Ladies Clean Up Before the sound of the ham mers died down the ladies were at work hanging curtains, scrub bing floors and making the whole place glisten and shine like a Queen’s parlor. The redecoration is almost complete. Just a few finishing touches are necessary to polish off the job. The building will be the centre for all kinds of community activities in the area. It is cap able of holding dances, stage shows, meetings of all kinds, banquets—almost anything that can be held inside. It is now the home of the township council. All the official meetings of the municipality are held in its comfortable quarters. The township previously owned a business block in Crediton where the meetings were held. Stephen township's bright, new community centre at Crediton officially opened next April 7. speakers for the ocea* be Andrew Y. McLean, Thomas Pryde, M.L.A., and Warden Alvin Kerslake, of Hu ron County, among others. After the opening ceremony, la dance will be held in tlie large auditorium. On one side is a large check room and on the other are rest rooms. The building is heated with a modern oil furnace. Community dobs Transforming the ugly old hall into a handsome centre was a job that citizens in the area tackled with a real community spirit. Over $5,009 worth of volunteer labor went i nto the construction. Spearheaded by Deputy-Reeve Wellington Haist and other mem bers of the Community Centre board, hundreds of men, women and children contributed their bit to the new building. “Everybody lias helped with the hall”, board secretary Phil Boulianne, of Crediton, states proudly. " ‘Most everyone has been very generous in giving all the spare time he had.” The work started one year ago when the men moved in to tear out the entire insides of the building. The cumbersome, old stage was removed, the floor ripped up, windows torn and a deeper basement place was in a fog of days. Board Established In April, the present ity Centre Board was established to oversee the construction and balance the revenue and expendi ture columns of the bank books, On the board are Stephen reeve John Morrissey; deputy reeve Wellington Haist; Credi ton village trustee Phil Bouli anne; Albert Gaiser, trustee of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church, Crediton; Lawrence Hill, of the United Church, Crediton, board; Mrs. John Wade, director of Crediton Women's Institute, Personal Items Mr. and Mrs. C. Scatchard were at their summer home in Oakwood during the week. Mr. Scatchard is recovering percept- ably from his illness. Grand Bend friends are glad to wel come him again this year. Mr. Alex Rainville Word has been received of the death of Mr. Alex Rainville at his home in Victoria, B.C. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Leah Geromette and Mrs. Sarah Hamilton and one brother, Nel son, Port Huron. Mr. Alex is the only member of the family who retained the original spelling of the family name. Mrs. Hamilton has told this reporter that the early teachers among them, Mr. Henry Houston, who taught here almost 70 years ago, that these teachers not being familiar with French, spelled their names as they sounded, so Rainville be came Revelle. Mrs. van den Berg and son, Fred, of Forest, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Negryn. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ravelle have been Lt. and new baby Mr. and Betty Love) have a brand new baby too. Mrs. C. It was probably just a coinci dence that that meeting was an orderly, pleasant ope in sharp contrast to the stormy sessions that used to he held in the dark and dirty old hall, ‘but there were some „whp felt that the cheerful surroundings had some thing to do with it. For the first time in more years than a lot of oldtimers could remember, ladies attended a nomination meeting and they appeared right at home with the new chairs, shining floor, and bright drape ries, . The big test of the new hall, at least as far as the women were concerned, was the Fede ration of Agriculture banquet held in January of this year, Over 200 people sat down to a meal prepared and served by the Women’s Institute in the banquet hall. The crowd was so great that it filled the banquet hall and overflowed into the main auditorium. After it was over, the ladies who served the gathering, reported the facilities had stood the test and that even capacity crowds could be handled without difficulty. So, after having passed all the requirements with flying colors, the new community centre proud ly awaits its official christening. MONTGOMERY It is interesting to note that a number of farmers have seen fit to either cut or bulldoze out some of the old apple trees in their orchards in the county this winter. Fruit growers are starting the spray program with the dormant sprays already being applied. The local supplies of registered and certified seed will not begin to meet the demand and much of the seed is coming in from outside areas. With the lowered prices of grass and clover seeds, there is considerable interest in the establishment of long term pastures this spring. u «■ The Story In Shipka By MRS. H.
