Super­ intendent Cowan has sent out a circu­ lar to secretaries of fair associations to that efiect. Provincial detectives a ill keep a watch on the fairs. The Deputy Minister of Public Works, Mr. A. W. Campbell, states that he proposes to advocate strongly the abolition of statute labor, the payment for all roads by a genera tax on the townships and the united maintenance of main roads by the Province, Counties and Townships. Since then the direct elective system has been in force. A bill was introduced by the Govern­ ment to that effect last session, but final considera'ioa was deferred until next session. As some councils might decide tj adopt this year the option provided by the late Government. Hon. Nelson Moutieth has sent out a circular apprising th?m of the inten­ tions of the present Government. He says in part. “It i* the present inten­ tion of the Government to introduce and to pass at the next session of the Legislature a bill providing for the re­ peal of the present County Councils Act, and to provide henceforth Co. Councils shall consist of reeves and certain deputy reeves of townships and the mayor of towns not separated from tho county.” The close season, according to the copy of the Act issued by the Ontario Game Commission for 1905 is as fol­ lows. Dear Nov. 15 to Nov. 1st For moose, rindeer or caribius, south of the main lints C. P. R., is same season as deer, north of 0. P. R. the season runs from Oct. 16 to No/. 15, both days inclusive. No elk or wapiti can be hunted at any time in Outario. Grouse, pheasants, prsirie fowl <>r partridge, woodcock, black or grey squirrels, open ’season, Sept. 15 to Dec. 15th.- Quail or wild turkeys Nov. 1st to Dec. 1st. Swan or geese, Sept. 15th to May 1st Ducks of ali kinds, Sept. 1st to Dec. 15 th. Snipe, rail, plover, Sept. 15 to Dec. 15th. Hares from Oct, 1st to Dec. 31st. Beaver and otter are prohibited un­ til 1910. Muskiat cannot be hunted from May 1st to Jan. 1st and cannot be shot in May. The chief change in the law relates to the season for shooting hares, which has been moved later and opens now on the 1st of October instead of Sept 15th. The hare season a’so closes later on the 31st December. LAURIER Mr. Chas. Stewart aud Miss Jennie McMurchy were in Lome lasb week, seeing Mr. Wm. Finalson, who has been confined for some time. The angel of death called another victim from our midst, in the person of Mrs. Hunter, on Friday of lasb week. Mrs. Hunter had been failing for some time and took to bed two weeks ago and gradually weakened until the end when she passed to the unseen world in the hope of a blessed resurrection. She spent the most of her life in Dorchester, but after her husband’s death a few years ago she moved to Laurier and resided with her sister, Mrs MacRae. The re­ mains were taken to Lucknow to meet the early train and were interred in New Dorchester cemetery. Mrs. Kincheloe has returned to Chicago after spending the summer at her father’s Mr. Donald McLean. Mr. Jim McLennan took in tho London fair lasb week. Mr. K.
