No games of chance must be per
mitted at country fall fairs, or the as
sociations guilty will run the risk of i
losing the Government grant. Super
intendent Cowan has sent out a circu
lar to secretaries of fair associations to
that efiect. Provincial detectives a ill

The Deputy Minister of Public
Works, Mr. A. W. Campbell, states
that he proposes to advocate strongly
the abolition of statute labor, the
payment for all roads by a genera
tax on the townships and the united
maintenance of main roads by the

consist of the reeves of townships and
mayors of towns, bub they will be
smaller in number than they were pre
vious to 1897. Since then the direct
elective system has been in force. A
bill was introduced by the Govern
ment to that effect last session, but
final considera'ioa was deferred until
next session. As some councils might
decide tj adopt this year the option
provided by the late Government.

certain deputy reeves of townships
