The locals blanked. St. Marys 1-0 in a tight contest Friday jiight but dropped a 6-3 decision to Mitchell Legionnaires in a sloppy tilt Mopday night. The split kept the Mohawks travelling at a .500 clip in the Huron-Perth race. Both Mitchell and Exeter crews' rid themselves of a lot of foul play .Monday night. The game saw a total of 15 errors, with the Mohawks taking nine. Both teams only scored one earned run, and those were both homers over the fence. Boh Wade Mohawk’s circuit third inning and Gatenby slammed naires’ home run, Both were hit with none on. Wade’s homer put Exeter ahead in the third but Mitchell bounced back to score three in the last half of the inning on two hits and three errors. Gatenby put the pill over the fence in the fourth to give the homesters a 4-1 lead. They scored two more in the sixth on two singles and two miscues. Exetei' started its rally in the eighth when Bob Meharg and Harry Holtzman scored on a wild pitch and a fumble. The attack was stopped with two men left on bases. The Mohawks ' could get only five hits off winning pitcher Bill Gatenby. Jack Elson clouted a double and Bob Meharg, Harry Holtzman and Steve Mitro con nected for singles. The locals struck out 15 times. Losing hurler Steve Mitro al lowed only six hits and fanned nine, ) The new Mitchell fence stretches 275 feet along the base lines and 330 in the centre. The crowd liked the idea of the home runs and this indicated other parks in the circuits might follow Mitchell’s example profitably. Pitcher Wins Steve Mitro practically won his own ball game Friday when he hit a triple and scored the only run of the game while blanking St. Marys from the mound. His teainmates, currently fight ing a batting slump, gave him good support in the field, how ever. The infield scored two dou ble plays to help him out of poss ible trouble in the first two in nings. Third-sacker Lorne Haugh stabbed a liner in the first and doubled a runner off second to break up the visitors’ most potent attack. In the next stanza, Mitro started the second himself when he fired a grounder to Wade who relayed to Joe Mitro at first. Bob Wade collected the other two Exeter hits—a double and a single. Don Fletcher, Lee Fox, Lew Bradshaw and A. Noble hit St. Marys’ bingles. Six of the' Mohawk regulars are batting below .200.
