summer may mean the difference

Soil preparation is one of the
most important factors. If at all
possible the soil should have
been cultivated once this spring
to aereate and warm the soil
and make it soak up the moist
ure which arrived the past week.
Care should have been taken to
cultivate where necessary on the
contour, and save much needless
erosion so noticeable while driv
ing the past weekend dowu the
concessions. Corn is a funny
crop, too much cultivation be
fore planting can be as harmful
as not enough.
In this area of mixed farming
too few farmers take advantage
of that cheap source of nitrogen

Organic matter and nitrogen
in that order is the secret, good
corn men claim. Roots have no
trouble making their way
through that loose, crumbly soil
alive with soil bacteria manu
facturing the humus that makes
soil granular, so that it can take
in water and air.
Don’t fonget the phosphates.
All soil in South Huron is low
in phosphorus. If you have not
tested your soil, tests are free
from O.A.C. Guelph. Be on the
safe side anyhow, put on enough.
Oh yes, and potash? If a soil
test shows less than 100 lbs. of
available potash to the acre the
corn is almost certain to lodge.
Borer, wind and other factors
also cause this but experiments
have proven time after time that
lack of potash is a vital factor.
So we suggest that you get a
soil test of your fields. You
might be lucky enough to grow
1D0 busehl of corn but try to
keep it up not this year but
every year. You would not think
of feeding an unbalanced ration
to a hog, why do it to corn.
