What a difference a few days can
make. Combines have been going
steady with the break in the weather
at the end of last week and acres of
corn are fast disappearing from the
fields. There are still soybeans out
and with the good weather on the
weekend, a few more fields were
harvested.
The yard at Cook’s, a division of
Parrish and Heimbecker, is very full
these days. A mountain of corn has
appeared in the middle of the yard.
The good weather had the farmers
working 24/7 and it was a constant
flow of tractor and wagons and
trucks, hauling corn to Walton. I’m
sure all receiving grain elevators are
the same. A reminder to everyone to
drive carefully with all the
machinery on the roads day and
night.

Village sees family membersreturn to help, from vacations
Returning from a week’s holiday
in Puerto Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico
are the Banks family and friends.
Patty Banks was joined by her
children Tanner and wife Loni,
Brandy and Johnny and Cassandra
and Sheldon and Patty’s friend
Gwen from Smithers, British
Columbia. Gwen met the Ontario
group in Mexico.
They had the most perfect,
beautiful weather. They enjoyed the
family time together, swimming in
the ocean and the activities provided
by the beautiful resort.
Walton has changed a bit over the
last week. The house beside the old
rail tracks, on the Smith property,
was moved. Two weeks ago, before
the rain, the first half was moved and
then this week, the second half was
moved. It was a very muddy and
tricky procedure, but it was
accomplished and now it is at its
new home farther north.
Howard and Audrey Hackwell
have had Pam Hackwell home for a
couple of visits and their other
daughter Patricia Andrades has also
been home a couple of times in the
past weeks. They have been helping
out with things since Howard’s
surgery. Howard is home and doing
well.
Judy Emmrich has been in
Toronto all of last week attending
union meetings for the Canadian
Union of Postal Workers. They were
from all across Canada. They
attended meetings every day and
held elections for the many
positions. They only meet every
three to four years so there are many
things to discuss. They had long
days with a little over one hour
breaks for lunch and dinner. She
stayed at the Westin Harbour Castle,
but the food was very expensive.
The convention itself was at the
convention centre across the road
and food was available at a more
reasonable cost. She returned
exhausted from the week’s events
but satisfied with what was
accomplished.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Bremner family on the passing
of Fran Bremner. She will be sadly
missed by her children, Barb,
Bonnie, Doug, Rob, Murray, Barry,
Jerry, June and Shawn. Our
condolences are also extended to her
shadow of 83 years, twin sister,
Nora Stephenson and brother
Charlie Shaw.
Fran was a dedicated supporter of
the village of Brussels and was an
active member in many
organizations. Always up for some
fun and always full of ideas of how
to have a great time. I met Fran
shortly after coming to Brussels and
curled with her, for her, against her
and alongside her for many years in
the Brussels Ladies Curling Club
and enjoyed just a wee drop together
many times. A lovely lady who will
be missed by many. Our sympathies
to the Bremner and Shaw families.
Celebrating the big 50 on the
weekend was Steve Rathwell. A
gathering of nearly 60 family and
friends celebrated in the very full
shed. Steve has such an extensive
array of friends. Deb apologizes for
not being able to invite every friend
he has. I received her apology after
she was telling me about the party.
Happy birthday Steve!
Graham Work celebrated his 90th
birthday last Saturday at the Delta
Armouries Hotel in London with a
large group of friends and family.
Graham was very surprised to arrive
at the hotel to see the celebration.
Graham’s wife Marg travelled to
London with him. A surprise guest
was the couple’s son Ken who made
the trip from Alberta.
All of Graham’s nieces and
nephews were in attendance
travelling from Toronto, Caledonia,
Conestoga and London.
Graham continued his celebration
on Wednesday at a party in Ripley at
his daughter Judy’s home.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Shannon McGavin, John
Steffler, Carol Humphries, Helen
Boven, Brianna Williamson, Liam
Sutcliffe, Brent Alexander,
MacKenzie McGavin, Janine Knight
and David Steffler. November has
started off with Judy Lee, Marvin
Bachert, Peggy Humphries, Stephen
Burke, John Gaunt, Garret Mader,
Johnny Ryan, Bruce Blake and
Alexis Terpstra. Happy birthday to
all.

Listowel theft chase
spills into Huron
On Wednesday, Oct. 26 just
before 5 a.m. Perth County OPP
officers were called to a residence
on Elma Street West in Listowel
where the home owner reported the
theft of his trailer and ATV.
Huron and Perth County OPP
officers patrolled for a vehicle
towing the stolen trailer and All-
Terrain Vehicle (ATV).
Shortly after 5 a.m. officers
observed a pickup truck with the
stolen trailer and ATV attached, in
the area of Road 180 and Perth Line
55 west of Monkton. Officers
followed the vehicle into Huron
County where it headed westbound
on Moncrieff Road. Officers
deployed a spike belt, resulting in
the vehicle losing control and
ending up in a ditch area along
London Road.
Two males ran from the pickup
truck and were arrested. The ditched
pickup truck was found to have been
stolen from a North Huron address.
The two males, currently in
custody, were held for a bail hearing
in Goderich on Oct. 26.
The Perth and Huron OPP Crime
Units with the assistance of the OPP
West Region Identification Unit out
of Mount Forest are actively
investigating this incident.
The OPP is also reminding the
public to be vigilant in securing
their vehicles and residential
properties as criminals are taking
advantage of opportunities afforded
to them by our trusting population.
Persons observing unusual activities
in their neighbourhoods are urged to
immediately contact the police.
The Perth County OPP is
requesting anyone who may have
information about the recent break-
ins and vehicle thefts in Huron and
Perth County to contact them at 1-
888-310-1122.
Should you wish to remain
anonymous, you may call Crime
Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477),
