10. The guest speaker will be the Rev. L. C. Harrison, of Dor­ chester. May we offer our congratula­ tions to Jacqueline Williams, who passed her exams at Medway High School. She will be in Grade 10. On Friday night he pitched a nine-inning game, de­ feating St. Pauls 4-1, On Mon­ day night, July 6, he strengthen­ ed Lucan’s hold on the top of the Thames Valley League in a seven-inning game against Har­ rington with a score of 6-3. He had 13 strikeouts while Har­ rington’s two pitchers had three each. Bond, Thompson and Hod­ gins each hit doubles Jor Lucan. The next home game will be Thursday night when Granton will be the visiting team. On Monday night, Lucan will play at St. Pauls. Come out and see Lucan's young team play. Mirs, Mary Elizabeth Elson Mrs. Alfred Elson, the former Mary Elizabeth Stevens, beloved wife of Alfred Elson, passed away in parkhill June 29 in her seventy-ninth year. She rested at the M. Box and Son funeral home till Wednesday, July 1, when she was taken to St. James’ Anglican Church, Parkhill, for a service at 2 p.m. Rev. L. H. Crawford • officiated. Interment was in Parkhill cemetery. Besides her husband she iB survived by two sons and two daughters, Ray, of Lucan, Har­ old, of Parkhill, Mrs. Robert Graham (Eva), Edmonton, Mrs. George Gollen (Ethel), Green­ way. Explorers’ Picnic Last Monday night, the Lucan Explorers had a wonderful picnic at the River Flats. Upon arrival it wasn’t long till all were in the water for a swim. This was followed by "eats” ‘to which all did justice. Next came the games which all entered heartily. As the sun went down Counsellors Iva Hodgins and Joan McLean led in a Vesper Service, as the girls sat on the bank of the river. They were assisted by Beverley Butler and Mae Cob­ leigh. After a jolly sing-song the girls were divided into three groups for a nature hunt for leaves and weeds; Evelyn White­ head’s group won in the former and Alice Ryan’s group in the latter. Before leaving for home all girls were asked to be at the church parlors Monday night to finish their home project,, the making of wastepaper baskets. Sunday School Picnic The children of the United Church Sunday School must have a special stand-in with the weatherman, for in spite of pre­ dicted rain for the afternoon of July 1, he came up with an ideal day for the annual-picnic which was held at the River Flats. The sports program started with a peanut scramble for the children under five. Winners in the various races were: Jean Marie Lankin, Gwen Jones, Mar­ garet Cobleigh, Gary Jones, Ro­ bert Damm, Ward Hodgins, Arthur Cobleigh, John Young, Douglas Sigswortli, Don Lankin, Harvey Hayes, Marlene Reving­ ton, Beth Watson, James Dren­ nan. Winners in ladies events were: Mrs. T. A. Watson, Mrs. Murray Hodgins, Mrs. T. S. Hill, Joan McLean, Mrs. John Park, Mrs. Sheridan Revington, Mrs. E. Bridger. Jack Park, Murray Hodgins and Alex Young were also prize winners.' Car Accident Between Elginfield and Lucan on Sunday, a car driven by Maurice Van Besien, of R.R. 3, Lucan, collided with a car driven by Wilbert Mutkins, of London. William Rist, 72, a passenger in the London car, was brought to Lucan for treatment. Damage to the cars was estimat­ ed at $24Q. On Main St., Lucan, Tuesday, June 30, several cars were in­ volved in an accident when a car backed from the curb in front of an oncoming car, causing it to collide with several cars. C.G.I.T. Picnic The Lucan C.G.I.T. held their closing meeting at the River Flats where all enjoyed a swim and a weiner roast. It is most encouraging to know the girls have again earned the C.G.I.T. chevron award for their regular attendance at church and Sunday School, service to the church missionary work and health and handicraft. Murdy. ” Mrs. Gordon McCall, London, entertained last Wednesday with a shower for Miss Carol Dobie, of Lucan, whose marriage will take place early this Fall. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Langford spent the weekend in Toronto, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Butler. Mrs. Brokenshire left by plane last Thursday for Saskatoon, where she will visit her son who she hasn’t seen for 14 years. Her daughter, of London, and her sister, Mrs. Stone, accom­ panied her to Crumlin to see her off. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Coursey, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Murray and Mrs. Edgar McFalls spent Sunday at the Bert Zurbrigg cottage, just north of Grand Bend. Mrs. Stewart Park and Billie are holidaying in Victoria. Personal Items Carol Young, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Young, will long remember Canada’s eighty-sixth birthday, for on that date she was the lucky winner of a bicycle at the annual Kins­ man’s Dominion Day celebration at Exeter. At an induction service for the Rev. Bruce Guy who will 'have charge of Birr and Ilderton United Churches, Rev. H. W. Treffry, Strathroy, was the guest speaker and Rev. E. R. Stanley, of Robinson United Church, London, conducted the service. Mr. Guy comes from Lawrence Station. Since the death of Rev. D. A, Cowan, Rev. W. H. Pike, a retired minister, has had charge of the two churches. Margaret and Fred Culbert, children of Mr. and Mrs. Aljoe Culbert, are holidaying foi* ten days with their grandparents at Boat Lake, near Wiarton. Mr. Garfield Walls, of Pontiac, Mich., is visiting his brother, Mr. Herman Walls. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ford and family, of Detroit, spent the weekend with Mrs. Irene Coursey and family. While here, Robert acted as one of the servers at the communion service at Holy Trinity Church, Sunday morn­ ing. Owing to repairs being made at St. James’ Church, Clande­ boye, the July meeting of the Brotherhood of Anglican Church­ men will be held in the basement of Holy Trinity Church on Fri­ day night, July 10. The guest speaker will be the Rev. L. C. Harrison, of Dorchester. An executive meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Can­ adian Legion No. 540 met at the home of Mrs. A. E. Reilly on Friday night. After completing the business for the year, plans were made for a bigger and better year when their meetings re-open. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Haskett and family, who have been stay­ ing with Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Haskett since coming from Win­ nipeg, have moved into their new home on Alice street, purchased from Mrs. Underwood. Mr. and Mrs. Doug. Lucas, of Arkona, called on Lucan friends last Wednesday, He has sold his home on Main St., N. Mrs. John H.. Wood, whose husband passed away recently, is disposing of her furniture and taking a room with London friends. Two most faithful leaders of the C.G.I.T. were honored by the members last week. Mrs. Charles Corbett, whose other duties compel her to sever her connection with the C.G.I.T., was presented with a crystal plate and Miss Joy Hossie', who is leaving Lucan, was given a flower container. Both will be greatly missed. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Hodgins were Miss Miriam Martin and Mr. Peter Henry from Detroit, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Nugent and family, from London. Miss Jean Coventry, Ingersoll, spent Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Warner McRoberts. Miss' Hattie Hodgins has re­ turned home after spending a few days with Mrs. Fred Simp­ son. Thomas Needham Thomas Garfield Needham, son of the late Thomas and Helen (Farr) Needham, passed away Friday, July 3, in his seventy- second year in London Town­ ship. 1-Ie rested at the Needham Memorial Chapel, London, till Monday, July G, when service was held. Interment was in Arva Anglican Church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Louisa Hodgins (who has many relatives in and around Lucan), one daughter, Ruth, Mrs. Murdie Colbert, and one son, Thomas Ivan Needham, both of London Township; one sister, Miss Allie Needham, and one brother, Gordon, both of London.
